“HOME OF THE SHARKS” – Established 2007

Just when we were wondering when winter would end, it seems that spring is here, not only with respect to the weather, but, also springing forward one hour starting Daylight Savings on March 11. This is very soon followed by Spring Break which begins this year on Friday, March 16. Pink Shirt Day Celebrated annually around the globe, Pink Shirt Day began in Nova Scotia in 2007, when two students took a stand against homophobic bullying, after a fellow student was harassed for wearing a pink shirt on his first day of school.

This year, the SLSS Rainbow Club collaborated with Student Council on a week-long anti-bullying campaign. At the beginning of the week, Pride flags representing a variety of different orientations in the LGBTQ+ spectrum were displayed in school hallways. Club members and volunteers wrote anti-bullying messages and created artwork in chalk, to greet students on Pink Shirt Day, as they entered SLSS through the Williams and Gilbert entrances. With the help of Mr. Akselrod, club members designed, created and distributed Rainbow-themed Pink-Day buttons to students.

Let's work together to stop bullying by celebrating diversity and promoting positive social relationships. At SLSS, we want to create a community where all people feel safe, valued and respected, regardless of age, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability, or cultural background.

SLSS Fine Arts Showcased at Education Week SLSS Steveston-London Fine Arts, comprised of the visual arts, music, and theatre departments, was showcased at the Richmond school district’s annual Education Week event on March 2 at Aberdeen Centre. The public was treated to performances by SLSS’s talented performing arts students where drama, band, and choir students entertained hundreds of shoppers through the day. In addition, over a hundred pieces of student art were displayed for the public’s viewing pleasure. Special thanks to teachers Mr. Sid Akselrod, Ms. Jean Kosar, Mr. Michael Mikulin, and Mr. Tim Ubial for their leadership and organization in helping to showcase our wonderfully talented students!

More Sharks in the Spotlight SLSS Excels in Game of Apps Competition

Fifteen SLSS students began an ambitious and rewarding journey Last October. They entered an iOS App Development competition offered by the district, The Game of Apps. Over one hundred Grade 9 – 12 students from across the district took part in the now annual event. These students put in over 70 hours of classroom and computer programming time, not to mention the countless hours required of them outside of scheduled seminars.

Participants from our school included the following students: Ved Ballary, Joshua Chen, Michael Cheung, Jack Dai-Tang, Shir Dayan, Onyx Ho, Sargun Khurana, Marcus Lu, Ryan Peng, Paul Tang, Victor To, Claudia Tong, Ethan Wong, Leean Wu, and Harvey Ying.

One of our teams, Team Shark Connect, created a school based app to help students organize their events at the school. Using the app, students are able to join clubs, create club events and populate a calendar with all extra-curricular activities. The hope is that by using this app, students will be able to keep their extra-curricular schedule in one simple and functional place.

Thoughts on Hearing Former US First Lady Michelle Obama By Azadeh Kashani, Kathleen Kong, Urvee Mulyeh On February 15, we had the privilege of being selected to attend the Vancouver Board of Trade’s event hosting Michelle Obama, in what was a sit-down conversation with Bridgitte Anderson and the Former First Lady. Words cannot express how we felt when Mrs. Obama spoke. We have heard and seen many inspirational speeches, but this one was like no other. Not only is she an inspiration to all youth, she is such a motherly figure and everything she said just reconciled with what we stand for. Mrs. Obama touched upon many different topics during her presentation including education, mentorship, leadership, making a change in the world, balancing your schedule, and knowing who your true support system is.

“Education is the foundation that allows me to be who I am today. Start taking your education serious, today.” This was one of her quotes that really stood out to us because as students, our lives circle around school and education, and taking them seriously will only have positive benefits for us in the future. As Mrs. Obama was speaking about having a support system, she said, “It doesn’t behoove us to see each other as competition. There will be no better support system that you have.” She continued on by telling the crowd that we have to support the ones closest to us, not tear each other down.

In order to make a difference and change the world, you have to start small. Be proud of who you are and find what you are passionate about. Use your passion to better the lives of your family your friends and your community. Once you have bettered the lives of those

This app, developed by Ved Ballary, Shir Dayan, Paul Tang, Claudia Tong and Leean Wu, was determined to be the furthest developed and most successful app of the competition, taking home the Glenn Bussey Award for first place. More importantly all SLSS students involved in the project were introduced to the Swift coding language and the use of XCode (a set of developer tools used to create iOS apps). These students persevered through many difficult and time consuming tasks learning about the process of app development and utilizing many cross curricular skills such as communication, collaboration, problem-solving and the value of good old-fashioned hard work.

Congratulations to all students involved as they all showed extreme dedication, commitment and care in the completion of this competition!

closest to you, you have already made a difference. You don't need to be on an international stage to make meaningful change. As long as you are proud of who you are and from where you have come, you will gain the confidence to share your passion with others and use that to make the world a better place.

