Murphy, Lee reflect on freshman session, address key issues

Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographerRep. Patrick Murphy was the keynote speaker at the Jefferson Day dinner held by the Democratic Party of St. Lucie County at the Inn at Ocean Village Saturday, May 18. Murphy spoke of his first session and how he has tried to work across the aisle with bipar-tisan politics.

“He’s not Yelling Anymore.....”

I’m so very happy, I just cannot believe the difference Mutter’s Hearing Center made in my life! The last place I went they stuck hearing aids in my ears and told me I could hear better when I really could not. I was so unhappy, my husband and I could not communicate. That was not the case with Joe, he took time to listen and I now hear better than I ever have. My husband does not have to yell at me anymore, I use to think he was mad at me all the time be-cause of the yelling; now we can actually just talk. Thank you Joe Mutter and Mut-ter’s Hearing Center.

polarizing West. Being on the list presented

its challenges throughout the session and will call for an even greater voter turnout next year, Murphy told attendees at the Inn at Ocean Village, where the event was held. Attendees included county Clerk of Court Joe Smith, Tax Collector Chris Craft and Supervisor of Elections Gertrude Walker. “One thing I do want to remind

you all is we got to start now. I’m on this target list — ‘Top 10 Most Vulnerable,’ I think they call it,” Murphy said. “Do you have any idea how hard it is to be biparti-san and get something done while being on this so-called ‘Target List’ of the Republican party? They don’t even want to be seen sitting next to me.” During his speech, Murphy

said bipartisanship is key in mov-ing issues forward in a Republi-can-dominated House. “I campaigned on bipartisan-

ship, on working together, on getting stuff done because ... ma-jority really does have the rule,” Murphy said. “They really get to control what bills come to the floor, how they’re amended, what the process is. “So the only way we can get

anything done right now is if we have bipartisanship. I’ve been working very hard at that.” Murphy said that while he

championed the concept of cross-ing party lines to pass legislation, there are key issues he remains steadfast on, including Medicaid and Social Security. “Turns out this whole voucher

idea the Republicans are pro-posing, it isn’t a good idea,” said Murphy, who stressed the num-bers don’t add up in Republican plans for Medicaid. Murphy, who said he’s been

working to establish a good rela-tionship with the Army Corps of Engineers, said he’s also working with the Department of Interior and Department of Agriculture to secure funding for local inlet dredging and beach renourish-ment projects. “This is one of the top issues

for me. I grew up in the Florida Keys, fishing and diving,” Mur-phy said. “The environment is critical and it’s not just import-ant because I like clean air and clean water and I want my kids and grandkids to have it, but the truth is, that’s a big part of our economy.” “For every dollar spent on our

environment, it comes back 4:1. So these are smart investments.” Murphy said he recently met

with Ben Bernanke, chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, to dis-cuss the economy and things are looking up.“America, right now, is poised

for a serious recovery,” Murphy

said. “Unemployment is slowly coming down. There are no signs of inflation.” While optimistic about a full

recovery from the 2008 recession, Murphy cautioned his audience there is still much to be done in order to heal. “I’m not for class warfare,

but when you have individuals like Mitt Romney paying 14, 15 percent (in taxes) and the small business owners and the folks in this room, who create jobs are paying 35, 39 percent — That’s not right.” Murphy said help is on the way

for struggling entrepreneurs and small business owners. “I’m working on several bills

right now to enable lending to those who are trying to create a business,” said Murphy, who is on Financial Services and Small Business committees in the House. “There are a lot of people out

there with great ideas, but they can’t get a loan for a thing.” Florida House Rep. Larry Lee

Jr. D-Port St. Lucie, thanked the room of supporters during his address. “This process, I could not have

done it without this organization, the Democrats of St. Lucie Coun-ty and some Republicans that believed in me,” Lee said. “Be-cause as you know, it got really nasty the last two weeks of the election.” During his freshman session,

Lee co-sponsored 14 different bills ranging in issues from ed-ucation, energy and utilities to election ethics. Lee vowed to keep fighting for the well-being of his constituents in St. Lucie County, while advocating for bipartisan-ship to get things done. “It was a very trying time, the

first two weeks up there, feeling my way through ... ,” Lee said. “I realized in order to get anything done up there in that Republi-can-dominated legislature, I had to go across the aisle.” During her introduction of Lee,

school board member Kathryn Hensley praised Lee for his will-ingness to listen to the needs of his constituents. “We are very, very pleased that

we have someone who represents St. Lucie County, who speaks for St. Lucie County, has the courage to walk the walk and stand up for what he knows we need in Talla-hassee,” Hensley said.

