A New Year of Opportunity

If you are like most Stone Canyon residents, you intentionally chose to build or buy a home in this neighborhood because of its beauty, amenities, schools, convenience and reputation for being a place people love to live and raise their families. You may have either built or bought in “the new” Stone Canyon 14 years ago – or possibly just moved in. In either case, it is important that we work to preserve and update the amenities that brought us all to this neighborhood and ensure that Stone Canyon continues to be one of the top rated places to live in Williamson County.

In 2014, the Home Owners Association will be making some changes to the way in which we operate and the amenities you receive as a member of the community. These changes are going to be based on prioritizing what matters most to you – the community.

On November 1, we will be launching the first annual “Neighborhood Satisfaction” survey. The link will be available on our website (http://www.stonecanyonoa.org/home.asp) and we will do email blasts and put information out on the Stone Canyon Facebook site. This survey will remain open for the month of November to allow everyone the chance to vote. If you are among the first 200 residents to complete the survey, you have the chance to win a $35 gift card*. *Ten residents will be chosen at random from these first 200 residents.

Take the time to fill out this survey – your voice will be heard and you might also win a little cash before the holidays!

Fall Gardening TipsBy Charles Evans, Director of Operations, ECOSystems Landscape Services

• Know the light and watering requirements of all your plants, and the best time of the year to plant them.

• October/November is the time to plant Bluebonnets and wildflowers

• Planting trees and hardy shrubs should start now. With our cooler/wetter weather, plants have 8 months to put down roots to prepare for our hot summer of 2014

• If you plant fruit and nut trees, refer to the County Agricultural Agent to make sure you plant the variety that is correct for your area. Avoid the big box store selections without checking.

• If you had a tough summer with your vegetable gardening, start your fall garden now and grow the crops we can’t grow in the summer. Broccoli, collards, brussels sprouts, spinach, kale, swiss chard, etc.

• Enrich the soil. Our soils here are heavy clay with a high PH. The cure to poor soil is to amend with at least 40% organic matter.

• After planting, cover all bare areas with mulch; that is, partly composted material, shredded leaves, shredded tree trimmings, or shredded cedar. This will keep the ground cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, and will break down to form organic matter in the soil. Do not worry about this material robbing nitrogen from the soil. It will not do this as long as you keep it on the surface and do not till it into the soil. This mulch will save you much work watering and removing weeds.

• Plant during or after a rain in the fall for best survival rate. Never pack down the soil when planting anything, and do not walk on the beds.

• Do not mix plants in a small bed that have different water and light requirement.

• Plan, plan, plan! Make your mistakes on paper, not in your yard. Study out what to do and how to do it before you act.

• If you still have not done your pre-emergent, do it now. Once the weeds germinate it is too late.

Shown: Citrus cranberry turkey roasted on a Kamado Joe.

Give Us the Bird.

Let’s talk turkey. Roasting a turkey in a Kamado Joe grill is just as easy as using your oven. The difference is that turkeys that come out of our grills are incredibly juicy with a mouth-watering charcoal flavor.

Here’s why. Ovens are made of metal and they’re very efficient at pulling the moisture from food. On the other hand, Kamado Joe grills have a thick ceramic shell that locks in the moisture and natural oils of the turkey and keeps it where it belongs–in the turkey.

Our grills also use 100% natural lump charcoal. It’s made from hardwoods like oak and it’s the only heat source that infuses true charcoal flavor.

We’ve made it easy for you. We posted our own grill-tested recipe with simple cooking instructions, so you can serve a turkey they’ll be thanking you for all year long.

We have many neighborhood events that provide a wonderful opportunity to get out and meet your fellow neighbors in Stone Canyon. Breakfast with Santa is one of those in which you can also help others.

Breakfast With Santa- Saturday, December, 14th starting at 9 am and ending at 11:30 am. Santa would love to see you! Choirs from Fern Bluff Elementary, Chisholm Trail Middle School and Round Rock High School will be performing at various times in the morning. All are welcome to come and hear the sounds of the season, even if you don’t have a wish list for Santa.

This event also serves as a way to give back to those less fortunate. We will be collecting items and gift card donations for Trinity Nursing home, the Baptist Children’s Home, Kids and their families in need attending Round Rock High School and Fern Bluff Elementary.

Gift Ideas: The residents of the nursing home are always in need of toiletries and socks. Gift Cards are always welcome, and as you know cards from places like Wal-Mart, HEB and Target allow for the purchase of food as well as other needed items

If you would like to volunteer to help during Breakfast With Santa or host a Gift Card Party to collect donations for our adopted families, please contact Laura Kouns at 512-733-1659 or [email protected].

Thank you in advance for your generous support of our Adopt-a-Family Program.

