Pentland Javelins, after all.

Dickie Prosser (plot 12A) has a well appointed shed and as much of an open door policy as his antique hinges will allow. His home brewing skills are improving weekly, and his stout is coming along nicely. Very nicely indeed. He has achieved, through an unconventional palette of ingredients, a true winter warmer, with an ABV of something between twelve and sixteen percent, depending upon the measurement device employed and the acuity of his senses at the time of measurement. Jolly good stuff in either event. He is, whilst considering the joy an allotment can offer, however, the first of my acquaintance to institute a no smoking policy, but that is entirely understandable under the circumstances and taking into account his recent brush with a flammable situation brought about by the merest moment's inattention: what good fortune it has proved to be that he has a standpipe adjacent. The sautéed marrow was surprisingly tasty, though, for those of you with culinary intent.

And now, forgive me, I must attend to an outbreak of thistles before it becomes unmanageable.

Strange that the powers that be have had the time to give the matter such in-depth consideration, along, I also saw whilst sauntering through the cemetery, with what grave adornment is allowed now;, although I do see the reason for not wanting old bits of plastic blowing about the remains of loved ones.

I think the point I was going to make was that there is a rhythm, a flow, a certain neglected glory to a shed which is in accord with the herbal abundance all about it. Nature does not sit well with the perpendicular style (aside from abhorring a vacuum) and I can think of nothing more pleasing than the sight of a robust collection of brambles contriving to save one's shed from complete collapse. Added insulation too, I daresay, for those chill days when one just has to get out of the house, for there is only so much of certain of one's relatives it is reasonable to be expected to tolerate, (well, all of them, actually) and somebody has to lift the

'Hello Pud-Swan'by Bryan Beggs

Naomi House Children’s Hospice in Hampshire, as reported last

month, has benefitted to the tune of £3000 from the newly published storybook for children by Andover author Bryan Beggs. ‘Hello Pud-Swan’ [a three-part set] is a story with a difference, which aims to capture the imagination of readers aged from 7 – 10 years, in an INTerACTIVe and eDuCATIONAl way. Topics of geographical, historical, scientific and cultural interest

are woven into the storyline, as are the 7, 8 and 9 times mathematical tables!

All information about these books and where they can be bought can be found on the books’ own website www.pud-swan.org and now the first 17 pages are available to read on google Books.Tel: 01264 365190

should be spent in enhancing the facilities already existing in enham for the rehabilitation of wounded soldiers.

In 1969 a veteran of that battle, a former major in the royal Signals, the rev’d. leslie Pettifer was appointed priest to the adjacent parish of Knights enham and it became his earnest desire to create a permanent memorial in enham Alamein village to his World War II comrades... the little church of St. george’s was the result. It is of modest proportions and appearance on the outside, but to enter it, is to enter into a shrine dedicated to a precise moment in our nation’s history. It is most tastefully furnished [the woodwork produced in the workshops of enham by the comrades of the fallen] and every item has a story to tell. All around on the walls and in the stained glass of the windows are the shield badges of the units that fought in the battle, and every year on the Sunday nearest to the date of the battle [23rd October] there is held a service and memorial parade. The church has limited opening hours so for details it is best to contact the Andover T o u r i s t I n f o r m a t i o n Office [01264-324320], who can provide a contact number. The village also possesses two sets of wrought iron gates, which used to frame the entrance to the Alamein Club in Cairo.

Brian Beggs

Of course when one thinks of egypt, perhaps what comes

immediately to mind are visions of the pyramids seemingly floating on an early morning desert mist, or the mighty Nile flowing serenely to the sea flecked with the dhows, their outstretched sails grasping for a gentle breeze. Alternatively, we might think of the great Suez Canal, opened in 1869... Did you know that today it is three times deeper than its original eight metres, and with its access channels has been extended from 102 miles to 120 miles in length? It was, of course the subject of the Suez Crisis of 1956 when for a very short while our country, with France and Israel went to war with the republic of egypt in a vain attempt to maintain our control of it.

However, it was during the Second World War [on 23rd October1942] that our eighth Army won the victory in egypt at el Alamein which was so crucial, and many can probably recall the words of Winston Churchill, who wrote ‘... it may almost be said before Alamein we never had a victory. After Alamein we never had a defeat.’ This is where the link to Hampshire is discovered, for just to the north of Andover is the village that had its name changed from enham to enham Alamein... why? Because in gratitude for their deliverance from the german armies the citizens of Cairo and the egyptian government sent £225,000 to our country, and it was decided that the money

ISSUe 33 MARCH www.stockbridgeforum.co.uk

This project is supported by Hampshire Archives and local Studies and

the Isle of Wight record Office. Community Archives Officer Bryony Hatton explains:

“living links aims to help community groups collect and embrace their local heritage. The project is now in its last few months as it comes to an end in March 2011. During the last three years living links has had contact with nearly two hundred groups across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. These include a wide variety of groups from the more traditional local history societies to yacht clubs and steam railways.

