The Brown School of Business and Leadership, named after Baltimore builder Howard S. Brown, opened on Aug. 15, 2008. Since then, our dedicated faculty members have used our state-of-the-art facilities and technology to enhance their instruction, and they are committed to giving personal attention to their students, both in and out of the classroom.

The School of Business and Leadership houses four departments: Accounting; Business Administration; Information Systems; and Legal Studies. Students may focus in a variety of subfields such as accounting, economics, digital marketing, finance, management, entrepreneurship, international business, sport management, e-commerce, technology management, software design, network design, computer forensics, and fashion merchandising. Many students take advantage of the BS/MS degree option, beginning their graduate studies during their senior year in forensics or technology management.

To ensure that our programs remain effective, we continue to study current market trends as well as trends that are projected to emerge five to 10 years from now. Given today’s globalized economy, emerging technologies, and rapid pace of change, our students must be prepared for roles, responsibilities, skills, and jobs that are not even yet defined. We are in a solid position to provide students with the experience and tools to meet those challenges.

Our programs are also closely aligned with Stevenson’s Career ArchitectureSM process, which encourages students to create a successful and rewarding career path. Graduates from our business programs are highly in demand and they are prepared to hit the ground running.

We invite you to visit the campus and the Brown School of Business and Leadership, and I look forward to talking with you in person.

The accounting program provides graduates with the knowledge required to become successful in today’s multifaceted business world. With a blend of accounting, information technology, and business, the program helps students understand contemporary work environments, issues, and challenges.

Study emphasizes financial accounting at the intermediate level, cost accounting, tax accounting, auditing, international accounting, and business law. During the capstone course, students synthesize their knowledge using a business strategy approach.

The accounting curriculum satisfies all requirements for graduates to take the Certified Public Accounting (CPA) examination in Maryland. In addition to passing the CPA exam, applicants for licensure are required by the State of Maryland to acquire a total of 150 credit hours of coursework. The BS/MS option and second bachelor’s degree option are available to help students fulfill the additional 30 credit hours of coursework.

Paralegals may not provide legal services directly to the public except as permitted by law. However, working under the supervision of an attorney, paralegals are vital members of the legal team. They perform such functions as:

• Analyzing and organizing records • Assisting in discovery • Drafting contracts and real estate documents • Drafting pleadings • Gathering information electronically • Incorporating entities • Interviewing witnesses • Investigating cases • Managing trial preparation and litigation support

paralegal studies students have the opportunity to take part in both a mock trial course and stevenson’s mock trial competition team. steven-son’s paralegal studies program is a member of the American mock trial Association. the Brown school of Business and leadership houses a state-of-the-art mock trial courtroom (pictured).

An excellent pre-lAw optionThe paralegal studies program is an excellent option for students interested in applying to law school. The same substantive and procedural courses offered at law schools are offered in Stevenson’s paralegal studies program. A full-time paralegal studies faculty member serves as a dedicated pre-law advisor and assists students with law school applications. Graduates who attend law school find that the paralegal studies program at Stevenson gives them a competitive advantage.

two distinct degreesStevenson University offers two distinct degrees related to law. One is the paralegal studies degree. This legal studies degree prepares students to work in law offices as paralegals; it is used by many students as a pre-law program because it has a dedicated pre-law advisor, offers a Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) review course in the curriculum, and administers the LSAT every year. Many paralegal studies graduates work in law offices as lawyers. Second is the criminal justice degree. This science degree prepares students to work in law enforcement.

ABout the Brown school of Business And leAdership BuildingGround was broken in 2007 and the building opened in 2008; in April 2009, both the building and school were named in honor of Howard S. Brown, a Baltimore builder and developer whose interest in Stevenson’s mission and purpose helped transform the leadership’s goals into an ongoing—and still-growing—reality. Administrators decided to take advantage of this space on the Owings Mills property to expand Stevenson’s academic offerings. Today, the 60,000-square-foot building includes a mock trial courtroom, traditional and high-tech computer classrooms, a law clinic, conference rooms, and the Owings Mills campus library.

FaCiliTy highlighT: FranCis x. pugh CourTrooMCompleted in 2009, the 2,485-square-foot courtroom housed in the Brown School of Business and Leadership includes an evidence room, judge’s chamber, and an electronics control room. The facility features 21 computer screens, four cameras, and a widescreen projector in addition to video high-definition conferencing and touch panel controls on the judge’s bench. There is also space for three judges, a jury deliberation room, and an 18-person jury box. The dynamic courtroom setting and evidence presentation technology broaden students’ mock trial experience as they learn to become expert witnesses. Stevenson’s paralegal classes incorporate the courtroom as a classroom.

In 2010, Stevenson named this facility the Francis X. Pugh Courtroom to recognize Pugh’s significant and ongoing contributions to the University. He served as Director of the Paralegal Studies program for more than 20 years and served as chair of the Paralegal Advising Committee from 1975 until his death in 2012. In 1989, Pugh was the recipient of the Villa Julie College President’s Medal, and in 2003, he was presented with the Founder’s Award. See the paralegal studies page for a photo of the courtroom.
