Position Overview
Learning & Development
The Department of Justice and Community Safety (department) consists of a large and diverse workforce working from a variety of locations throughout the State of Victoria. The department manages a wide range of portfolios including Corrections Victoria, Youth Justice, Civil Justice, Emergency Management Victoria, Liquor, Gaming and Racing and Consumer Affairs Victoria.
People and Workplace Services’ core functions span the breadth of workplace cultural and people matters, including human resources policy and strategy; organisational culture and change; recruitment, redeployment and retention; performance and development; pay, benefits and workforce reporting; occupational health and safety management; and employment regulations.
People and Workplace Services’ Learning and Development Team is responsible for five areas of learning and development activities in the Department of Justice & Community Safety (DJCS) – Corporate, Youth Justice, Corrections Victoria, learning and performance systems and accredited training via the DJCS Registered Training Organisation.
Ideally the intern will have a passion for diversity and inclusion and a desire to influence community and workplace attitudes through embedding systemic change. Someone with an interest in developing policy informed by lived experience would also be beneficial.
The intern role will:
Provide administrative and logistical support to the business unit including general word processing and data entry
Provide administrative assistance to the business unit
Prepare basic documents including reports, presentations, power point documents, graphs and charts

Attend relevant training to learn about the context of the business unit
Job shadow staff within the business unit
Learn and assist with projects
Attendance at relevant business unit meetings
Completion of other required tasks as directed by the supervisor/manager
Knowledge and skills
Written Communication – produce a range of standard written documents, providing clear information and using language appropriate to the audience.
Verbal Communication – Assesses audience and provides appropriately tailored and clear information and explanations to a range of groups in an effective and confident manner, dealing with challenging behaviour firmly but politely.
Computer Skills – effectively use departmental computer systems for basic word processing, email, appointment scheduling, and internet and intranet functions.
Interpersonal Skills – builds rapport with others in order to understand issues and suggest courses of action appropriate to their needs.
Policy Skills – applies knowledge of policies to guide work and support decision-making, and confidently explains policies to clients and colleagues.
Service Excellence – undertakes work efficiently, focusing on client satisfaction and maintaining service quality despite time constraints while striving to exceed agreed service targets.