A large part of the project has involved encouraging groups unfamiliar with archives, such as youth groups, to become involved in their heritage through creative means; for example art, film, theatre and poetry. The project has also supported existing community heritage groups to develop their archives. For all groups the aim has been to inspire a better understanding of their community, and through this a greater sense of community identity and pride.

One of the central parts of the project is the Archive Ambassadors training which includes preservation techniques and cataloguing guidelines amongst other things. Through this training community group members can learn the skills required to build their own archive. There are now eighty-five

On many occasions I have shown around parents who reminisce about the school they remember and the changes, not least the new buildings over the years as the school has grown in size with up to 780 pupils now on roll. Did you attend Test Valley School? We are looking for the family who has had most family members attend over the fifty years to join us as VIPs for our special events coming up. If you think this could be your family please contact Miss Davies at school to tell us more.

As part of our celebrations to mark this year we have a number of events coming up. The first is a grand Challenge Quiz on Friday March 25th. Teams of up to eight can enter for only £12 a team. We look forward to welcoming as many as possible for what will be an enjoyable evening. On Saturday July 9th we are planning a big reunion evening and hope as many ex-members of staff, pupils and friends of the school will be able to join us. you can also go to our new Facebook page from our link on the school website to catch up with old friends and we will post more details here about our events.

We look forward to the next fifty years!

louisa HiscockHeadteacher

The school opened in April 1961 with less than 220 pupils arriving for that

first day. Mr Cavill, one of the founding members of staff in 1961, tells me that the school was due to open in the January but not all of the building work was completed on time. More pupils arrived for the Autumn Term in September.

We are enjoying finding out more about the school’s history and searching out photographs or other ‘evidence’ from our own archives. The school has been through a number of changes over the last fifty years, not least sharing its anniversary with the year the Beatles first played together!

I am proud to be the school’s fourth headteacher but previous pupils will no doubt remember Mr Nick Holtham, Mr elwin richards, Mr Peter Clarkson and Miss Wendy Morrish. The school has gone from strength to strength over the years with a strong commitment to ensuring our pupils enjoy coming to school and achieve success. yet as a small secondary school it is important to us that our staff and pupils feel they belong to a community where they are valued as individuals.

Many of our current pupils have parents, grandparents and other relatives who also attended our school as pupils.

The importance of preserving a community’s heritage as well as that of individuals and families should not be underestimated and, as a result of the work of living links, we hope this message will continue to be promoted and supported across Hampshire”

The group has 57 paid-up members and organises a program of monthly meetings, on the third Friday of each month at Wherwell Village Hall. Throughout 2010 they photographed as many village events, both large and small, as possible; for compilation into a permanent Scrapbook. Current projects include a ‘Bygones Calendar’, a ‘Then & Now’ album, profiles of village people and archival of village publications such as the Anthology and Parish Magazine. They are also building up a store of archive material, and have received nearly 40 separate contributions, mostly photographs, publications and a few oral interviews.

Here's a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are) 1. When you say 'room' or 'carpet' what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ish. But we don't quibble if the areas are a little larger - it's all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes us to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don't price into the job at these discount rates is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen tv's. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitably we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Are there any 'hidden' extra costs? The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay (VAT is included).

longsword dancing began hundreds of years ago, although it

is impossible to say exactly when. There are various theories about how it started, with some tracing the origins back to Scandinavian settlers in the fifteenth century, and others attributing the wielding of iron swords to a fertility rite. yet another theory is that out-of-work ploughmen would turn redundant ploughshares into long thin swords and put on the dances during the winter when income was scarce. There were always six dancers, who performed intricate dances by weaving in and out of each other whilst each holding the end of their neighbour’s sword. each dance climaxes with a ‘lock’ when the swords are woven together into a shape that supports itself and can be held up.

The best known lock resembles a six-pointed star or sun, and could hark back to midwinter performances when people were eagerly looking forward to springtime. The dances were accompanied by a musician on accordion or drum, and a ‘fool’ would go with them to pass a cap round.

We feel strongly that this ancient tradition should be kept alive, particularly as we are the only known group in the south east of england. Are you interested in a gentle workout whilst learning a traditional art form and having fun?

