FIELD EXPERT BIOGRAPHIESLeilani MillerLeilani M. Miller is Associate Professor of Biology and former Clare Booth Luce Assistant Professor of Biology at Santa Clara University. She is also director of the University Honors program, director of the Office of Student Fellowships, and co-director of the Johnson Scholars Program, SCU’s premier merit scholarship and leadership program. She joined the university in 1994 after finishing her post-doctoral work in the Department of Developmental Biology at the Stanford University Medical Center. Prior to that, she earned a Ph.D. in Biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a B.S. in Biology (Honors Program) from Stanford University. She teaches courses in Genetics, Molecular Biology, and Biotech Ethics. Her research focus is in Developmental Biology, specifically, the mechanisms by which cells in the model organism C. elegans assume and execute the different cell fates required for a variety of specialized functions. She has published articles in Cell, Genes and Development, and Genetics and she is passionate about strengthening student learning and interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) by connecting course topics to issues of critical local, national, and global importance.

Andreas Ott

Andreas Ott studied theoretical physics (masters) at the University of Stuttgart in Germany, with minors in chaos theory and analog/digital signal processing. In 1994 he co-founded a consulting company producing the first internet connectivity software kit for the German Research Network DFN.

Since 1997, Mr. Ott has worked in various positions as a network engineer in Silicon Valley, first for the original consumer broadband cable modem network @Home; then for startups NetVMG, MetroFi and PacketDesign. Now at INAP (Internap Corporation), Mr. Ott designs and operates global datacenter networks, providing access to cloud computing, online services, and payment card processing. He specializes in Internet protocols and network security.

ScienceCarissa DimenCarissa works as a Public Health Microbiologist for the Solano County Public Health Lab. Public health microbiologists test for communicable diseases such as tuberculosis and rabies which pose a risk to public safety. Inspired by Doc Rosé's Pestilence and Civilization class in high school, she found public health in the midst of her educational journey resulting in B.S. in Microbiology from SF State and a certification as a Public Health Microbiologist.

Seng H. LooSeng H. Loo is currently the Fab Manager for the Anritsu Microelectronics Fabrication Facility in Morgan Hill, CA. He graduated with Honors. B.S. degree in Biochemistry from the University of Windsor, in Canada and was awarded a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry from Stanford University in California. After further postdoctoral research work at Caltech, and a teaching stint at the University of Malaya (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia), he decided to work in the industrial sector. His first industrial job was with Seagate Technologies, where he was recruited to help set up a Failure Analysis Facility in Penang, Malaysia. After further work experience at Hyundai Electronics and Watkins-Johnsons, he joined Anritsu to manage the Microelectronics Fabrication Facility. With its current position, Dr. Loo manages various programs to fabricate proprietary electronic devices for various internal and external customers, as well as serve as the Business Development Manager for the business unit.

FIELD EXPERT BIOGRAPHIESErnest PrabhakarDr. Ernest Prabhakar has been helping world-class organizations ship groundbreaking products for over twenty years. He is currently Documentation & Tools Engineer at NAUTO, an emerging Artificial Intelligence/ Autonomous Vehicle startup, where he is responsible for defining and improving internal processes. From 2014 to 2016 he consulted and led at six different start-ups, doing product management, launch planning, software development, and executive coaching. Prior to that he was Infrastructure Evangelist for Apple from 2012 to 2014, where he single-handedly designed and built a Ruby on Rails web application for managing the World Wide Developer Conference.

The keystone of his career was helping transform Apple's operating system business during the Steve Jobs era from 1997 to 2012 as the UNIX Product Manager. He drove the first release of Mac OS X Server in 1999, including launching the Darwin Open Source project. He spearheaded adoption of Mac OS X among scientists and engineers, leading to the dominant position of MacBooks among modern software developers. He also developed prototypes and reference implementations in C, Objective-C, Python and Ruby. Before that he spent 1997-99 as a Boston Consulting Group Associate, where he moved their Value Management software from a mainframe onto Visual Basic. He holds a Ph.D. in Particle Physics from Caltech and an S.B. in Physics with Electrical Engineering from MIT. He is a prolific writer, and maintains a stable of blogs and Twitter accounts covering technology, philosophy, and organizational development.

