Shall We Call It Hawaii or Paradise?

Our virtual week in Hawaii brought about great conversations of past vacations to these beautiful islands, recollecting luaus with grass skirts and hula dancing, beautiful sunrises and sunsets, interesting volcanoes, waterfalls and sandy beaches. Thanks for sharing!Enjoy some interesting facts we learned this week:

• Hawaii is the only state that grows coffee commercially. We had our own Kona Coffee taste testing. We sniffed and sipped and discussed each cup with words like bright, bitter, nutty and mellow. It turns out that we all had the same favorite!

• Snakes are outlawed in Hawaii due to their negative effect on the island’s delicate ecosystem. The only snakes allowed on the island are the ones in zoos.

• Only seven of Hawaii’s 132 islands are inhabited by people: Hawaii, Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Oahu, Kauai, and Nihau.

Aloha!“Aloha!” It’s literal meaning is ‘love.’ It expresses wishes for a positive and respectful life, and means both hello and good-bye.Hawaii had a big year when they celebrated the 50th year of statehood for the 50th state. A homegrown boy became President. As if that weren’t enough, the local cuisine got a national tip-of-the-hat when Obama flew celebrated Honolulu chef Alan Wong to Washington to whip up a luau buffet on the White House Lawn for members of Congress. One of the most festive experiences to be had on a visit to the Hawaiian Islands is a luau — a Hawaiian feast featuring lively music and vibrant cultural performances from Hawaii and greater Polynesia. While our luau was not an authentic celebration, we certainly had a good time! The folks here at StoneRidge know how to party! We kicked off our spirited Luau with Polynesian entertainment, including the unique sounds of the ukulele. We enjoyed singing along to familiar tunes and doing the hula. Our leis, sunglasses and flowered hair pieces really put us in the mood to party!

Shall We Call It Hawaii or Paradise? (Continued)• Believe it or not, the winter sport of

skiing is possible on the slopes of Mauna Kea!

After we “swooshed” our way down the slopes, we enjoyed some delicious Hawaiian Hot Cocoa. The recipe included half and half, milk, sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, vanilla and coconut extract, and salt. We then topped it all off with whipped cream and toasted, shredded coconut. I can see you salivating now!You can’t take a trip to Hawaii and not enjoy some fresh pineapple. We learned about the success of the Dole Plantation in Honolulu. It was quite an interesting story which spurred us on to sip our Pineapple Smoothies. They were a big hit!Try it sometime: 1 1/2 c. pineapple juice, 1 banana, 1 1/2 c. frozen pineapple chunks, and 3/4 c. vanilla Greek yogurt (ours had cinnamon added).

Diane might be new to StoneRidge, but she is not new to delicious coffee!

Our entertainment continued as we enjoyed our own version of a Mai Tai, gave our best efforts at hula dancing and working the hula hoop, and having fun photo ops!

Welcome to Fiji!“Bula!” That is how the Fijians say hello. It’s literal meaning is “life,” and it implies wishes for continued good health. We learned that Fiji consists of 333 islands, 110 of which are inhabited. The waters are home to over 1,500 species of sea life and the average water temperature is a warm 78 degrees. In honor of the white sandy beaches of Fiji, we indulged our senses by building a sand castle. We took play sand, added a few ingredients and created the perfect blend to build an incredible creation. Our 150 pounds of sand allowed us to create quite the scene. We enjoyed the feel of the sand and packing it together to create mounds, towers and domes. We were really happy with our finished creation.Did you know that the Tom Hanks movie, “Castaway,” was filmed on the Fiijan island of Monuriki? Thanks to a volleyball, Tom Hank’s character survives. For our chair volleyball game, we decorated the balloon with a picture of Wilson, commemorating the movie. It provided a bit of extra fun for our game. We learned something interesting about the volleyball in the movie. While researching for the film, one of the screenwriters chose to deliberately strand himself for one week on an isolated beach in the Gulf of California, to force himself to search for water and food, and obtain his own shelter. During this time, a volleyball washed up on shore. This was the inspiration for the film’s inanimate companion. Very interesting, don’t you think?

Jean brightens our day with her smile and fun personality.

Our StoneRidge Sandcastle Village is almost complete!