I’d try to remedy this by running some directing workshops. I’m a Drama teacher and have directed many productions, so hoped that my input would be useful. The response has been great and I’m particularly happy that we have directors and actors from three different groups. It’s about being involved, trying out new roles and developing new skills. We’re always looking for new members whether to act, be part of the technical team or direct. I’m hoping my budding directors will enjoy the process so much that they’ll be fighting each other to direct the next full production!’

The ticket for this cabaret style evening will include a glass of bubbly and cheese and biscuits. The audience are asked to bring their own wine and soft drinks, although tea and coffee will be sold at the interval.

Tickets are £7.50 and can be bought by calling Sarah on 01794 388788

23,High St,Wherwell,Hampshire,SP11 7JG

At the end of the Christmas holidays whilst sorting through Star II’s school bag, in amongst the debris of misplaced Christmas cards, ‘Fun Camp’ form, and a slightly mangled chocolate tree decoration, I found it:

the ‘Bridge Building Project’ homework sheet to be handed in on January 14th. use any medium you like, it cheerily suggested - painting, model, photograph... PowerPoint. My heart sank. Oh dear.

yes, yes, I know I should have been a proper Mother and utilized our many nature rambles over the yuletide holidays to take photos of all the local bridges, catalogue them chronologically, expound on their usage and then, as an aside, download numerous images of the ‘Danyang-Kunshan grand Bridge’ with accompanying time frame video of its construction. But alas, no.

No sooner had Stars I & II thrown their festering school bags into the cupboard at the end of term than they promptly contracted the major lurgi of the season. Thus they spent a week playing who’s the best at impersonating a boiled sweet (red, damp and slightly sticky), lying on the sofa with DVDs numerous, while I administered Calpol and paracetamol ad nauseum. The last thing they wanted was to watch repeats of ‘Mega-Structures’ on Sky or listen to me extolling the virtues of the golden gate when they had so little span, attention or otherwise, of their own.

And so it was one January weekend, with the words “Oh my god I’ve forgotten his bridge project,” suspended in the air, that the Husband and Star II cycled off to the local ford, where, fortunately, there are three fine examples of bridges: wooden, foot; river, brick arched; and road, modern concrete. excellent.

There then followed a quick trip into the local cathedral city, as not only had we run out of printer ink, but paper too. Then another hour was spent cajoling Star II into the ordeal of writing a few words about each bridge. eventually it was done.

'everyone’s making a model, Mum.''err, sorry?''Of their bridges, Freddie’s dad has made a scale model of Tower Bridge out of matches. It’s got a battery so it opens and shuts - that’s SO cool! And Poppy’s dad is one of those arch-i-tec things and he’s made one out of recycled materials that he says will never need painting.'

right, marvellous.

Mercifully I am the proud owner, thanks to the work in progress that is our new kitchen, of a cardboard mountain that currently sits in our conservatory. I came over all ‘Blue Peter’ and explained to Star II that we would be constructing an aerial view model of the ford encompassing the three bridges, ford, streams, road and surrounding water meadow!

“Out of cardboard?” Star II was unimpressed, announcing he’d help me later but now there were animal programmes on the telly. The combination of his look of mild incredulousness and the fact that it was to be handed in the following day furthered my resolve: I was on a mission to make a model to marvel at.

Without having resorted to the gin, as night fell, I’d finished.'What the hell is that meant to be then Sandra, love?'you know when you can feel your eyes narrow. 'It’s clearly the ford! look, that’s the footbridge with the stream under and that’s the brick bridge...''It’s the wrong bond love, the bricks are laid like...''Well ANyWAy, that’s the river going under and on through the field, here’s the road with the dual carriage way bridge, and I even put a car on it!''ummm, so what’s with the white stripes on the blue bit then?''That’s the sun glinting on the clear crystal water, obviously!''right….Have you actually been to the ford recently, love?'

I remained unabashed. reassured by the phrase ‘mixed media’ I carefully slid my cardboard, felt tip pen and overly abundant Sellotaped masterpiece into a Marks and Spencer bag for life – no Asda carrier for this baby, oh no!

Thursday 14th dawned. 'Can’t I just put this into my book bag Mum? Do I HAVe to carry it?' I was about to hyperventilate.'What!? No don’t, it will get squashed, it’s delicate!! Carry it carefully PleASe!'

At this point it occurred to me that this was My precious piece of homework; despite the fact that Star II had written a sentence about each bridge, he’d had no real input re the model, apart from asking, 'What is it?'

