Dinner at the pub

We sit at a table where we can watch the street in case Uncle

Oliver arrives.

It is raining hard now and there is a bad thunderstorm1, with

thunder and lightning2 in the sky.

Suzie and I order fish and chips, while our parents have roast

beef and cheese salad.

Uncle Oliver doesn’t show up3 and so dad asks the waiter

where Black Hawk Drive is. The man’s face goes from smiling

to very serious.

“Black Hawk Drive? You mean Conister House? Are you sure

you want to go there at this time of the night?”

“Well, my brother lives there. He moved in4 some time ago,”

is dad’s answer.

“Oh… did he?” says the waiter. “I thought nobody would ever

go5 and live there. The house was built6 in the XVIII century by

a woman, Lady Conister. It was also a hotel for a very short

time. But guests7 never liked it. There are stories, you know…”.

“Stories? What kind of stories?” asks mum. She looks worried.

“Sorry, madam… I haven’t got time,” answers the waiter

hastily8. “I must get back to work.” And he disappears9.

We are all silent for a moment. Then mum asks dad:

“Did the waiter mean10 that Oliver’s house is… haunted11,

George?”

Dad’s reaction is very nervous. “Oh, come on Annie! You’re

E P I S O D E 3

a clever12 woman. You know ghosts don’t exist!”

We eat our meal in silence and in the end dad says:

“Alright, folks13! Hurry up! Let’s get going!”

While our father is paying, mum asks a man in the pub the way

to Conister House.

“Ah, you mean that house…,” says the man reluctantly.

“Uhm… Drive along College Street, go past the churchyard14

and take the second street on the left… It’s Lake View Drive.

Go along that road for a couple of miles15 and there you are…

Be careful… Good luck!” he adds.

“Er… Thank you!” answers mum in a trembling voice16.
