The step was indeed bold enough as its prospects were challenging. The initiative in thisregard was taken by the Late Suranjan Dutta, the second son of Late Narasinha Dutta. The college startedwith the Late Professor MotilalChatterjee as Principal and a renownedscholar the Late Jnanendranath Senas Vice- Principal. The number of courses (Hons & Gen) now stands ateighteen. At present sixty-ninesubstantive full-time teachers, twenty-

six part-time teachers, eight contractualwhole-time teachers and thirty guestteachers teach more than five thousandstudents (Morning, Day and Evening)of the College. The Morning is a girls’ shift, the Evening is exclusively for boys and the Day shift is Co-educational. Example : If a student scores 52% in a particular module. His/her grade point forthe module will be {3.00 + 0.035 x (52-40)} = 3.42

62

The semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) will be just the average of the grade points obtained in all the modules of the given semester. If the Numerical Grade Points by a student are denoted by ci (i=1 to 5, as there are 5 modules in each semester), the SGPAwill simply be (∑c i / 5), as all modules have equal weightage.

Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) over four semesters shall be calculated by working out simple average of SGPA for individual semester.

On the basis of CGPA obtained by a candidate over four semesters, class will be awarded as follows :

Both SGPA and CGPA will be rounded off to the second place of the decimal and will be shown as such on the mark sheet.

If a student gets F in one or more modules, she/he shall be deemed to have failed in that/those modules only and shall be required to appear at the subsequent examination for that/those modules in a subsequent semester. A student failing to secure 40% marks in aggregate in a semester shall have to appear at the subsequent examination in all the modules. She/he will however, be permitted to continue to the next semester. A student can appear a maximum number of two times (excluding, but immediately after, his/her regular appearance) to clear a particular module or to clear a particularsemester (for those who fail in aggregate), failing which she/he shall be dropped from the rolls of the University/College. A candidate failing in all courses in a semester examination shall have to repeat the semester examination.

A candidate must secure not less than 35% marks in each of the modules to pass the examination, however, she/he must obtain at least 40% in aggregate to qualify for each semester and the final degree.

5.50-6.00 O (Outstanding) I (First Class)

4.00-4.49 A (Fair) I (First Class)

63

If a candidate gets F grade in one or more modules in a semester examination his/her SGPA in that semester will be temporarily withheld and GPW (Grade Point Withheld) will be marked against SGPA on the mark sheet.

A fresh mark sheet with duly calculated SGPA will be issued when the candidate clears the module (Grade D or above) subsequently within the stipulated time frame.