Amazing aqua van from Fort Pierce to make national TV debut

TREASURE COAST — Extreme fish aquariums are the ultimate status symbol, according to the experts on National Geographic’s hit show, “Fish Tank Kings.” If they’re right, then Sunrise

Ford of Fort Pierce has some seri-ous bragging rights. The dealership and “Fish

Geeks” from the show teamed up to repurpose a 1970s Volkswagen mini bus into an 800-gallon salt-water aquarium. The painstaking process to transform the mini bus into a living work of art is chron-icled on the show’s Season 2 premiere episode, set to air June 1 at 9 p.m. on Nat Geo Wild. The show was shot over a

three-month period beginning in November, Sunrise Ford vice president and general manager Mike Wetzel said. Wetzel, who used to have a

150-gallon saltwater aquarium in his South Hutchinson Island home, said the creative idea stemmed from his personal tank.

Wetzel owned the tank until 2004, when hurricanes Frances and Jeanne destroyed it after an algae bloom formed because of the extended power outage. Fishy that the amazing aqua

van isn’t a Ford? Well, Wetzel plans to open a new Volkswagen franchise on the Treasure Coast sometime next year, where the aquarium will be housed as the showroom’s showpiece. “We want to have the dealer-

ship to be kind of like a mini mu-seum with some vintage Volkswa-gens in there, some buses and some bugs,” Wetzel said. The decision to take on the

Volkswagen brand was the per-fect fit, Wetzel said. “We just really like the prod-

uct,” said Wetzel, who has been contemplating the move since 2008. “We like the vision the company had. We just liked the direction they were heading.” Living Color Aquariums in Fort

Lauderdale, who heads the show, immediately fell in love with the groundbreaking idea, Wetzel said.

the service, held at St. Bernadette Catholic Church. “It is foolish and wrong to

mourn the men who died,” Vaughn said, quoting World War II Army Gen. George S. Patton. “Rather, we should thank God that such men lived.” Vaughn, who handles one-

third of the circuit’s felony cas-es, oversaw the March grand jury proceedings in the Morales case. Morales was fatally shot in February after a traffic stop and pursuit. The man authorities say pulled the trigger is awaiting trial in a Martin County jail for safety reasons. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. In all, 11 law enforcement offi-

cers from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, Port St. Lucie Police and Fort Pierce Police departments were remembered. The memorial service marked the end of Law Enforcement Memo-rial Week in St. Lucie County, a local extension of National Police Week. Fort Pierce Police Chief R. Sean

Baldwin recalled the day Morales was killed. Baldwin described an encounter he had with a man at a stoplight just minutes away from the Fort Pierce street Morales died on. Baldwin, who was on high alert from the tragedy, said the burly man said something unexpected.

“He said, ‘Officer, I appreciate what you do,’” Baldwin said. “And he left before I knew what hap-pened. “Those five words, ‘I appreciate

what you do,’ at that time, at that moment, after that loss, meant so much to me personally.” Sheriff Ken Mascara said the

pain from the searing loss has been eased by the outpouring of love from the community after Morales’s death. “We’ve come together. We’ve

experienced a lot of comfort from the community,” Mascara said. “It says a lot about our commu-nity.” St. Lucie County Commissioner

Kim Johnson said it’s vital for the community to unite and salute its fallen heroes. Johnson’s District 5 covers PGA Village and Tradi-tion. “It’s very important, because

we look back at the life that once was,” Johnson said shortly before the service began. “They give us the strength to carry on the jour-ney toward a better future with the idea of us going places they never got a chance to go, doing stuff they never got a chance to do ...” The Rev. Victor Ulto of St. Ber-

nadette Catholic Church said his parish was honored to host the event for the third year in a row. “God gave us this beautiful

church to be a place where we can pray, we can heal and we

can love,” Ulto said. “There’s no more suitable time for us to do that than a memorial service for our police officers, especially this year with the recent death of Sgt. Morales. So it’s an honor.”

