Moral Heroes – As we honor our graduates this weekend, I was struck by the words of one of my favorite columnists, David Brooks, who reflected upon the virtues of a “moral hero.” These virtues are a special challenge to those who are graduating and are well worth pondering! Here are a few:
Moral Heroes do not overthink their decision before choosing to live this way. They didn’t weigh the costs and benefits or wage any internal battle with themselves. In short, they do not suffer from terminal caution.
At some point in their lives, somebody planted an ideal. Somebody set a high example of what a good life looks like, and the person who went on to become a moral hero just assumed that, of course, that’s what one should do.
Moral Heroes tend to have a “This is what I do” mentality. They don’t have a lofty sense of themselves. They don’t have a sense that they are doing anything extraordinary. “What I do is as simple and common as the laughter of a child,” Mother Teresa once said.
They have a weird obliviousness to inferior pleasures. They are not tempted by worldly success because they are not interested in worldly success. They don’t talk much about personal happiness, because they’re not par‐ticularly interested in themselves, period.
Another quality of the Moral Hero is constant goal expansion. Some believe that a person’s character is set in childhood — that after age 18, people don’t change all that much. That’s not how it is with these people. Moral Heroes are to moral life what lifelong learners are to intellectual life.
A Celebration of Two Hearts – On Friday of this week the church universal celebrates the feast of the most Sacred Heart of Jesus. On the following day the church observes the memorial of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. It is certainly appropriate that these feasts are celebrated side‐by‐side, for the Scriptures reveal to us the love that Jesus and Mary have for one another.
Honoring the Apostle to Germany – Tuesday the church celebrates the feast of the great Benedictine, St. Boniface, who is considered to be the founder of Christianity in Germany. One of the earliest Benedictine parishes in our diocese was the parish of St. Boniface, in the village of St. Boniface, Pennsylvania. When my great grandparents emigrated from Germany, they settled in St. Boniface, and in fact three of the 12 children entered religious life with the Benedictines: a priest, a brother, and a sister.
A Deacon’s Retreat ‐ Our prayers are with Deacon Gene this week as he makes his annual retreat with his fellow dea‐cons. It is said that a retreat is a wonderful opportunity for a person to “recharge his batteries.” May the abundant graces of the Holy Spirit come upon our deacon and restore and refresh him.

ARISE TOGETHER IN CHRIST: As you pack your bags and head out to your summer destina‐tions, St. John’s ARISE Together in Christ Parish Team wishes you a peaceful and relaxing summer season. While you are soaking up the summer sun and fun, we will be busy planning our parish’s first season of the new spiritual renewal process called ARISE Together in Christ that is sweeping the Diocese of Altoona‐Johnstown.

CHOIR CONCERT: Next Sunday, June 10, at 7:00 PM the adult choir will present a concert of some of their best music, including favorites like We Are Called, You Are Mine, How Beautiful and many more. This con‐cert will be recorded and cds will be available for purchase in the fall. This cd will include sev‐eral songs sung by the youth and adult choirs from Sts. Peter & Paul Parish. All proceeds from the concert and sales of the cd will benefit our sister parish in Marmont, Haiti. If you love hearing our choir, you don’t want to miss this special concert!
A WINE AND CHEESE PARTY will be held in the Gathering Space of the Church immediately following the 7:00 PM Haiti Concert on Sun‐day, June 10.

DIOCESAN FAITH DAY AT DELGROSSO’S ON SUNDAY, JUNE 24: Highlights of the day include; Liturgy at 3:00PM with Bishop Mark; Family Faith Procession; picnic in the diocesan pavilion at 5:00PM (tickets for the meal can be purchased at diocesan pavilion #2 at 5:00); park rides and games; water slides and Laguna Splash. A nonperishable food item or free‐will offering for Catholic Charities will be collected that day. All day Fun Passes are available for a reduced price of $20 with a Faith Day voucher. $3 of each pass purchased will be donated back to the Angel Fund for Camp Zaccheaus and Camp Timothy. Faith Day vouch‐ers are on the kiosk in the gathering space.