Randy AndrewsJ. Randolph Andrews received his B.S M.E. in 1981, B.S. E.E. in 1981, and B.S. M.E. in 1983 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Andrews spent 4 years at Hewlett Packard’s corporate research laboratory in the Applied Physics Research Center as well as the manufacturing research center, 4 years with Galil Motion Control, and has been employed 27 years with Douloi Automation and concurrently 4 years with Modusystems, Inc..

Mr. Andrews founded Douloi Automation, Inc. in 1991 and co-founded Modusystems in 2014 to provide real-time motion control hardware and software solutions for use with Microsoft Windows. Interests include motion control, software/electrical/mechanical system design tradeoffs, high abstraction programming, real-time programming, visual programming techniques and tools, and coaching high school robotics (Go Knights!).

Donald ApyDonald is an IT Project Manager who leads global software teams implementing new technologies in support of corporate functions such as Finance, HR, and Operations. Donald's projects have been primarily

FIELD EXPERT BIOGRAPHIESyears at Pacific Bell (which is now part of AT&T) as an electrical engineer, and then left to attend law school at UC Berkeley, where he earned a JD (Juris Doctor) degree. Brian first worked as an associate attorney at a law firm for a few years, and then he operated his own solo law practice for many years. In 2011 he joined a tiny start-up company called Nest Labs to establish and run their patent program. The tiny startup grew quickly, launched two successful IoT ("Internet-of-Things") products, and then was acquired by Google in 2014. He is now a patent attorney at Google.

Liz Duncan

Liz is the VP of Technology at Oregon Community Credit Union where she manages sytems and technologies to secure and protect almost $2 Billion in assets. Prior to that she spent 25 years in Bay Area High Tech, including senior roles at Fortune 500 companies including Symantec, Veritas, SBC, and ADP. She also lived and worked in London for 5 years, helping to round out experience as a technology leader in our global connected economy.

She graduated from San Francisco State University with a degree in International Relations and a minor in Finance. She has published white papers with the Corporate Executive Board think tank organization on security metrics. She is a Certified Informations Systems Auditor (CISA), a Project Management Professional (PMP), an ISO Lead Auditor for Software Development and Information Security and a Net Promoter Certified Professional.

FIELD EXPERT BIOGRAPHIESfocused on data warehousing and business analytics. His past companies have included Sun Microsystems and Cisco. He has most recently moved companies to work for Visa. He majored in Computer Science at Brown University, with a second major in Urban Studies.

Jennifer ApyJennifer Apy earned a B.A. in Computer Science and Cognitive Science from Brown University and an MBA from Stanford University. Jennifer's career began with Andersen Consulting (now Accenture) in the IT Consulting Division. She later moved into marketing, but now finds the social media era demands her understanding of computer programming and relational database concepts more than she could have even imagined.

The surprising message Jennifer would like to deliver to students is that a STEM major can lead to MANY careers, and can be a real differential for careers in marketing and business management.

Brian DaiutoBrian Daiuto is an Attorney at Law and a Registered US Patent Attorney. He has been practicing patent law in Silicon Valley for the past 25 years. Upon earning a BSEE (Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering) degree from the University of Akron, he went to graduate school at Stanford University, where he earned an MSEE (Master of Science in Electrical Engineering) degree. He worked for three

FIELD EXPERT BIOGRAPHIESJohn HurleyJohn Hurley is a mathematician and data scientist, and he currently works at a small Utah-based FinTech startup using machine learning to analyze financial risk. His main programming languages in this role are R, Python, Mathematica and Scala, and he also uses C, C++, and Ruby as needed. Previously, he was at Apple for 18 years doing low-level security infrastructure code for iOS and OSX. "He has a Ph.D. in Mathematics from SUNY at Stony Brook, and a Certificate in Quantitative Finance. He has finished a specialization in Machine Learning with the University of Washington, and he is halfway through the 10 course Data Science Specialization given by Johns Hopkins University. He has a son who is a successful motion graphics artist and his daughter, Jinju, is a senior at TKA. His other interests include: learning languages, photography, horseback riding, and snowboarding.