private interviews beginning June 3. The finalists will also tour the county and participate in numer-ous school activities, national search consultant Jim Huge said. “It will be a whole series of

activities we’re putting together,” said Huge, who was instrumen-tal in helping find current Su-perintendent Michael Lannon a decade ago. “It will all be open to the public so that they can ask questions.” Board member Troy Ingersoll

said his ideal candidate is a dy-namic, business savvy leader who is dedicated to furthering his or her education. “Qualities and characteristics

important to me are honesty and truth,” Ingersoll said. “Someone that is fiscally responsible. Some-one who has obtained or is ac-quiring a doctorate degree. That just shows they want to better themselves, because we believe in being life-long learners. Learning doesn’t stop when you graduate

high school. It continues your whole, entire life.”Ingersoll’s fellow board mem-

ber, Deborah Hawley, echoed the same sentiment. “The qualities/qualifications

we are looking for in a new su-perintendent include account-ability, visionary, relationship builder, has an understanding of Common Core Standards, prov-en leadership record, Master’s degree or higher, commitment to living in St. Lucie County and a solid understanding of the com-plexities of education with regard to legislation and finance,” Haw-ley said in an emailed statement. Board member Carol Hilson

said she’s confident a great leader lies in the six remaining appli-cants. “I believe the top quality is in-

tegrity. Also humility with excel-lent leadership skills would follow along right behind,” Hilson said in an email. “The person cho-sen must understand ‘the whole

child’ and the connection of pov-erty to student achievement. We are a community that embraces ‘Kids At Hope.’” “I do feel there is great talent

and leadership in the candidates we have reviewed,” Hilson said. Meanwhile, as the tireless hunt

for a new schools leader forg-es on, current Superintendent Michael Lannon, 67, prepares for his bittersweet departure. Lan-non, who recently celebrated his 45th year in education, said he plans to spend much-needed time with his family. Lannon served as superintendent for the past 10 years. “The focus is going to be having

our grandchildren with us and being able to spend time in and around their family structure and maybe give their parents a night off, occasionally,” said Lannon, who added he and his wife’s clos-est grandchild of five lives three hours away. Although he plans to travel

often to see family, Lannon said he will always remain in St. Lucie County. “This is our home,” Lannon

said. Of any career experience he’s

ever had, Lannon said serving as St. Lucie County Schools super-intendent has been one of the most challenging, yet rewarding ones.

“I would have to say it is one of the most consuming roles that anyone can ever have. It’s a pro-fessional and technical job that requires a great deal of experi-ence and constancy of learning ... ,” Lannon said. “In St. Lucie’s case, the superintendent is the CEO of the largest business. You’d have to get down to Palm Beach to find a business as big as us.” “The superintendent is respon-

sible for 5,000 employees, 42 campuses and billions of dollars in public property known as school houses and ball fields, buses and all of those kinds of things.” Lannon said he hopes to leave

a lasting legacy of excellence in education, adding his epitaph will one day read, “He was a teacher.” “Education is a journey. We are

all learning every day,” Lannon said. “The more we learn, the better we are.” When speaking of his greatest

accomplishments, Lannon said he’s particularly proud of the district’s rapid progression during his decade at the helm. “As a school system, we’ve built

literally a billion dollars worth of schools and infrastructures and technologies in this 10-year peri-od of time,” Lannon said. “We’ve grown by about 11,000 students. We’ve gone through great pros-perity and for the past five years, a great loss of resources and yet,

boys and girls are better provided for today than ever in history.” Lannon said the feat of high

graduation rates and other school successes weren’t achieved alone.

