It’s February already and we have entered into the Chinese year of the wood horse.

pparently this is a most auspicious year, so say Chinese astrologers, bringing us out of a five year negative cycle. Everyone does seem to

be happier and more optimistic so I am expecting a spectacular year. Many of the small businesses in Dural & Round Corner and

surrounds close over the Christmas and New Year period, some of them not reopening until the end of January. For most of them it is the only chance to take a break and the mass migration out of the area for the summer holidays by many residents makes it the best time. I returned from leave on the 13th January and quite a few businesses were still closed and Round Corner was like a ghost town!

I was house sitting for a month so I did not escape out of Sydney until the 3rd January and headed to Byron via Dunbogan. My parents live there and it is on the Camden Haven River on the headland opposite North Haven. Dunbogan was spectacular and I saw the dolphins frolicking in the morning at the top of the river. Byron was its’ usual muggy, tourist haven but still pretty self, brimming with backpackers from all over the world.

Well and truly back at work now and trying to get some stock. Real Estate is booming and we now have a sellers market!

A Real Winner! The recent Century21 Prime Property Dural’s car promotion was a real winner.

rincipal Gaye Wheatley said “we wanted to thank our clients for

entrusting the sale of their property with us, so we decided the put them in a draw to win a car which was drawn at our annual Customer Christmas party.

The ecstatic winner was Tracie Mitchell who sold her home with Century21 Dural. Tracie said she was still in shock from the win on the Monday after the draw and was delighted with the fabulous price she received for her home. To win the car was awesome!

Peter Dawson from Peter Dawson’s Solicitors did the honours and drew out the lucky winner. He engaged the crowd with an entertaining speech before drawing the car. He said everyone was a winner because they sold with Century21 Prime Property Dural.

“This promotion was so popular that we will do it bigger and better next year!” said Gaye.

If you’re anywhere near Lorien Novalis School on a Tuesday night, you will hear some glorious singing.

t’s not a bunch of heavenly angels coming to take you up, it’s just ‘Stay Tuned’ - the community choir that started last year in Dural and already

boasts 40 members. The group meets every Tuesday under the direction of the amazing Suze

Pratten, who has just moved to the area after working for years at Coffs Harbour Conservatorium. Suze has taken a group of 40 people (who barely knew each other) and turned them into a singing powerhouse in less than a year. “I love this job, and this group of people - we have so much fun and make some great music every week as well” says Suze.

The highlight last year was performing Bohemian Rhapsody with over 100 other singers. New members are very welcome, especially men! The choir is open to anyone who loves singing, there’s no audition.“Just wanted to thank you for Sunday’s concert. It was fabulous! I also want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to sing in a choir. I had never thought of joining a choir until I read an article about your choirs, earlier this year. It inspired me and I am now part of Stay Tuned. I haven’t looked back. It gives me lots of joy. “ Ingrid (member of Stay Tuned)

The choir meets on Tuesday nights at Lorien Novalis School.

LOCAL LEGEND

Tiffany’s Top Marks Leading an outstanding set of HSC results was Dux of the School and 2013 School Captain, Tiffany Wu with an ATAR of 99.85.

iffany started at Hills Grammar in Year 2 and attributes her success to the support and friendship surrounding her. “I’ve accumulated so many

priceless memories and really enjoyed all my years at Hills. I’m extremely proud to have been School Captain but also I feel so blessed to have the most amazing people around me – my family, friends and teachers.”

Tiffany managed to fulfil her leadership role, take part in a myriad of co-curricular activities and achieve this outstanding result. “I think I was able to balance it all because I truly loved everything that I did; my role as School Captain, all my subjects and the co-curricular activities. From that joy came the unlimited motivation to work hard.”

Tiffany received scholarship offers from UNSW, UWS and the University of Sydney. “I was also offered a position in the Co-op Program from the Business School at UNSW but instead, I’ve decided to accept a USBS Scholarship with Distinction for All Round Excellence.”Her current plans are to study Commerce/Law at the University of Sydney.

Yixuan Ni shared with Tiffany, the distinction of appearing in the All Round Merit list for achieving 90% or more on 10 units of study. The media has been dominated over the summer months by numerous stories of violence on our streets.

he O’Farrell Government stepped up and has implemented measures which, we all hope, will

reduce the level of violence in our great city. However, one of the things that has irked me about

the measures introduced has been the cries from people complaining about how these measures, which include a 1:30am lockout and 3am last drinks, infringes on their right to have a good time.

Putting aside the question of why these people NEED alcohol to have a good time, these people claim that consuming alcohol is a right, and that any infringement on that is somehow a crime of epic proportions.

While I don’t often quote from the American Revolution given my Monarchist allegiances, one of the things the founding fathers of the United States did get right is their definition of what exactly is a right.

We, as human beings, have the inalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

It strikes me as odd that those who cry foul of how alcohol bans are an infringement on their right to happiness make no mention of how we have had two young men from Sydney’s North West, having barely begun their lives, stripped of their right to life.

So if not being able to consume alcohol at King’s Cross at 3am causes inconvenience for you, I take comfort in the knowledge that our next generation will live to see the next day as a result of your discomfort!

