About the Financial Counsellors’ Association of Western Australia

The Financial Counsellors’ Association of Western Australia Inc. (FCAWA) is a not-for-profit organisation representing 144 members located throughout Western Australia. FCAWA was established in 1985. The purpose and function of FCAWA is to be the voice of and forum for financial counsellors and to provide sector support for financial counselling agencies. FCAWA is widely recognised as an organisation committed to fair and just practice, dedicated to assisting consumers and supporting its members.

Financial counsellors provide free, confidential and independent service to those experiencing financial difficulties. Many people find themselves in financial difficulty as a result of unexpected events such as relationship breakdown, death in the family, illness – physical and mental and loss of employment. Clients are provided with information and options to empower them to make informed decisions about the direction to take when in financial difficulty.

Financial counsellors have been recognised by the Western Australia Consumer Protection Awards for their excellence in advancement, development and promotion of consumer protection in Western Australia.

 

FCAWA Annual Conference

The 2017 Annual Conference for FCAWA will be held at the Duxton Hotel in Perth from Monday 23rd

to Wednesday 25th October and an additional day, specifically for the rural and remote members, will be held Thursday 26th October. The conference theme is “Wave of Change – Oceans of Opportunities” and reflects the need for Financial Counselling to grasp upcoming opportunities to the sector. The conference provides a valuable opportunity to provide professional development to financial counsellors.

This conference allows for important ‘face-to-face’ training especially for regional and remote financial counsellors. It facilitates networking between a range of services which are not generally available to workers located in remote or regional areas. This ensures that all financial counsellors are equipped with current information, skills and contacts, allowing them to continue delivering quality service.  

The conference program is still in the process of development but it is anticipated sessions will cover: banking and finance, superannuation changes, utility and mortgage stress, ethical considerations, Indigenous issues, mental health, gambling, housing issues, family and domestic violence and

consumer rights. A call for abstracts is currently being circulated for consideration.