“That’s really a credit to the people, the employees and the

school board of St. Lucie County Public Schools,” he said. “This board knows the direction it wants to go in and has known since before I got here.” “That’s what gives me faith that

there will be great direction when they choose a new superinten-dent.” Lannon also offered a few words

of advice for that incoming super-intendent. “Have a vision. Have high ener-

gy. Understand who we are. Move the agenda. That’s what it is,” Lannon said. An accomplishment Lannon

dotes on is a partnership between his schools and textbook pub-lisher Houghten Miffin Harcourt, which provided thousands of dol-lars in private funding to further early childhood learning in the county. Money was given to area preschools to provide an exten-sive curriculum for the county’s youngest learners and free train-ing was offered to staffers. “It focuses on early childhood

education, so that we’re reaching down below than what the state has provided some resources for,” Lannon said. The funding has allowed chil-

dren of income-restricted families a greater opportunity for aca-demic success, which will last a lifetime Lannon said. “We can have children coming

into kindergarten with greater readiness skills because in com-munities of great poverty, you have enormous disparity between children who are entering kin-dergarten in what they know and what they can do,” Lannon said. “Families of wealth have always provided so their children know their ABC’s and numbers. Some can read.” “Families of poverty don’t have

that opportunity,” Lannon con-tinued. “In single- or no- parent homes, you may have someone who is illiterate themselves as an adult trying and doing the very best they can, but illiterate adults don’t make literate children, so you have to have interventions earlier so the children have an

equal chance of competing with their peers as they enter formal-ized schools.” Always the perfectionist, Lan-

non said he isn’t leaving without regrets. “Across the board, all of the

things I’ve told you that I think are good, I’d want more of. I’m a very impatient man,” Lannon said. “I’d want more academ-ic success. I’d want more kids graduating from high school and going onto higher education, even though we’ve had an enormous rise in that.” Looking back, Lannon said

he wished there was more he could have done to provide more resources for district staff and teachers, a force of highly skilled workers he calls “brilliant.” Bud-get constraints in recent years prevented it, Lannon said. “Our teachers should be paid

much more than they are,” Lan-non said.

Job recovery reports in for Martin and SLC

TREASURE COAST — Things are getting better on the Florida jobs front, but St. Lucie County is still suffering one of the state’s highest unemployment rates. “This region was one of the ones

with the most construction be-fore (the housing crash) started to happen,” Odaly Victorio, communi-cations coordinator for Workforce Solutions, said. “We had a lot of growth before then. When we fell, we fell hard.” Martin’s unemployment rate is

below the statewide average, but comes in as the 29th highest out of 67 counties. The two counties make up the Port St. Lucie Metro-politan Statistical Area, which is hovering over the state and nation-al unemployment averages. According to the monthly jobs

report the Department of Econom-ic Opportunity released on Friday, May 17, Florida’s unemployment rate was at 7.2 percent in April, the lowest it’s been since September 2008. The state’s unemployment rate has declined in year-over-year

comparisons for 30 months. The state’s unemployment rate

was down 0.3 percentage points from March, and 1.7 from the year before. The national average for April was 7.5 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Through much of the economic downturn, Florida’s unemployment rate was higher than the nation’s. St. Lucie had the state’s fourth

highest unemployment rate in April, 8.9 percent. It didn’t move from the month before, but was down from 10.7 percent in April 2012. Hendry, Flagler and Putnam counties had the three highest un-employment rates respectively.Martin’s unemployment rate in

April was 6.7 percent, down from 6.9 in March. In April 2012, Martin was at 8.1 percent unemployment. The Port St. Lucie MSA came in with an 8.2 percent unemployment rate for April, down from 8.3 in March. In April 2012, it was at 9.8 percent unemployment. “Overall, the region has recovered

over the year 1,900 jobs,” Victorio said. The state added about 17,000 pri-

vate-sector jobs in April. Over the year, it’s added close to 119,000.

Photo courtesy of Mike WetzelSunrise Ford and stars from the hit TV show ‘Fish Tank Kings’ teamed up to repurpose a 1970s Volkswagen mini bus into an 800-gallon saltwater aquarium. The painstaking process to transform the mini bus into a living work of art is chronicled on the show’s Season 2 premiere episode, set to air June 1 at 9 p.m. on Nat Geo Wild.