Tailong Ke Tailong Ke is a Building and Information Architect with Rafael Vinoly Architects. He is a passionate painter, and designer with twenty-two years of experience in Architectural Design, Construction Administration, BIM management, IT/MIS service, software development and various types of project management. Ke studied architecture at the University of Arizona - Eller College of Management earning a Masters of Architecture, RA, AIA, and NCARB Certified. He has a love for combining technology with creativity, balancing the art and science, and is passionate about design. He is the

Jason has had the privilege of making significant contributions to every Macintosh since 1999, every iPhone and iPad since 2013, every AppleTV since inception, and every Apple wireless Accessory ever made. He is the leading team member of the Apple AirPods and has been awarded over 10 patents. Prior to working at Apple, Jason owned an independent software company, Chaotic, Inc., a producer of several award-winning programs including Media Rage and Web Devil. Jason graduated from UC Davis in Biological Sciences with a minor in Philosophy and Plant Pathology. Mitalee GujarMitalee is an Engineering Leader at Amazon where she leads Alexa cloud services responsible for experiences related to commute, traffic and transit. Born in India, she moved to the United States to pursue a Masters degree at Stanford University following which she spent several years in the networking and storage industry. Mitalee is the mother of two girls in Grade 1 and pre-K, and is passionate about promoting and advancing women in technology. She has served as a technical mentor for TechWomen (U.S Department of State) and Lila Poonawalla Foundation (India Educational Trust)

Peter Monaco Peter Monaco is a Software Engineer with 25 years of experience in both startups and large companies around Silicon Valley, including Microsoft, Yahoo, and Facebook. Peter has held leadership roles managing as many as 100 people, but also still enjoys writing code and seeks out positions where he can stay technical. Peter currently works in Facebook's Connectivity Lab, helping to develop technologies to extend the internet to the billions of people who don't have access yet. Peter graduated from Los Altos High School, earning his Bachelors degree at Dartmouth College, and his Masters degree at Cambridge University, England.

Greg NivenGregory Niven is the Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Necsel, but also has functioned in engineering, manufacturing, finance, and start-ups. Necsel designs and manufactures high powered visible lasers that are sold all around the world. It has become the worldwide leader in visible laser system solutions with a key market being cinema projection with customers like IMAX, Dolby, and AMC theaters. Sanjeev Kumar

Sanjeev Kumar is a Vice President, and Head of Insurance at Saama Technologies in Campbell, CA. He is responsible for delivering innovative data analytics solutions to the industry. Before joining Saama, Mr. Kumar was the co-founder, COO and board member of InfoSTEP, a position he held at the time of their acquisition by Saama. Prior to InfoSTEP, He has served in senior management BI/BA roles at Silicon Valley mainstay companies Sun Microsystems, SGI, Applied Materials and CMC Ltd.

Meghna LavMeghna Lav is a software engineer at Apple working on wireless technologies with some of the smartest people in the world. She studied engineering in India and then traveled to Pittsburgh, PA for an advanced degree in Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. Aside from her day job, she works as a Mentor in the Apple Women in Science and Engineering Program. Also enjoys board games, hiking, and dancing.

Peter MataPeter Mata is currently studying Game Design Engineering at Cogswell Polytechnical College. At Cogswell Peter has taken classes on game design, programming, and 3D art. Game development studios employ many people with lots of different skill sets from

David Young

David Young is currently a software tester III at Vencore, Inc. With a small group, he is building a proof-of-concept end-to-end deployable software automated UI test using Microsoft's Visual Studio Enterprise, Hyper-V Manager, and Team Foundation Server. Mr. Young has prior experience at Hewlett Packard and Google, and other companies. He earned his undergraduate degree in math and computer science at San Jose State, and he is a TKA parent.