Holiday Lights And Decorations Contest

By: Cathy Soukup and Amelia Dansby

Each year, members of our Yard of the Month Committee work hard to select the best holiday lights in our lovely neighborhood. Instead of choosing 1st/2nd/3rd place winners and 5 Honorable Mention for overall recognition like we do during the spring and summer, we will chose a winner and a runner up from four categories, just like last winter.

Individual Categories: 1. Most Elegant- Will cover the very pretty and beautiful homes. 2. Family Friendly- Will cover fun eye candy for youngsters and

young-at-heart (i.e. Inflatable globes and figures; Santa/Elves/Toys/Flashing Lights yard ornaments; accompanying music)

3. Brightest Lights- We are looking for something that is over the top; with all the LED bulbs out there, this category seems appropriately festive.

4. Best Street- Will cover cul-de-sacs, coves and stretches of streets where multiple adjoining homes show obvious, defined coordination among all the neighbors; but no missing links in the chain, please.

We’ll have special Stone Canyon Holiday Lights yard signs, identifying a winner and runner up in each category. For the “Best Street” category,

Stone Canyonone sign will be placed at entry to winning cove, cul-de-sac, or beginning of selected stretch of homes identifying category.

In order to allow reasonable amount of time for residents to put all lights and decorations in place, our nominating and final voting dates are below. If you want to be considered, be sure to have lights lit, action figures and music going and ready by 6:00 pm each evening.

• Nominating dates: Saturday December 14th through Monday December 16th (after 6pm)

• Final Voting: Tuesday December 17th through Friday December 20th (after 6pm)

• Yard Signs will be delivered on Saturday December 21st.Any questions? Feel free to contact Amelia Dansby (amdansby@gmail.

26 Tips for Preventing TheftTheft Statistics Show You Can Reduce Your Chances by Following These 26 Tips

Do you know how to prevent burglars from taking away your Christmas cheer? Every year during the holiday season among the Christmas shopping, holiday parties, church services, and family outings there are thieves watching and waiting for their chance to take advantage of you and steal your belongings.

Theft statistics rise during the holidays according to law enforcement officials. State Farm Insurance claims that most thieves look for easy targets. By knowing this ahead of time, you can take steps to reduce your chances of becoming a victim of theft this year. Whether you are shopping at the mall or planning a 5 day ski trip to Tahoe, these 26 tips can help you prevent theft from happening to you.

1. Car doors should always be locked, even when parked at home2. Do not leave any valuable items in your car especially overnight3. When unloading items from your car, don't leave your vehicle

open while you take items in, leaving other items in the car for thieves to take

4. Park in a well lit area when shopping5. When you are out shopping, hide valuables, even small ones

6. Do not let thieves know what you buy- do not put the boxes they came in out on the curb in plain sight with the trash and recycle. Break the boxes into small pieces and place in the bottom of the can

7. Don't let mail or papers stack up--stop mail and newspaper delivery while you are away

8. Let a neighbor know you will be gone and that there will be no one coming and going from your house

9. Ask a neighbor or friend to remove door hangers, business cards, or other advertising someone may leave on your doorstep

10. Ask your neighbor to bring your garbage cans in if you leave on trash collection day

11. Put lights on a timing system so the house does not stay dark.12. Never open the door to strangers13. Keep home doors and windows locked14. Consider installing a home security system including a home

security alarm15. Don't leave a hidden key outside16. Don't give keys to service people17. Avoid bragging to others about valuables you own18. Install exterior lighting19. Record serial numbers and photograph household valuables20. Always park your cars in the garage with the garage door shut

to prevent anyone from observing your occupancy patterns21. Place a radio or TV on a timer and the volume up load enough

to be heard from outside22. Lower the sound of your telephone ringer (or answering

machines) so that it can't be heard from outside23. Never leave notes on your door indicating you are gone24. Have your home phone forward calls to your cell. Thieves will

sometimes call your home to see if you are there25. Do not invite strangers into your home, this includes uninvited

carpet cleaning sales companies and cheery young magazine sales people who may be there to case the house

26. Be a good neighbor- watch your neighborhood and notify the police and our Facebook page if you see something suspicious

Home burglaries and theft of your valuables can happen to the most prudent. Preventing theft can be just a matter of taking a few extra steps. Don't let thieves do their holiday shopping from your belongings by following these tips on reducing the odds that you will become a victim of theft this year.

Neighborly Concerns• Cars or trailers parked in the streets - It is optimum that we don’t park vehicles on the street, for safety as well as aesthetic reasons; but if we must let’s be courteous to our neighbors and park our vehicle in front of our own home and not theirs. • Puppy Poop – Pick up after our animals, we don’t want our kids stepping in it. • Trash Cans – Bring in garbage cans after trash pick-up. Storage of trash cans should be in a location that is not visible to the street or to our side neighbors.• Yard and Fence Maintenance – Please don’t allow your home to be the eyesore of the street. Time to pull weeds, freshen up the yard and fence for fall!