“As far as we know, no one has ever attempted to convert a mini bus into a tank,” Wetzel said.Right now, the empty bus is

being housed in the Sunrise Ford showroom. A refill party for the public is planned for some time in mid-July. And anticipation for the show’s premiere is mounting, Wetzel said. “I was out to lunch with some-

one today, who basically said this is the talk of the town,” Wetzel said. “It is creating quite the buzz. “… Being somewhat of an

enthusiast as far as salt water tanks are concerned, I’m pretty excited to see it and I know a lot of other people are.” Living Color made the acrylic

tank and Wetzel’s talented staff in the body shop spent three months stripping the bus of parts like the engine, transmission and the seats, excluding the drivers and passenger seats. The front seats remained untouched for a special reason, Wetzel said. “You can actually still sit in the

cab compartment and get your picture taken in the cab compart-

ment with the aquarium behind you,” Wetzel said. “It’s quite the undertaking what they did. It really looks really neat.” The tank will include fish

indigenous to Atlantic waters, including string rays, cobia, juve-nile pompano, look down Selene vomers and gobies, Wetzel said. In the episode, “Fish Geeks”

Francis and Heather go diving off the Florida coast to collect ven-omous yellow sting rays for the aqua van, as it’s referred to on the show. Tank designer Jose hand

molds, paints and installed each piece of the coral décor for the tank. “We’re going for a ‘60s psyche-

delic theme, so we’re not really looking for natural, we’re looking for some pop,” Jose said in a pre-view video on the show’s website.

Eagles put focus on repetition during spring practice

ST. LUCIE WEST — Follow-ing a season where losses were plenty and came by a razor-thin margin, the St. Lucie West Centennial High School football team understands a turnaround doesn’t start in August. Following a district champion-

ship in 2011, the Eagles fin-ished a nightmare 2012 with a 1-8 record, including five losses outside of eight points or less. Despite the frustration of a year ago, the Eagles began 2013 with a renewed spirit as they prepared for their spring game against Jensen Beach. “All the coaches have been

enthusiastic about how the kids have been working out since January and it has continued since they’ve put the pads on,” fourth-year Eagles head coach Ron Parker said. “We are getting in and out of our drills in time. “They aren’t just standing

around. We are moving and it’s enables us to get more reps.” The importance of time is

caused by Parker’s plan for his players to develop comfort at a singular position. “Kids aren’t playing on both

sides of the ball,” Parker said. “The players are just learning one spot. “We want to put them in a posi-

tion where they can play fast. If they think too much, it slows them down, but when they feel comfortable, they’ll get to the ball

on defense and they’ll know what to read on offense.” Centennial entered the spring

with big holes from last year’s team to fill on both sides of the ball. The Eagles have lost leading

tackler A.J. Villareal, leading receiver Ricky Rodriguez, as well starting offensive lineman Justin Martinez and starting defensive tackle Jaynard Bostwick, who will be playing football at the University of Florida. With the loss of talent on both

sides of the ball, the Eagles will look toward the leadership of re-turners Elijah Richardson, Josh Panteleon and leading rusher Greg Green. Fueled by the dis-appointment of last season, the three seniors have brought an intensity to the table in an effort to energize the entire team. “Thinking back to last year,

1-8 really makes me sick inside,” Green said. “That wasn’t a good year, but it just made me want to work harder at practice for my team. It makes me want to get better and prove this year will be different, starting in the spring.”

Show celebrates abilitiesFORT PIERCE — Tasha Patter-

son is passionate about every-thing she does. Whether she is teaching yoga or dance, choreo-graphing a ballet or helping those with disabilities perform onstage, she gives full measure. The dancer and choreographer

grew up in Vancouver, Brit-ish Columbia and studied with the prestigious Royal Winnipeg Ballet. She eventually found her way to Japan, where she made a name for herself as a choreogra-pher and dancer and worked with Madonna and Diana Ross. She also studied Zen meditation and yoga.Healing has always been a

motif for Tasha, her sister, Tara Anstensen, and their mother, Tina Patterson. They are known to many as the 3 T’s. Tara is a choreographer and massage and water therapist at Martin Health System. Tina, who once ran the Performing and Visual Arts Center at the ARC of St. Lucie County, now is a volunteer dance teacher at both the ARC of Martin and St Lucie counties. All three have joined forces to present a

special program. On June 8, they will debut

“Life,” a show that integrates art-ists with disabilities and without them. It will be performed June 8 at the Sunrise Theatre and will benefit Very Special Arts, a na-tional program that helps people with disabilities participate in and enjoy the arts. “The performances are based on

waking people up,” Tasha Patter-son said. “There’s a way to look at life that creates peace. My shows are like a big yoga class in the shape of a show.”This year’s theme, “Life,” starts

with life’s beginning.“You start with cosmic energy,”