Fred ChengFred Cheng majored in Mechanical Engineering entering college because he liked the mechanics portion of his high school physics class. But, discovering that he “wasn't really cut out for” mechanical engineering in grad school, he switched to Computer Science. Since then, Mr. Cheng has worked at a variety of software companies, from startups to large companies, and now works at LinkedIn where he writes software that helps hundreds of millions of people in their careers. He did his undergraduate studies at UC Berkeley and graduate studies at Stanford University.

FIELD EXPERT BIOGRAPHIESbio-technology. Mr. Niven studied engineering physics and electrical engineering at the University of Alberta. He is a TKA parent, and a member of the school board.

Conner and Tyler SchoenduveConner and Tyler Schoenduve are TKA alumni (class of 2015) studying computer science with an emphasis in security at Santa Clara University. Tyler’s internship experience includes developing a mobile application threat intelligence product and using machine learning and predictive analytics to stop phishing at Proofpoint. This summer he will be focusing on threat research and attribution as an intern at Facebook. Conner has done multiple internships in application security, hacking software and defending against malicious actors. He will be joining Splunk this summer as a product security intern.

Together they are developing King’s Web Application under the advisement of Chris Shols.

Chris SholsChris is a Business Development Advisor for high-tech companies in the Valley and has interests in bio/chemical/mechanical/electrical systems, devices and (silicon) chips. He is involved with sales/development of products, partnerships and people. He is the father of two TKA Alumni, Erika (TKA 2015), a junior at University of Denver, CO; and Rebeka (TKA 2017), a freshman at Baylor University, TX. He also enjoys promoting STEM careers and being a mentor for present and former TKA students.

Ian DimenIan is a staff electronic design engineer at Tesla. Ian has always been fascinated by the way technology works and how things are made, even as a child. Joan Huser Joan Huseris Vice President of Americas Sales at TDK InvenSense, a world-leading provider of MEMS (micro electrical mechanical systems) sensor platforms found in Mobile, Wearable, Smart Home, Industrial, and Automotive products. Geoff Chatterton

Geoff Chatterton is a principal at SurfaceInk, a product development consultancy that has helped to create a broad range of consumer electronics products including GoPro, Oculus, August locks, SiriusXM, Fitbit, Nook, and hundreds more. Prior to SurfaceInk, Geoff worked at Apple, Dell, PayPal and was an early employee or founder of four successful startups. He is an MIT grad, and retired U.S. Navy officer. Geoff earned a B.S in Computer Science & Computer Engineering. He has two current TKA students, Robbie, a senior, and Nathan, freshman. His oldest son Seth (TKA ’15) is currently attending Dartmouth.

Linda ChengMrs. Cheng is a mom to two students at The King's Academy. She is also a Senior Architect and Designer of all the existing Cisco Catalyst series switches and routers. She has developed over a dozen networking ASICs which make up the popular enterprise switches and routers, generating $11 billion in revenue per year. She holds 9 patents, was an author to the Gigabit Ethernet networking standard and holds several awards in her field. After earning a Bachelor of Science in an Electrical Engineering , major at Stanford University, Mrs. Cheng worked on the Pentium processor at Intel and then moved into networking products. Grace Leung-Marshall is the mother of a TKA Junior. She has been an engineer at Cisco Systems for 17 years. Ms. Leung-Marshall’s current position is Technical Leader at the company's Cloud and Visualization Technology Group, where her primary focus is in the design and architect of the network software control and automation. She is currently pursuing a certificate in Data Analytics/Science through online learning Udacity and Coursera. She received a B.S. Computer Science and a Master in Telecommunications at the University of California, San Diego.