Business waste takes many forms and can occur across every part of a business.

aste is usually considered as unwanted or useless materials, but wastage in business can also be seen

in inefficiencies in processes or practices.

Waste, in whatever form it appears, unless managed well, can erode business profits, negatively affect productivity and efficiency, and detract from business sustainability.

Simple workplace practices that address inefficiencies and wastage revolve around:> reducing waste> the reuse of materials> recycling.

These three practices are easy to implement and go a long way to reducing costs and the need for storage, whilst boosting productivity and efficiencies.

Regular monitoring of processes and practices and preventive maintenance can ensure waste is avoided before it occurs.

The value added to the Australian economy by Sydney Hills businesses has risen by $500 million in the last 12 months according to economic modelling figures released by Compelling Economics.

ocal businesses added an estimated $7.6 billion to the Australian economy in 2013, up on the $7.1 billion

added in 2012. The data released also underlines the growing status of Norwest Business Park as the capital of professional, technical and scientific services in Sydney’s West.

This data tells us that we employ more lawyers, accountants, architects, engineers, researchers, IT

professionals and advertising agents than any other western Sydney employment centre and shows that big and small businesses are increasingly seeing

the value of setting up shop in Norwest. It also shows the enormous contribution our businesses make to the Australian economy, adding $7.6 billion worth of value in 2013. That’s a big jump on the $7.1 billion worth of value added in 2012.”

Our Economic Development and Marketing Team will continue to work with local businesses and business groups to help the Sydney Hills economy grow.

Hornsby Shire Council supports the Independent Review Panel’s opinion that local government has been bogged down in lengthy and emotional discussions about amalgamations for far too long.

t Hornsby Council we want to move the debate on to the real issues that stymie local government,

The Panel has presented many options that require us to seriously look at the way local government operates now and be prepared to make changes so we can be viable in the future. The Panel’s Report contains lots of good recommendations that we need to think about and discuss rationally with our residents and ratepayers.

At the same time I welcome the comments by the Mayor of The Hills Shire about amalgamations and look forward to genuine negotiations with our neighbours over the next few months. But we have to remember that Council amalgamations are only one part of the total report and it seems that people are only looking at one piece of the jigsaw”.

Mayor Welcomes Year of the Horse with Hills Lunar Festival.

ills Shire Mayor Dr Michelle Byrne has welcomed the Year of the Horse with the first ever Hills Lunar Festival

held at Don Moore Reserve, North Rocks on Saturday. More than 2000 residents and visitors attended the

event and Mayor Byrne said it was a great reflection of our multicultural society.

“It was fantastic to see so many residents and visitors of different cultural backgrounds celebrating this wonderful event that is particularly special to our Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese and South Asian communities,” Mayor Byrne said. “This is an event the community can build on in the future. When people come to Australia they do so for a better life. But becoming Australian doesn’t mean you’re expected to forget the traditions of your homeland or ancestors. We want to celebrate those traditions and that’s what we did on Saturday night.”

“Once again I’d like to wish everyone a very happy and prosperous Year of the Horse.”

One punch assault laws pass Parliament.

mandatory minimum eight year jail sentence for so-called one punch assaults will be in force from this

month after Parliament recently passed new laws to combat drug and alcohol-fuelled violence.

Parliament has also passed legislation to establish the new Sydney CBD Entertainment Precinct which will be subject to 1.30am lockouts, 3am last drinks and other special licence conditions.

Other elements of the NSW Government’s package passed include:> New state-wide 10pm closing time for all liquor outlets;> Increasing the maximum sentence to 25 years for the illegal supply and possession of steroids;> Increased fines including for offensive language, offensive behaviour and continued drunk and disorderly behaviour;> New Police powers to conduct drug and alcohol testing;> Extending the existing liquor licence freezes which apply in the Kings Cross and Oxford Street / Darlinghurst precincts across the new Sydney CBD Entertainment Precinct;> Removing voluntary intoxication as a mitigating factor in sentencing; and> Paving the way for the introduction of annual liquor licence fee for all licensed premises in NSW.

The NSW Government has heard the community’s call for action. We are committed to addressing the continued drug and alcohol-fuelled attacks and the increase in violence used in these attacks.

Households and businesses can now look forward to a further easing in power costs from this July, as the NSW Government’s reforms to the energy sector take hold.

he NSW Government has reined in power prices through network reform, achieving significant

efficiencies which have brought the three network businesses under a joint board and CEO. After experiencing power price increases of more than 60 per cent over five years under the previous government, it is expected that 1 July 2014 will be the first time since the turn of the century that households will experience two successive annual reductions in power costs.

Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy and Essential Energy have submitted prudent investment proposals that will keep their networks safe and reliable, while keeping their share of customer electricity bill increases to CPI or below. The proposals lock in the gains that were made last year over the full five-year regulation period, keeping electricity bill rises below CPI. Since the electricity network accounts for about half of household electricity bills, the submissions will have a major downward impact on the electricity bills of households and business.

Under the previous government, electricity prices rose by more than 60 per cent over five years, including by almost 20 per cent in 2009-10.