Patterson said. “There’s a video of the galaxy. There’s a piece called ‘Mystical Childhood,’ where we’ve harnessed children with cerebral palsy to another person, ‘giving them legs.’ We stand and give them movement.” Performers from the ARCs of

Martin and St. Lucie counties will participate in the event, as will singers Lorrianna Colozzo and Gigi King and a fleet of dancers. Among the dancers will be An-thony Flores, a guest artist from Los Angeles, and Gen LaGratta’s

Tappers.“Gen is one of our main inspira-

tions,” Patterson said. “Her son, Chris will be tapping and playing an awesome ‘John Travolta.’ She is extremely supportive.” Patterson said that she has

struggled for several years to de-scribe what these performances mean. The answer came to her a few weeks ago. “We are working with people’s

souls and spirits,” she said. “We allow their spirits to shine. It’s ego-less. When you’re an audi-ence member, you can’t explain why you’re laughing and crying.

It’s life-changing for all of us. “My sister has been dancing with

one girl for 13 years. She’s an older woman with cerebral palsy. Her mother told my sister, ‘This is what she lives for. She watch-es the video all year.’ The joy of sharing the arts does wonderful things for this community.” Singer Lorrianna Colozzo said that watching those who cannot walk find movement was a special experience. “It was breathtaking,” she said.

“It was a really beautiful night. You have to bring tissues.”

Q- Why do my gums bleed when I brush or floss?A- Gum bleeding is a sign of gingivitis or more. The gums bleed when they are irritated from bacteria in the form of plaque, food debris or incorrect hygiene care that traumatizes the soft gums.Q- Why should I use a soft brush?A- Clean is clean. Brushing harder does not make your teeth more clean, but may risk abrading the enamel at the gum line or chase the gums away from abrasion. Soft but effective is the goal.

Port St. Lucie Business Women’s 23rd Annual Luncheon and Fashion Show was a sell-out red carpet affair ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Three

hundred glamorous women got dressed to the nines to attend the sold-out 23rd Annual Fash-ion Show and Luncheon, a “Red Carpet Affair” hosted by Port St. Lucie Business Women on April 20 at the Harbour Ridge Yacht & Country Club in Palm City. Lukas Klotzsche and Valorie

Pari of the Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Stuart got the party started displaying their tango tal-ents. Dee Jay Vince Pulcini of The Pulse played a variety of movie themes throughout the event. Silent auction items that

grabbed attention included a wine tasting for 10 and a “mon-ey tree” with leaves of gift cards. More than 100 items were auctioned, including designer handbags, gift baskets, artwork, jewelry galore and gift certificates

for spa services, rounds of golf, memberships, and carpet clean-ing. High heel shoes not only graced the well-heeled guests but served as tabletop decor as well that also were auctioned. Covered with glitter, polka dots, leopard spots, or bows, these wine hold-ers sparked friendly but intense bidding. More than $15,000 was raised,

which will support the Business Women’s Community Action Awards and provide scholarships for women attending Indian River State College. Recipients for 2013-2014 will be chosen later this year. Frannie Hutchinson won the

raffle for the television, donated by Perfect Drive Golf Villas. Krysti Oliver’s ticket was chosen for the Coach purse and wallet, donated by Gold Rush America. Devon Saia gained celebrity status when

Children’s theater returns to Sunrise by way of Missoula

Photo courtesy of the Sunrise TheatreThe Missoula Children’s Theatre returns to the Sunrise Theatre for four one-week summer camps, each featuring an original play. The camp featuring ‘Rapunzel’ will run from July 8-12.