The Internet is the infrastructure we rely upon to conduct our daily functions. Data Analytics is a tool we utilize to gain insights and create values for business and consumers. Examples are Amazon and Netflix recommendations. Data Analytics applies to all industries from entertainment to healthcare. She looks forward to sharing her experience in developing software to control and automate the networks and knowledge in the field of Data Science.

Dennis Majchrowicz

Dennis Majchrowiczhas a Bachelor of Science degree in Metallurgical Engineering (the study of metals) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Frank Kmak Frank Kmak is currently the Chief of the Wind Tunnel Division at NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California. He oversees of the research, operations and engineering staff that support transonic and supersonic wind tunnels at the Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel (UPWT). In addition, he is responsible for research and operations of small scale facilities at the Fluid Mechanics Laboratory (FML) at Ames. This involves managing the government and contractor staff that performs engineering design, preparation, conduct, scheduling, test management, maintenance, and facilities projects of diverse tests and projects in unique national facilities.

Frank graduated from UC Davis with a BS in Mechanical Engineering.

Kevin LeongKevin is currently Head of Product Marketing for SAP's big data cloud service. He is a tech industry jack of all trades, having held marketing, sales, product management and engineering positions at SAP, VMware, Google and several start-ups. He studied electrical engineering at Stanford and subsequently attended business school at the University of Chicago. Kevin also assists in finance, welcoming and children's Sunday school at Redeemer Bible Fellowship in Mountain View.

Sam AldrinSam Aldrin works as Network Architect @Google Network Operations. He is involved in architecting and operating of Google DC networks in order to meet the ever growing demands of Network Capacity and Bandwidth.

He is also co-chair of Network Virtualization Overlays Working Group at IETF. Prior to Google, worked as Principal Engineer at Huawei Technologies and Technical Leader at Cisco Systems, developing various networking technologies.

Author of various RFC’s and drafts in the area of Routing Protocols within IETF. Frequent speaker various networking conferences and forums related to SDN, NFV and other networking technologies.

Barry SullivanBarry Sullivan is currently the Technical Integration Manager for the Airspace Operations and Safety Program (AOSP) Office within NASA’s Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate. He is responsible for assuring that the unique cross-project technical integration requirements between the projects within the program are satisfied to enable seamless gate-to-gate technologies and solutions to support the Program. Mr. Sullivan has been with NASA at Ames Research Center for 30 years, and has authored several papers and has received numerous awards including the NASA’s Outstanding Leadership Medal in September 2011. Prior to working at NASA, Mr. Sullivan work as an aerodynamics for the Lockheed-California Company,

Randy OverbeckRandy Overbeck has a Bachelor of Science in Microelectronic Engineering from Rochester Institute of Technology. He has had a 17-year career with a major Silicon Valley technology firm, currently as a Systems Management Engineer. He has worked on products used in homes across the world and by every TKA student in the classroom. His daughter Zoe is in 9th grade at TKA, and his son Zach will be coming to TKA next fall for 6th grade.

Dawn Smithson Dawn Smithson is the District Manager for California Water Service, Bear Gulch District. Dawn has a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from San Jose State University, and a Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A. Sc.) in Environmental Science from Olivet Nazarene University. She has experience and knowledge in the areas of water treatment, water resources, and water quality. Dawn is married to Scott Smithson, AP Biology and AP Environmental Science teacher at The King's Academy and their daughter, Selva, is here in 6th grade.

He enjoys spending time with his wife, Donna and their two children, Tyler (TKA grade 9) and Phoebe (TKA grade 7).

Theresa Benkert Dr. Benkert graduated from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo with a BS in Biological Sciences and started her career in the biotechnology industry researching formulations for recombinant proteins for therapeutic use in humans. Wanting to dive deeper into the science of pharmaceuticals, she returned to school and earned a doctorate in pharmacy from UCSF. Dr Benkert practiced at Stanford and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital before returning to biotechnology where she has held a variety of positions in Medical Affairs with a focus on malignant hematology.

