Industrial Research, a key in-house driver for portfolio innovation at LMS

High-tech field, bringing critical value to our customers

LMS must continuously innovate its products and services

Innovation needs fundamental as well as industrial research

LMS motivates its R&D staff to combine the best of both worlds

Work at the edge of technology

Harvest the fruits from fundamental research worldwide

…. while being inspired by industrial end-users and

address industry’s burning needs from the start,

delivering solutions to real industrial problems

Strive for a PhD with industrial and academic supervision

Basic Science Value

Quality

Applied Science Value

Valorization of research results in industry means “bring a solution to

our challenges” and not “finding a problem for a new solution”

Be aware that many steps need to be taken to turn research results into something that can be sold

Many questions must be addressed before

achieving customer added vale & returns:

 What further investments are needed?

 Has the technology been validated?

 Are field trials needed?

 Professionalizing your solution?

Making it ready for series production

 Packaging, Solution Marketing

 Cost & Quality assurance

 Supply Chain, Delivery

 Training, Cost-of-change

 Post-sales, Maintenance’

a reform with a purpose”

Cross the chasm: you reach mass volume

(& profit) only after you’ve convinced a

series of ‘different classes of end users’

LMS R&D Approach:Partnering to share risks and competences

Partnering with different Actors and Stakeholders enables

 Risk, Cost and Competencies sharing

 Building networks and accessing networks

 Partnering happens in different formats

 Informal or formal bilateral cooperation

With lead customer(s) in technology projects

In an RTD project context (Regional, EC)

 In business alliances

 Key success factors:

 Clear Win-Win for all involved

Fitting into the strategies of all partners, with view to build long term relationship from the start

Professionalism in execution: be specific and deliver upon expectations

LMS R&D Expertise: Partnering in collaborative research programs

Collaborative research projects as innovation framework

Partner with key product manufacturers: study the right problem

The real needs come from our users – validation for market-relevant applications

e.g. with Airbus, Eurocopter, BMW, PSA, Renault, Toyota, EDF, Rolls-Royce

Partner with (inter)national top-universities: use the best methods

e.g. KU Leuven, Univ. Liège, PoliTo, PoliMi, UNICAL, INSA Lyon, Univ. Bristol, UTCluj

 Access to top-class research results

Stimulate research to address areas of relevance

 Bridge from state-of-the-art to state-of-the-use

Partner complementary technology partners (research institutes + companies)

Fraunhofer, IFP, ONERA, DLR, EADS, IDIADA, MicrodB, TNO …

Some of these are competitors Coopetition …

Over 100 partners, active and intensive multi-year cooperation with more than 30 academia

PhD career developmentin academia and in industry

• Perhaps 10% of PhDs will pursue

the academic ladder (up to full professor)

• 90% of starting PhDs will grow into

(leading) positions in industry and

society!

• And: industry determines the GDP, which is

positively correlated with university funding!

Conclusions for academia:

• Dual funnel role & responsibility!

• Equip PhD students with an open mind

towards industrial and societal issues,

and foster their skills to address them!

• This applies to doctoral schools, industry-

involved PhDs (as IWT Flanders Baekeland)

and the Marie Skłodowska-Curie programme

Over the last 20 years, LMS hosted a large number of research fellows, who delivered fruitful R&D results, while developing their skills/careersand building a huge network of partners and of people

Most Marie Curie fellows embarked on an industrial career

 In research

 In product development

 In application studies

Not uncommonly evolving into management (research & general)

But also some pursued an academic track

Invariably keeping industry cooperation in high regard

Concerned about transforming knowledge into economic added value

Becoming next generation partners, home institutions

Sending next generations of students and researchers

Together composing a unique community, “living” the European Research Area

Conclusions

To build our future, our society needs:

 Talented people

 Continuous Innovation

Internationalization: the world is our source, our medium and our goal

This requires partnering and building networks around the globe and across

disciplines and actors

The EC Marie Curie program has been instrumental to LMS since 1992

We are happy to have developed a community of skilled Young Engineers

… now employed at industries, customers and universities worldwide,

a lasting value network forever

Our message to our fellows:

Reach out, explore and build your own network – the future is yours