FORT PIERCE — If Jim Caron’s car hadn’t broken down in Missoula, Mont., in the 1970s, there might be no Missoula Children’s Theatre. While he was waiting for car repairs,

Caron auditioned for a role in a local pro-duction of “Man of La Mancha.” He became friends with Don Collins, who was also in the show. Caron’s car was repaired, but he stayed in Missoula, and the duo organized a group of adults who put on plays for kids

in the local movie theater. They soon per-formed throughout the Mountain States. Eventually, they added kids into the pro-

ductions, but when bad weather prevented them from traveling with children to play the seven dwarves, they came up with the idea of casting local kids in the plays.Today, the kids are the stars of the Mis-

soula Children’s Theatre as it travels to all 50 states and Canada. Two professional actor/directors hold auditions and cast 50-60 local children in full-length original musical productions.

Missoula Children’s Theatre has been a staple of summer-time at the Sunrise Theatre, and it returns to Fort Pierce for four camps. Each is 4-½ days. On the fifth day, the campers put on an evening show, complete with cos-tumes and sets that travel with the troupe in their red truck. This year’s shows include “The

Wizard of Oz,” from June 10-14; “Rapunzel,” from July 8-12; “Snow White” from July 15-19 and “Pinocchio,” from Aug. 12-16. Steven Thomas and Grace Mc-Geoch are the actor/directors of “Rapunzel.” Mr. Thomas spoke by phone about the production. “I’ve been touring since 2006,”

he said. “They go to all the big auditions throughout the country and look for people with teaching experience as well as an inter-est in acting. I got called in for an interview. When they talked about going to military bases and working with military kids, that sold me right there. I grew up in a military family.” Thomas said that the two actor/

directors come into town with the red truck. On a Monday morning, the first day of the camp, they hold auditions and announce the cast. Everyone is in the cast, with the exception of four campers who are selected to be assistant directors and help with the light-

ing, sound and other backstage matters. “We start rehearsal on Monday

and rehearse four hours each day from Tuesday-Thursday,” Thomas said. “The plays are all original, written for Missoula Children’s Theatre. Early on, we break into small groups, but by Wednesday, everybody is together. Thursday is a rehearsal and Friday morn-ing, we get the costumes and have a dress rehearsal for the Friday night performance.” The red truck contains all the

sets, props and costumes, in-cluding a costume for “Frenchy,” the narrator, played by one of the adults. “We supply everything we need

except for the kids,” Thomas said. The group tours all year, work-

ing with school groups during the school year and theater, camps and military bases during the summer. On the bases, they often work with Boys & Girls Clubs. Thomas has noticed a difference. “On some of the bases, the kids

are more clearly raised to be mili-tary kids,” he said. “They say ‘Sir’ and ‘Ma’am.’ I get ‘Sirred’ a lot on base.” While the focus is on the play,

Thomas says the program has other goals.“We only have the week,” he

said. “The kids have an end goal.

By the end of the week, they’ve had a chance to succeed in only a week. They say, ‘What else can I accomplish?’ There’s a sense of success that can carry over to other parts of life.”The program is for all kids, not

just budding actors.“If they’ve never thought about

performing, that is perfectly fine,” Thomas said. “We’re looking for people who want to give it a shot. The rehearsal process is fun. The shows are comedic and you see some goofiness. It doesn’t have to feel like work, but we’re accom-plishing getting the shows taught

quickly. “Each actor/director brings a

different flair, but we have spe-cific methods. We know we need to use ‘an economy of language’ and figure out the quickest and clearest way to tell them what they need to know.” The Missoula Children’s Theatre

comes to the Sunrise Theatre, 117 S. Second St. Fort Pierce, for four sessions. The cost for each ses-sion is $100 per child. Students in grades 1-12 are encouraged to participate. To register, call (772) 461-4775.

all-on-Four/Teeth in a DayTM

Dr. Sohl is on the forefront of implant placement. He has a dental CAT scan unit on premises for computer guided implant placement protocols for Nobel Biocares All-on Four/Teeth in a DayTM procedures. All-on-Four/Teeth in a DayTM was developed to minimize the number of implants required to anchor a complete set of dentures. A full arch can be replaced with four implants in a single visit, as opposed to as many as eight implants and multiple office visits.