Sahana Baker-MaloneSahana Baker-Malone majored in Psychology at Scripps College in Claremont, California before receiving an MA in Occupational Therapy at the University of Southern California. Sahana has been practicing occupational therapy since 2003 and has been at Development Is CHILD’S PLAY! since 2004. Sahana previously worked in the only hospital on Maui, helping patients in acute and rehabilitation care, hand splinting, and performing modified barium swallow studies. Sahana has advanced certifications in the SIPT, swallowing and feeding, Therapeutic Listening, and the Masgutova Method.

Paul WilcoxPaul Wilcox is a Senior Director of Engineering at Intel Corporation where he leads teams developing semiconductor solutions for PCs and mobile devices. Paul started his career as an electrical engineer designing chips at companies including Sun Microsystems, Cisco Systems and Nvidia as well as several successful startups. Paul has a B.S. of Engineering from Northeastern University and an MBA from San Jose State.

Joseph E. AwenderDr. Joseph E. Awender II is a second generation Chiropractor with over 15 chiropractors in his extended family. Being the youngest student to ever enroll in chiropractic college, Dr. Awender II is proud to carry on the family tradition of excellence in health care. Kristal Franklin The mother of 3 students at TKA, Kristal Franklin has been a pharmacist at Stanford University Hospital and Clinics for 20 years. Her current position is Ambulatory Clinical Pharmacist in the Primary Care clinics and the Anticoagulation Clinic. She works with physicians and other health care professionals to manage disease states such as diabetes and hypertension. She tests blood pressure, blood sugars and blood thickness using special meters, and can give injections or immunizations to patients.

Sahana grew up and homeschooled in rural Maui, Hawaii. When she’s not at Development Is CHILD’S PLAY!, Sahana plays competitive roller derby with the Peninsula Roller Girls and spends time with her husband Joe, their three children snowboarding, traveling and being adventurous.

Brian DuBois

Brian has worked for medical device companies ranging in size from three employees to several thousand employees over the last 24 years. He has been involved in the introduction of over three dozen medical devices and holds over 30 US and international patents for products in a variety of surgical specialties including cardiac bypass surgery, spine and back pain, general surgery, gyne gy, endoscopy, and Ear, Nose, and Throat. He is currently the Vice President of Research & Development for a small medical device company that is developing products to improve the lives of patients suffering from sinus and nasal diseases.Brian earned his undergraduated degree in Manufacturing Engineering (Electrical and Mechanical focus) from Miami University. He also earned a Graduate Certificate in Biodesign from Stanford University.

Sena Felt

Sena Felt received her BA in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a BS in Occupational Therapy from the University of Puget Sound. Tanya ThreewittDr. Threewitt is a Family Medicine doctor with John Muir Medical Group in Walnut Creek, Ca. She has served as Director of Operations for John Muir Medical Group since 2012, and is currently in a leadership Fellowship though UCSF. She and her husband, Chad Saxalid, live in Clayton, Ca.

Tanya is a native of San Jose and attended Mission College before transferring to UC Davis where she earned her B.S. in Psychology. She earned her M.D. at Hahnemann University (now Drexel) in Philadelphia, PA.

Jacob PhilipJacob is the founder and CEO of MedLever and provides overall company and product vision and leadership to the team. Prior to MedLever, Jacob served in software leadership at Elekta and IMPAC Medical Systems, where he held positions in product management, marketing and general management. Jacob has a clinical physics and cancer center management background with 25+ years of overall experience in cancer care.

Dr. Franklin completed a clinical residency at Stanford Hospital. Clement Kim

Clement Kim received his undergraduate degree in Cellular Biology at the University of California, Berkeley. He attended the University of Kansas School of Medicine and completed a residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. He has been practicing primary care medicine for 20 years and is currently with The Permanente Medical Group. He also works with UCSF medical students as voluntary faculty. Clement is married and has two children currently attending The King's Academy.
