“Your classical storage costs are high compared to that of the
overarching HCI price. I think you see material benefits from it being
converged. I’m not having to run FCOE or iSCSI across the storage
core, then worrying about targets etc., it’s already in there.”
-------------------------
“I think the footprint of heat for HCI is 1/10th of traditional servers.
Another thing is rack space. When they talk about cooling and other
electrical things, they don’t necessarily talk about real estate. You
can put 10 times the number of HCI environments in a datacenter
than you would do with traditional datacenter types.”
------------------------
“We still need to get additional HW & SW, so costs are higher in the
first couple of years. The idea is that as you are migrating more and
more into this set up, then you stop supporting some other systems,
decommission them and the costs will keep reducing in the future.”

HCI Impact to SLAs & Downtime
15
Yes90%
No / TBD10%
Are you better able to meet SLA requirements with hyperconverged systems?
“[Downtime] definitely has decreased. From a patching perspective it’s been offering us more rolling patches. So,
we’re not required to bring systems down in order to patch or do routine maintenance. We can maintain that
higher level of availability or uptime.”
-------------------------
“I’ve got a whole bunch of instances. If one goes down, the request goes to the next one and it doesn’t make any
difference. [There’s] less downtime and service disruption.”
-------------------------
“Yes, it [downtime] has decreased because with hyperconverged systems there are more tests that you can do
while still being online and we are fully utilizing those capabilities.”

Teams Influencing HCI Decision
16
Which of the teams had the most
influence on HCI purchase?
“We always have input form the C-level when we look at this kind of
stuff. We have to present what we want to do as far as the project is
concerned. So they [IT execs.] had some input when we presented the
concept to them.”
------------------------
“The CTO was probably the lead of the charge. The CIO got involved
for the final decision. The Chief Security Officer got involved after it
was technically deemed appropriate. The initial focus is to understand
the technology and the second piece is how it’s going to fit in our world
and with the other tools that we have.”
------------------------
“The CIO was included and definitely has some influence there. He
[CIO] wanted to make sure he had visibility to the direction we’re
headed in, in order to have that buy in initially, rather than just seeing
the price tag after everything has been vetted and possibly saying no!”