Although it is important to take our education and leadership roles seriously, she heavily emphasized on making time for friends and family as well, since they are our main roots of support and frankly, they only want the best for us. In a time for where we, the students, believe that grades and volunteer hours mean everything, we must look at the bigger picture. We are the future lawyers, politicians, doctors, teachers, Olympians, and engineers. Although being a well-rounded individual may get you to where you wish to end up, we must be selfless and realize that there is more to the world than just ourselves. Don’t take your academic career, friends, family and time for granted. As Mrs. Obama said that her education allowed her to be where she is today, we must use our knowledge to do good. We may all end up in different occupations and parts of the world, but our generation has a common goal and responsibility of making the world a better place for future generations.

Shark Idol 2018 Student Council hosted the annual Shark Idol competition in February. Semi-finals on February 8 and 9 whittled down the talent pool down to four finalists: Kiran Bassi (Grade 8), Nicole Chung (Grade 9), Sophie Li (Grade 11), and Skye Johnson (Grade 12). On February 20, in front of a packed crowd, the very talented finalists performed in the finals. The judges and the crowd had a difficult job ahead of them as all four finalists had amazing performances. Congratulations to Kiran who was crowned the Shark Idol 2018 winner. She will go on to represent Steveston-London at the RichCity Idol competition later this spring.

Best of luck to Kiran at RichCity Idol!

Sharks at Skills Canada On March 1, Mr. Mergens and a small handful of SLSS students participated in the Skills Canada regional competition at KPU.

In total, over 200 Richmond students from various schools participated in a variety of applied skills competitions, ranging from gravity car racing and spaghetti bridge engineering to graphic design and photography.

Seven SLSS participants were involved in the digital photography and video editing competitions, and therefore represented both our ICT and Art departments. Participants were given 5 hours to storyboard, shoot, and edit their work. They all did wonderfully. In fact, the pair of TJ Caldron (Gr. 11) and Alonso Recaverren (Gr. 11) was awarded 3rd place for the documentary they produced during the contest.

Big thanks to Mr. Akselrod for recruiting some of our photography students. The aim is to send more students next year to participate/compete in several more competition areas.

Dance Team at Notorious Congratulations to the SLSS Dance Team for winning a 4th place trophy at the Notorious Hip Hop Dance Competition at McRoberts Secondary on March 2. It was a very competitive field, and our Dance Team was recognized for their innovative choreography and incredible teamwork. Go Sharks!

Amazing and Talented Sharks Students continue in SLSS’s tradition and long history of excellence

Girls in Engineering Rule! On Saturday March 3rd sixty-one grade eight girls from across Richmond and the Lower Mainland descended on Steveston-London Secondary school to take part in the sixth annual Engineering Explorations 8 event. Twenty-eight of the sixty-one girls were from Richmond schools. This free event is designed to introduce students to the world of Engineering. The girls participate in three different engineering related activities designed and delivered by female engineering students from UBC. This year’s activities had the girls design water filtration units and robotic hands out of everyday materials, and learn about coding through the use of “Circuit Playground Express” kits and Microsoft Makecode.

Social Studies 8 – Learning in Ms. Steblin’s Class Ms. Steblin’s class has been learning many things in the unit on Consumer Fast Project where students had to look at social media. This is what three students said about what they learned:

"Video gaming was a part of my daily routine, so limiting it was strange for me. Using less video games made me more social with my friends and less reliant on games to be my only source of fun outside of school. What I used to think was important in a game, I now realize means nothing outside of it."

"Limiting my social media use was a challenge for me, but mostly I was able to limit my time on it. When I saw other people on social media, it made me realize how addicted some people are. I learned that sometimes people would rather talk to someone on social media, than actually speaking with them in person. Sometimes when people meet "friends" online, that person you have spent hours interacting with might actually e the opposite of what you were expecting. You might not be meeting the "real person." I believe you should meet someone in person before trusting them with any private information."

"I learned a lot from this consumer fast project. I learned that putting limits on yourself and how you spent your time and money can help you realize what is actually important. Because of this fast, I learned that friendship is a lot more than just who you text the most. It is more about who cares enough to spend time with you... As a result of this fast, I am going to spend less time on social media and gaming and more time actually doing things with my friends."

Another unit of study in Social Studies for our grade 8 students in Ms. Steblin’s class is “Worldviews of the World. Ms. Steblin organized presenters from our community to come and speak to the students. Following are some reflections from the students on Islam and Christianity:

Reflections on Islam: "One thing I learned today is that Muhammed was a really kind and patient man."

"One thing I learned about today is that everytime Muslims meet each other they say Salam a Lechum which means peace and may you have peace." - Grade 8, female

"One thing I found very interesting was that the head scarves are not an islamic requirement, but a cultural tradition." - Grade 8, female

Reflections on Christianity: "I was surprised that the Christian Old Testament is the same as the Hebrew Scriptures."

