Stephen’s Window September 2011
Dear Parish Family and Friends, Sunday September 11, 2011 is a Day of Consequence! To begin with, we will be observing the 10th Anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. If you do not already know, our own Deacon Louane was a volunteer on-site Chaplain at Ground Zero in New York City for nine months immediately following the attacks. That experience has marked her in some profound ways, not least of which is its effect on her health. Those who know her also understand that, like many who experience war or violent conflict in other times and places, she does not talk much about the details of her work during that time. Nevertheless, she has agreed to share a few things with us during each of our two services on that Sunday. Please join us. September 11 is also Start-Up Sunday, the beginning of our new program year at St. Stephen’s. Our annual Ministry Fair will be open in the Parish Hall beginning at 9:00AM between services, and at Coffee Hour following the 10:30AM service. Check out some of the ways you can become involved in ministry, and don’t forget to register children for Sunday School. Thanks to Robin McGrath for her assistance in coordinating the exhib-its, and to all who have offered to share their ministries in this way! And don’t forget Clyde’s Big Breakfast, between the services during the Ministry Fair. We have missed the Breakfast during the summer months, but it has “returned from vaca-tion” and once again welcomes you, your family, and your friends. What a good way to introduce someone to St. Stephen’s! We also welcome back our Choir and look ahead to the new St. Stephen’s Concert Series. Do you consider yourself a patron of the arts? Consider what St. Stephen’s offers and how you can be involved in supporting these won-derful opportunities to extend and share our faith. Wednesday afternoon Bible Study is back in session (2:30 PM in the Davis Room), and we look forward to a new “Spiritual Book Group” beginning in October. Stay tuned as well for upcoming news about other Adult Education offerings. We have had some won-derful series of late and this year will be no exception. Seminarians are coming, closer to the end of the month. We expect two students once again thanks to our partnership with Duke Divinity School and they will be involved in a variety of activities. There is more “new” stuff going on than you can shake a stick at, and the continuation of important and valuable ministries which have served the parish, the community, and the church well over the years helps keep us close to our core. Be here. Be now. Be blessed. Above all, keep the faith. Share the joy. See you in church.

DUKE UNIVERSITY STRING SCHOOL CHAMBER MUSIC CAMPS
St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church was the welcoming host to the Duke University String School Chamber Music Camps for the summer of 2011. The two camps were held the week of June 13th and the week of July 11th from 9 in the morning to 3 in the afternoon. The first week of Camp 47 students participated. The sec-ond week, 50 students. Dorothy Kitchen, member of our church, was Director of the camp and the teachers were Stephanie Swisher, Carlos Bardles, Robert Rempher, and Jessica Long. All the assistants were violin students of high school age who study with teachers at DUSS. The students’ ages ranged from 4 to 18. We also had students from India, Japan, and China. Christopher Kitchen, Dorothy and Joe Kitchen's grandson was a participant in the 2nd camp.
We had violin technique classes, then separated into small groups of matching levels for various kinds of chamber music, duets, trios, solos, and string quartets. We all had “play throughs” of our achievements right before lunch. Cindy Henderson, one of our moms, supervised the snacks and lunch. Everyone went out side for games of kickball, and on especially hot days inside for musical charades or koosh ball relay. The af-ternoon continued with theory classes and a final play through. On Friday at 5:30pm in the sanctuary we held our concerts, playing ALL the pieces we had learned throughout the week, a total for both weeks of 46 pieces of all sorts. On Friday our pizza parties were held on the playground followed by a theory bee where everyone guessed things and answered questions like:”name 30 composers” to a timer. We also had a volunteer solo recital. On Thursday at 11am for both weeks, Dr. Joseph Kitchen gave us a lecture/demonstration of the great Frank Hawkins Kenan organ, and an organ information brochure was given to each student. Many of the theory questions referred to this demonstration. Fr. Kaynor, Cathy, Clyde and all the people who sat at the desk, plus the people who had lunch at the Thursday Eucharist were delightful and appreciative to the stu-dents, and made everyone feel at home. We had nearly 100 people at each concert and all felt uplifted and warmed by the welcome of the church, and the opportunity to present our musical work in the beautiful sanc-tuary.

FINANCIALS ………..
Thank you for your support of St. Stephen's in 2011. Please note that al-most 70% of our 2011 support to date is from parishioner contributions. In 2010 that percentage was 67.5% as July 2010. The increase is a direct re-flection of your pledge increases this year and a result of your faithfulness in stewardship. Start-up Sunday is September 11. And, in just a few weeks our stewardship campaign for 2012 will be underway. Our pledges impact our mission and ministry budgets every year. We often hear talk about what we want and need to be doing as a church. Thank you for making a genuine ef-fort to fulfill our purpose as a church in the Durham community and as a part of the larger Episcopal Church in our country. To whom much is given, much is required. Let's be faithful in fulfilling our calling.

