How to Replace Your Driver’s License in Colorado

Eligibility Check Driver’s License Replacement
The Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV)
only provides duplicate licenses to drivers who
are younger than 21 years of age. If you are 21
years of age or older, you must follow the steps
to renew your license if it has been lost, stolen
or damaged.
Before you can request a renewal or
replacement for your license, you must choose
the method that you are eligible for.

Online Replace Your Driver’s License
(Any age)
What You Need
Your driver’s license number
Your Social Security Number (SSN)
A valid email address
A printer
A credit card for the $28 renewal or
replacement fee
Steps to Take
1. Visit the MyDMV online system and
provide information to retrieve your
account.
2. Verify your information and choose to
“Renew your driver’s license.”

3. Provide credit card information for the
renewal fee.
4. Print your receipt and temporary credential
to carry as your interim license.
5. Receive your duplicate license by mail
within 30 days.

By Mail Replace Your Driver’s License
(Younger than 21)
If you are younger than 21 years of age, have
held a REAL-ID compliant license and are
currently residing out of state temporarily, you
can request a duplicate license by mail without
renewing.
What You Need
Completed Form DR 2989
Check or money order for the duplicate fee.
o $12 if this is your first duplicate request.
o $16 if this is your second duplicate
request.
Steps to Take
1. Complete the Request for a Duplicate
Driver License, including a signature and
out-of-state address.

2. Send the form and your payment for the
duplicate fee to:
Colorado Department of Revenue
Division of Motor Vehicles
P.O. Box 173345
Denver, CO 80217-3345
3. Receive your duplicate license in the mail within
30 days at the address you provided on the
form.

In Person Replace Your Driver’s License
(Younger than 21)
What You Need
An identification document
Your SSN
Proof of your Colorado residency (dated
within one year), such as a bank statement
or homeowner’s insurance policy
Cash, check or credit card (Visa,
Mastercard, American Express or Discover)
for the duplicate fee.
o $12 if this is your first duplicate request
o $16 if this is your second duplicate
request

Steps to Take
1. Schedule an appointment with a local DMV
office.
2. Provide your identification documents.
3. Provide proof of your SSN or provide it
verbally.
4. Provide payment for the duplicate license
fee.
5. Receive your duplicate license by mail
within 30 days.

Note: If your driver’s license was stolen, you
must file a police report and provide it
to the DMV.

(Older than 21)
If you are 21 years of age or older and
attempting to obtain a duplicate license by mail,
you must renew your license.
What You Need
A completed Driver License Renewal by
Mail for Applicants 64 Years of Age or
Younger Application (DR2746) or Driver
License Renewal by Mail for Applicants 65
Years of Age or Older Application (DR2330)
Documents that prove Citizenship or legal
presence, if applicable
Check or money order for the $28 renewal
fee

Steps to Take
1. Complete the renewal application and
attach supporting documentation, if
needed.
2. Mail the renewal application, supporting
documentation and payment to:
Colorado Department of Revenue
Division of Motor Vehicles
P.O. Box 173345
Denver, CO 80217-3345
3. Receive your renewed license in the mail
within eight weeks.

5. Get a new photo taken, if needed.
6. Provide a fingerprint, if needed.
7. Provide payment for the $28 renewal fee.
8. Receive your renewed license by mail
