With well over 30 years’ vocal experience, he has performed for many Choral Societies across the established choral repertoire and given several song recitals. He is also an established freelance conductor, currently the regular Musical Director of two choirs and with experience spanning both bands and orchestras. Stephen lives in Ewshot near Farnham, Surrey. He is in demand as a tenor soloist, has performed for many Choral Societies and given several song recitals. He has performed much of the established choral repertoire including the Evangelist in Bach’s St. John Passion, Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Requiem and Coronation Mass, Haydn’s The Creation, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle (at Guildford Cathedral with the distinguished baritone Jozik Koc), Puccini’s Messa di Gloria, Britten’s St. Nicolas, Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music, Stainer’s The Crucifixion, Maunder’s Olivet to Calvary, Coleridge-Taylor’s Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast, Ramirez’ Misa Criolla – and even Alfred in Strauss’ operetta Die Fledermaus, to name but a few. A notable recital was an event held at Farnham Castle, shared with the D’Oyly Carte soprano, Emma Mabin. For a more complete repertoire listing, see the next page. Formal voice training began with Edwin Rolles, formerly Head of Music at Frensham Heights School, in 1983 and continued under the guidance of the late contralto Pamela Bowden and the soprano Wendy Eathorne. Over a six-year period he won over thirty first prizes in competitive vocal festivals, including the Four Voices Solo competition at the Rhymney Valley Eisteddfod and the Festival Champion award at the prestigious Bournemouth Music Festival. His current tutor is the English National Opera soprano Cathy Pope. Stephen is a highly-experienced Choral Director and a member of the Association of British Choral Directors. As well as being Rushmoor Male Voice Choir’s Musical Director, a post he’s held since 2001 (and a choir he’s been a member of since 1977), he is also the Musical Director of Kindred Spirits Choir (a choir solely for breast cancer sufferers and survivors). He has taken Rushmoor MVC on three occasions to London’s Royal Albert Hall as participants in the London Welsh Festival of Male Voices, most recently in October 2016, and twice to Oberursel, near Frankfurt, Germany. He was the founding Musical Director of the Aldershot Military Wives’ Choir, affiliated to the Military Wives Foundation, and the Hampshire & Surrey NHS Choir, specifically for NHS staff and associates. He has also been the Musical Director of both Crondall Community Choir and Alton Choral Society. Additionally, Stephen has been the Deputy Festival Director for the South Coast Festival of Male Voices since 2005, a festival held at various locations on the South Coast including Poole’s Lighthouse Centre for the Arts. He has been a Guest Conductor at the Croydon Festival of Male Voices held at Croydon’s famous Fairfield Halls. He was also credited for his vocal directing work with the noted sound artist Thor Mcintyre- Burnie on the sound installation for the Wind Tunnel Project at Farnborough Airport in 2014. In addition to his professional singing and choral directing career, Stephen is an experienced vocal coach and piano tutor, with his main aim, aside from pure training, being to encourage confidence in his pupils.