I concluded that I should have been courageous and inspired him to make the model, after all, this entire entire project was an opportunity to show off his artistic talents. Had I failed yet again? The model happily managed to have that home-spun childlike quality to it, more by fault than design, so I didn’t need to feel too ashamed. Or so I thought...

Having alighted from the car outside school, two observations became apparent: one, Star II is, much like his mother, too short for a ‘bag for life’, necessitating it being dragged along the ground, and two, my cardboard offering was woefully inadequate, for all around us huge bits of MDF were being hauled out of cars. Models of viaducts, suspension, cantilever, and road and rail bridges were carefully eased from boots and back seats by loving fathers.

I hurried Star II along, convincing him that he would be late. The last I saw, he was running across the playing field circling the bag for life around his head. Hey ho, such is life.

That night the bridge returned...in pieces and missing a car.

'good day love?' I nervously inquired.'yes, ok Mum.''um ... so….. did your teacher like the model?''yes, but she said it will be interesting to see what I can make on Bridge Building Day.''Bridge Building Day?''yes, next Wednesday! you are coming aren’t you? PleeASe.''Of course I will love.'

Suddenly I heard the voice of Mr Trussler, my art teacher in year 4, saying 'Could have tried harder...'

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Coat a nine inch deep pie plate with vegetable oil or cooking spray.

In a large bowl, mix together the butter and sugar until smooth. Add the egg yolks and beat until light and fluffy. Sift in the plain flour, baking powder and salt and stir until well blended.

Once blended mix in the vanilla and milk. In a separate bowl, whip the egg whites to stiff peaks using an electric mixer. Gently fold into the batter and pour the mixture into the prepared pie plate. Sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar and place in a preheated oven.

Bake for 25 minutes in the preheated oven, then reduce the temperature to 180°C. Continue to bake for another 40 to 50 minutes or until the centre is set. To see if your tart has set remove it from the oven and gently jiggle the pie. Serve hot or cold.

With the success of our genuine French restaurant, we have decided to offer a selection of home made French food, French hampers and imported

speciality French products from the best artisans in France. Furthermore, for those who like cooking, we are proposing a French cookery School.

'We offer you France on your doorstep at French prices'

• Our Pantry - French food chosen and prepared by French chefs. For the contentment of our patrons, we are opening a gourmet boutique. Our products have been selected from the cream of the best artisans in France, who are recognised by food experts as superior. In addition we have a small, but different and delicious range of frozen dishes made in our kitchen, by g.Marquis. We have carefully chosen and prepared our dishes according to the original recipes: no additives, just traditional cooking with herbs and spices like our grand mothers did, some essential ingredients are imported to giving the true flavour of French food. No more tasteless bogus cassoulet looking like baked beans and sausage! We will offer French 'vin de pays' of great taste and value to complement your shopping. All at French prices!

• An exciting range of French hamper and picnic baskets With the past four years' great success of our picnic hampers, to entice your appetite with exciting and delightful fare, we are proposing alternative and authentic French hampers which will tempt the most blasé. Our delicious produces have been enjoyed by centuries of French gourmets. These hampers are complemented by superb wines from the South West of France.

• French cookery courses by a French chef Finally, in Hampshire, you can learn how to prepare French food from the frog's mouth. Our cookery school is based on a maximum of 6/8 persons at any one time. It allows Mr Marquis to give personal attention to every student. All courses are hands on and are of duration of two and half hours. All food and utensils are supplied and the food cooked during the lesson will be eaten at the end of the course. experienced from a long practice, Mr Marquis has designed the lessons for ladies, gentlemen and teenagers and will be in charge of the school.

• Our online boutique For our clients who unfortunately do not live in the neighbourhood, we are selling all our products online.

Our success is based on uncompromising French tradition and attitude toward food, only French people know from childhood.

New Business of the Year Award 2010Highly Commended - river Dental Clinic.

A new crown in 90 minutes?Although our patients tell us they like visiting the practice we appreciate they are busy people. they would wish to spend as little time as possible in the dental chair.

With this in mind we have installed the latest

CEREC technology. this is a revolutionary

innovation that enables us to design, fabricate

a crown, inlay or veneer in a single visit. When

you arrive, a digital camera is used to take

an image of a prepared tooth, instead of an

impression or mould. you then relax with a

coffee and a magazine whilst we design the restoration. the whole

procedure that would normally take at least two weeks, if not more,

just takes around an hour and a half.

Remember our success is your smile, For more information on

CEREC please call us or drop in.