"I find it interesting that in Christianity, God plays such a huge role in propelling people forward. It’s like we're protected by god and we're all god's children and this gives God a special relationship in people's lives."

"For me, the most memorable part was when the pastor talked about Jesus of Nazareth and how he died on the cross to ultimately clear us from our sin. He explained it well and answered my questions about it."

"The one thing I will remember is how he told us that the world was good, but we as humans made it bad. This shows how we're making the earth worse by polluting it daily but we hardly realize it."

Sharks Elementary School Basketball Tournament Steveston-London’s Blue & Gold tournament was held starting March 6th and ran for three days, concluding on the night of the 8th. The focus of this tournament is always on providing a fun experience for all those involved and this year we were happy to welcome schools from Blundell, Errington, Maple Lane, McKinney, Westwind, Wowk, and St. Joseph the Worker. Each game included a “Hot Shot” contest at halftime. It is always nice to see the enthusiasm, respect, and kindness the grade 7 teams bring to the tournament, along with the enjoyment on the faces of Steveston-London students sitting in the stands.

At the end of the day on March 8th the top 3 teams and the sportsmanship awards were acknowledged.

Boys Girls 1st – St. Joseph 1st – St. Joseph 2nd – McKinney 2nd – McKinney 3rd – Westwind 3rd – Blundell Ross Lumb Sportsmanship Award – Blundell Ross Lumb Sportsmanship Award – Wowk

Our sincere gratitude goes to our Athletic Leadership students, Mr. Ververgaert and Ms. Lewin, Sharks student-athletes who refereed the games, and to all the teacher-coaches, principals and vice principals, and students from the elementary schools. We hope everyone had a great time, and our incoming grade 7s (SLSS Grads of 2023) are looking forward to September.

Sharks Athletics #GoSharks Celebrating competition, sportsmanship, and excellence

February brought an exciting conclusion to basketball season for all of our teams.

The grade 8 girls wrestled their way to a V&D wildcard game where they narrowly lost to West Van to finish off their season.

The grade 8, 9 and 10 boys made it all the way to V&Ds, and the senior girls and boys both played in the Lower Mainland championship tournament. All of our teams fought hard and showed tremendous development this season.

Our grade 9 girls team brought home the provincial championship title after an exciting final against KLO. The girls fought back from being down 12 in the third to win it 56-48. It was a well-earned victory to finish off an outstanding season. Additionally, Katie Chan and Mina Chong were named tournament all-stars, and Sharlene Siy was tournament MVP. Prior to the provincials, our girls won the Richmond city title as well as the Vancouver and District title. GO SHARKS!!!

Our table tennis teams had another strong and impressive showing at the RSSAA championships and Provincials. Congratulations to the Girls team for capturing the city title, and to the Boys A and B teams who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. At Provincials, David Lin finished with the bronze medal in Boys Singles, David Lin and Max Ji finished with the silver medal in Boys Doubles, a 4th place finish for the Boys Tier 1 team, a 2nd place finish for the Boys Tier 2 team, and a 6th place finish for the Girls team. Well done!

Spring sports are kicking off with tryouts for our junior ultimate, volleyball and badminton teams happening the week of March 5th. Tryouts for golf, track & field, girls soccer and tennis are coming up as well.

Performing Arts Theatre & Music News

All the World’s a Stage February saw the new semester getting fully underway! Drama 8 started with mime and students are presently working on an extended mime performance with musical accompaniment. In Drama 9/10 and Theatre Production 11/12, students are putting the finishing touches on the interactive performance piece we are calling “Keith and Carol’s Wedding”. In March, SLSS students will be treated with the chance to attend the wedding and be part of the audience as Keith and Carol speak the vows that will bind them together forever! There are some surprises in store for everyone as Keith and Carol’s wacky family members and friends (and maybe some enemies) appear at the wedding.

The Drama Club continued its hard work on the exciting play, “R.E.D.” written by Grade 12 student, Emily Ison, and directed by Grade 12 student, Mandy Huang. The play takes us through the terror of a school lockdown and explores the lives of a group of friends as they struggle to face their uncertain future. The performances will be held in April.

On March 1, students from the Drama Club took part in Education Week at Aberdeen Mall. We were part of a lively contingent of Fine and Performing artists from Steveston-London. We collaborated with the band on a performance of “Game of Thrones” which had Sir Jeffy engaged in defending the honour of Lady Maria and the villagers against a fierce and dangerous dragon. We also presented the thoughtful poem, “Children Learn What They Live”. Students involved included Mehmood Ghani, Mia Shkolnik, Clara Huang, Ved Ballary, Sabrina Ting, James Wen, Jeffy Ng, Maria Thymis, Taylor Kerr, Claire Marcoe, and Simona Volpov.

Musical Notes Our musical Sharks continue to have opportunities to highlight their talents at the several performing events Mr. Mikulin has been able to organize. The following concerts our Choir, Junior and Senior bands and the Jazz Band:
