A bell rings and the first hymn is said (at home you may wish to sing)

Who are these like stars appearing, these, before God’s throne who stand? Each a golden crown is wearing; who are all this glorious band? Alleluia! Hark, they sing, praising loud their heavenly King.

Who are these of dazzling brightness, clothed in God’s own righteousness? These, whose robes of purest whiteness, shall their lustre still possess, still untouched by time’s rude hand? Whence came all this glorious band?

These are they who have contended for their Saviour’s honour long, wrestling on till life was ended, following not the sinful throng; these who well the fight sustained, triumph through the Lamb have gained.

These are they whose hearts were riven, sore with woe and anguish tried, who in prayer full oft have striven with the God they glorified; now, their painful conflict o’er, God has bid them weep no more.

These, the Almighty contemplating, did as priests before him stand, soul and body always waiting day and night at his command: now in God’s most holy place blest they stand before his face.

For you alone are the Holy One,you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High,Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit,in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

The COLLECT (THE PRAYER FOR THE DAY) and the Priest introduces a short period of silent prayer with the words “Let us pray” Almighty God, who by the mission of the Bishop Saint Augustine of Canterbury called the English people into the wondrous light of the Gospel, grant through his intercession, we pray, that faithful to that same Gospel proclaimed we may strive to make known your truth and build up your Church on the foundations he laid. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING1 Thessalonoans 2:2-8It was our God who gave us the courage to proclaim his Good News to you in the face of great opposition. We have not taken to preaching because we are deluded, or immoral, or trying to deceive anyone; it was God who decided that we were fit to be entrusted with the Good News, and when we are speaking, we are not trying to please men but God, who can read our inmost thoughts. You know very well, and we can swear it before God, that never at any time have our speeches been simply flattery, or a cover for trying to get money; nor have we ever looked for any special honour from men, either from you or anybody else, when we could have imposed ourselves on you with full weight, as apostles of Christ.

4

Page 5: stjameschurchhanslopev1.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewA bell rings and the first hymn is said (at home you may wish to sing) Who are these like stars appearing, these, before God’s

Instead, we were unassuming. Like a mother feeding and looking after her own children, we felt so devoted and protective towards you, and had come to love you so much, that we were eager to hand over to you not only the Good News but our whole lives as well.

This is the Word of the Lord Thanks be to God

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 117Go out to the whole world; proclaim the Good News.O praise the Lord, all you nations, acclaim him all you peoples!Go out to the whole world; proclaim the Good News.Strong is his love for us;he is faithful for ever.Go out to the whole world; proclaim the Good News.

GOSPEL Alleluia, alleluia!I am the good shepherd, says the Lord;I know my own sheep and my own know me.Alleluia!

The Lord be with you and also with youHear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke Glory to you, O Lord. The Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them out ahead of him, in pairs, to all the towns and places he himself was to visit. He said to them, ‘The harvest is rich but the labourers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest to send labourers to his harvest. Start off now, but remember, I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. Carry no purse, no haversack, no sandals. Salute no one on the road. Whatever house you go into, let your first words be, “Peace to this house!” And if a man of peace lives there, your peace will go and rest on him; if not, it will come back to you. Stay in the same house, taking what food and drink they have to offer, for the labourer deserves his wages; do not

move from house to house. Whenever you go into a town where they make you welcome, eat what is set before you. Cure those in it who are sick, and say, “The kingdom of God is very near to you.”’

At the end: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

THE PRAYERS

These words may be used:Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

or Lord, hear us: Lord, graciously hear us.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

The Prayers end:Merciful Father, accept these prayersfor the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

THE PEACEJesus says: ‘Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.If you love me, rejoice because I am going to the Father’. Alleluia. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. Alleluia!

THE MINISTRY OF THE SACRAMENT

Sing praise to Christ the Saviourthe Lord of heav’n and earth;whose glory spans the ages, and brings all life to birth. In sending his apostleshe speaks the hopeful word, that through his timeless offeringcreation is restored.

In humble, quiet obedienceAugustine heard God’s call, spurred by his Holy Fatherhis purpose to fulfil. Though doubtful and uncertain, beset by anxious fear, sweet Wisdom’s inspirationgave strength to persevere.

As bearer of the gospelto England’s shores he came;and ‘neath the spreading oak treepreached boldly of the sameLord Christ, who in compassionredeemed a world of sin, unlocking heaven’s kingdomfor all who trust in Him.

So moved by his orationboth excellent and true, his new won royal patronallowed their passage through;into the royal city, led by the holy crosswith joyful alleluias,

to seek and save the lost. Now lift we then our voicesto sing Augustine’s praise, that by his prayer and patternwe may receive God’s grace;and bearing the same gospelapostles we may prove,in every word and actionto celebrate Christ’s love.

It is indeed right and good, our duty and our salvation,always and everywhere to give you thanks,holy Father, almighty and eternal God,through Jesus Christ our Lord.Today we honour St Augustine of Canterbury, who in your loving providence enabled your Church to grow in spirit as the body of Christ.To your children he faithfully proclaimed the good news of salvationand nourished them by ministering your sacraments.Through a pastor’s love he led your people to share your graceand witness to the world in the communion of one true faithand in the work of selfless charity.On this his feast, we join with him to praise youand in the company of angels and all the host of heavenwe sing for ever of your glory:Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,heaven and earth are full of your glory.Hosanna in the highest.Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.Hosanna in the highest.Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness; grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and winemay become the body and bloodof our Lord Jesus Christ;

who in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying:

TAKE, EAT; THIS IS MY BODY WHICH IS GIVEN FOR YOU; DO THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME.

9

Page 10: stjameschurchhanslopev1.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewA bell rings and the first hymn is said (at home you may wish to sing) Who are these like stars appearing, these, before God’s

In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying:DRINK THIS, ALL OF YOU; THIS IS MY BLOOD OF THE NEW COVENANT, WHICH IS SHED FOR YOU AND FOR MANY FOR THEFORGIVENESS OF SINS. DO THIS, AS OFTEN AS YOU DRINK IT, IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME.

Great is the mystery of Faith:

All sayChrist has died, Christ is risen,Christ will come again

And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption.

As we bring before you this bread and this cup, we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you.

Lord, may this sacrifice, which has made our peace with you, advance the peace and salvation of all the world.Strengthen in faith your pilgrim Church on earth;your servant n our bishop, and all the bishops.

Welcome into your kingdom our departedbrothers and sisters, and all who have left this world in your friendship.

Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom

the virgin Mother of God, of James, Simon & Jude, and all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever,

through Jesus Christ our Lord;by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen.

All say Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name;thy kingdom come; thy will be done;on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,as we forgive those who trespass against us.And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

BREAKING OF THE BREAD

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us.Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION FOR THOSE AT HOME

Say the following prayerfully and quietly before saying the Prayer for Spiritual Communion:

Jesus my Lord, I thee adore, O make me love thee more and more

Come to my heart Lord Jesus, there is room in my heart for thee.