The Episcopal Center at Duke University The students at Duke University have arrived and begun their studies and activities for the fall semester 2011, and the Episcopal Center is ready to welcome them. The Episcopal Center is a ministry of the Diocese of North Carolina. Under the leadership of Duke Chaplain, The Reverend Nils Chittenden, students share Bible study and discussion. They also serve the local community and those further afield through outreach and mission trips. The Episcopal Center fosters fellow-ship and pastoral care for all students, staff and faculty at Duke. The congregation meets weekly to celebrate the Eucharist. St. Stephen’s is represented on the Advisory Board by Jean Losee who is asking for your help in pro-viding meals and financial support. St. Stephen’s is responsible for dinner on Sunday, September 11th, which will follow a Requiem Eucharist in remembrance of the Tenth Anniversary of September 11, 2001. The menu will include chicken fajitas, lemon basil pasta salad, mexican chocolate bread pudding, and cookies. Jean will prepare the fajitas. The pasta salad(s) (need 2) and the Mexican bread pudding(s) (need 2) are easy and the recipes will be provided. We also need some homemade cookies. The kids love sweets!

NETS FOR LIFE UPDATE During 2011 our diocese is participating in a national Episcopal Relief and Development campaign that will have a long term impact on world suffering. We are sending insecticide-treated mosquito nets to Africa. The nets will be distributed by trained local educators who will explain the reason for using them and how to use them. Each $12 net can make a lasting difference for 3 people. We are grateful to each parishioner who has already purchased a net. TO DATE we have collected money to send 172 nets to Africa. That means we are 87% of the way toward reaching our goal of 200 Nets from St. Stephen’s. If you have not yet made your contribution, please do so this month and help us get the last eighth of the way toward completing this campaign. It is easy to do. Just get out your checkbook and enter $12 for each net, payable to St. Stephen’s with "Nets for Life, ERD" on the "for" line. Send the checks to St. Stephen’s, put them in the collection plate, or bring them to the Mission and Outreach table on Start Up Sunday (9/11). Thank you so much.

***New*** Spiritual Book Club will begin meeting every Wednesday at 11:00am to 12 noon in the Davis Room starting October 5th. Our mission state-ment is: To come together in Christ’s name to learn new pathways of exploring, creating, examining and sharing in our quest for spiritual enlightenment and growth. Our first book will be Listening for God, Volume One by Paula J. Carlson and Peter S. Hawkins. Please come prepared to discuss Chapter 1. COOKING WITH AGNES! Beginning in September, we will hold a cooking class for people who are interested in losing or maintaining their current weight. We will be using the delicious French recipes of the Dukan Diet. It is a well-known French diet, the news of which crossed the ocean recently, and the book became one of the New York Times’ bestsellers. Classes will be held on September 17, September 24 and October 1 from 10:30am-11:30am in the kitchen of SSEC. Materials will be provided. THE KNITTERS’ GROUP
The first meeting for the Knitters' Group will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, September 18 at the home of Bobbie Nielsen, 5 Mountain Lake Court, Durham, NC, 27713. THE BOOK NOOK
When I stop by the interesting library shelves from time to time to fetch one book for you...and you...and you, I am always touched by the generosity and reading interests of our book-givers. Whoever you are,
you have good tastes and serious historical tastes. You have introduced me to many excellent writers I might never have met otherwise. Take for example this month, when I discovered a remarkable writer, Rodney N. Usher-Wilson who wrote NO HUMAN AFFAIR: THE OPEN SECRET OF PAUL. He was a priest of the Church of England who adopted the United States as his home. This book is his final and most important work, which his wife found after his death. What is particularly moving is that this brilliant man, who after years of thinking, said he concluded that the historic Canadian faith and time-tested social values are our best hope for a good society. This book is the story of the life of Paul of Tarsus and holds to the author's belief that the history of Europe and America for all time was influenced by Paul's missionary jour-ney. He calls Paul's character and strength a "phenomenon in the history of the world." And what was particularly touching to me was to learn that Sunday after Sunday his letters, bound in a volume frequently called THE WORD OF GOD, are read to millions of people around the world who give the response, "Thanks be to God." If you read this book your own feelings of pride in our history will be humble and thankful. - Marion the Librarian