Well done!

ST. PATRICK’S DAY FIRST DAY OF SPRING

Page 5: StoneRidge - March 2021

Newcomers’ CornerWelcome, Jenny Tripp!

Jenny comes to us from Greenville, the same area she grew up in. She has quite the fondness for the Pamlico River, which was her view from her front porch. She loved being with the students as she worked as a cashier at East Carolina University. She has two children: Her son graduated from UNC and her daughter from Meredith.Jenny, we look forward to getting to know you more. We are glad you are here!

Last, But Not Least, New Zealand!

Here are a few New Zealand facts we learned through discussion and documentaries:• There are three official languages: English, Maori,

and Sign Language.• Only 5% of New Zealand’s population is human, the

rest are animals.• In New Zealand, national parks and protected

lands make up about 1/3 of the country. We also enjoyed learning about the Sky Tower, a 1,076 icon of Auckland’s sky line for over 20 years. It’s an exciting hub of adrenaline activities, superb dining and breathtaking views. It has 1,267 steps, requiring 29 minutes to walk up. In 2009, the record was broken for the fastest run up to the top. Thomas Dold from Germany set an astounding record of 4 minutes 53 seconds! Here at StoneRidge, we had our own challenge: The men vs. the women in creating the Sky Tower out of popsicle sticks. It took all week and diligent attention to the details of the diagram provided, and a lot of glue. While both teams worked hard and did a great job, it was a win for the women! We also treated ourselves to some much needed R & R with a Mineral Hand Soak. The geothermal pools in New Zealand provide soothing waters and rich mud. Our ingredients included: Dead sea salt, pink Himalayan salt, coarse sea salt, Epsom salt and drops of essential oils of lavender, spearmint or lime. With the lights turned off, the candles in full swing along with peaceful music, our bodies were relaxed and our spirits were lifted.

Beautiful Jenny and beautiful view

Great start, Dori and Helen!

Team Henry and Robert making good progress

Well done!

Virginia and Pat, new friends, relaxing side by side

Welcome, Richard Herbert!

Richard was born in New York City, enjoyed 52 years of marriage and enjoys his two kids, five grandkids, and two great-grandkids. He was in the Marine Corp from 1953 to 1956, after which he was a founder of the NY Hospital Employee Credit Union, also establishing accounts with other major companies.Richard volunteered for the NYC Mission Society for 25 years, helping kids finish high school and providing weekend camping trips. While working with “A Better Chance,” Richard had the pleasure of helping Laura Coates go through the program, who now works for CNN. Richard enjoys fishing, hunting and playing pool. We are so happy you are part of our StoneRidge Family!Welcome, Pat Warren!

Pat was born in Kinston, in Lenore County. She did a bit of everything and had a good time: History teacher, social worker and special education. She loved working with kids because she learned to look at things from a different perspective. She was married just shy of 50 years, has one son, two perfect grandchildren, and a great daughter-in-law. She and her husband were very active in the community and had a good time together. Pat loves to play Bridge, looks forward to playing more, and looks forward to getting to know folks better.Welcome, Ed Wooten!

Ed was born in Rome, Alabama, was married for 61 years, has two daughters, seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. That’s a lot of names to remember, Ed! His 3 years and 8 months of service in the Air Force and volunteering for the Lion’s Club provided him with opportunities for growth and enrichment. Ed previously worked for Blue Cross, earning their version of the Hall of Fame in sales, and is still very busy working, as he owns his own insurance company.Welcome, Helene Kaley!

Helene was born in the Bronx but moved here from Boynton, Florida. She met her husband through her work in the jewelry business. When asked to make a delivery to a different side of town, she hesitantly agreed. Once there, the man receiving the delivery had a brother visiting. He ended up being the one! They met on March 3rd, got engaged on May 12th, and married on September 3rd. When you know, you know! Helene enjoys cooking, playing Mah Jongg, Canasta, and Bridge, which she learned at age 11. She loves her three children but her three grandchildren are the “apple of my eye.”

Richard is racking ‘em up!

Ed shares his new grandfather clock

and his love for being a grandfather.

Helene in her element

Pat has a winning hand and a

winning personality.