If Federal Labor would allow Tony Abbott to abolish the carbon tax, price relief for NSW households in 2014-15 would be around 10 per cent.

nO FeAR HeReThere are always mixed emotions on the first day of school for both parents and kindergarten children; parents seeing their little ones so grown up in uniform and the children meeting new friends.

Kindy’s first day at Hills Grammar is a little different as over half the intake have attended the Early Childhood Education Centre for the previous one or two years and all

children participated in a five week transition program at the end of last year. Mel Mihno, Head of Early Childhood explains, “The transition program gives them the opportunity to meet their teachers and friends which makes them feel safe and secure when starting school.

Parents attend seminars on pertinent topics to help prepare their child for school.”

OUt WitH tHe OLD, in WitH tHe neWTimes are changing at Middle Dural Public School. In 2014 new kindies, new school captains and new P & C office bearers were welcomed , and also a new principal, with the retirement this year of Mr Gary Barnes. The end of 2013 was punctuated by a number of fun events, including a farewell pizza night for the graduating Year 6 students, a disco and, of course, presentation night. Presentation night was a bittersweet occasion for families whose youngest children have now completed primary school. We said goodbye to

outgoing school captains Vanessa and Julian, and welcomed newly elected captains Caleb and Madeleine. Special mention must be made of the dux of the school, Ewan, who thoroughly deserves his place in Galston High School’s Gifted and Talented Program this year.

There has also been some reshuffling in the P & C, with Gemma Silvia taking up the reins as President and we are all looking forward to working under her leadership this year.

CReAM OF tHe CROPOakhill College held a Dedication Day Mass recently to recognise the outstanding HSC results of its former year 12 students. Former students returned to the Castle Hill for the event. The top achieving student, Mark Moussad, received an ATAR of 99.50. He was closely followed by Dominic Lukaszewicz with an ATAR of 99.25 and Daniel Kwarcinski with an ATAR of 99.10. Ten students received an ATAR greater than 97 and 18 were above 95. Other significant student results: John Fitzpatrick placed second in Italian continuers and Sabrina Delgado received a placing in earth and environmental science.

Both Mark and John were listed on the distinguished achievers list, having received Band 6 results in all of their subjects.

The largest, snowiest nation on Earth now has a winter playground to rival the Alps.

hile the city of Sochi is a landscape of green rolling hills, the Caucasus mountains are a terrain of

majestic alpine spires and magnificent birch forests. As many as 35 new ski lifts have been built in the ski resorts dotted around Krasnaya Polyana, all of them swift and modern and often audacious in the way they head directly up near-vertical slopes. Amid this landscape, about halfway up the mountain at Rosa Khutor, styled like a 19th century German spa town, is the athletes’ village directly adjacent to Extreme Park, where snowboarding and freestyle skiing events will be conducted. No such facility has ever been constructed in such a grand setting. Many of the courses funnel down into one huge amphitheatre for spectators - a design feature which should make for a fantastic atmosphere.

Australian moguls skier Taylah O’Neill was so taken with the athletes’ village that she described it as like a scene out of The Wizard of Oz.

“It kind of reminded me of the yellow brick road because you just kept following the road up and up and it kept taking you to more places.”

It’s incredibly beautiful. To stand there on a windless blue Russian winter day is to stand in one of the most beautiful landscapes on Earth.

On a warm summers day there is nothing more refreshing than a cold beer. In Australian we are blessed with a large variety of mass produced and boutique lagers and ales.

ne lager that does it for me and is readily available is Sapporo Premium Beer: a perfectly balanced golden

lager brewed with the Japanese attention to detail. The slow cool fermentation balances delicate hops and esters with a full malt character. The authentic brewing techniques and quality ingredients used have produced a crisp and refreshing lager beer.

1876 was the year the town of Sapporo, then a just a small frontier settlement in northern Japan, became home to what is now Japan’s oldest brewery. Located in the shadows of rugged snow capped Sapporo mountains, it was here that legendary Japanese brewer, Seibei Nakagawa, considered by many to be the pioneer of European style brewing in Japan, found what he considered to be the purest ingredients for the crafting of his signature brew.

Today the Nakagawa legacy lives on, with beer lovers around the world enjoying the authentically crafted brew he created over 130 years ago.

Physical inactivity is a reality that busy working professionals face every day.

hat can you do to increase your physical activity during the work day? Start with walking! Below are

4 tips on how to stay fit at work.1. Walk the block. Whether you’re grabbing a cup of

coffee or taking a walk during lunch, physical activity loosens up your body and helps our minds think clearer, making it easier for us to come up with creative solutions. Even small bouts of physical activity can help you reach the recommended goal of 150 minutes of physical activity a week.

2. Stretch at your desk. Try shrugging your shoulders, do neck rolls by looking down and rolling your head in a circular motion to the left then right, and loosen hands with air circles

3. Have a walking meeting. If you are meeting with 2 or 3 people, make the meeting a walking meeting and go for a stroll while you chat.

4. Stand up during calls. If you’re on the phone a lot during the day, try standing or walking while talking.

Commit to increase daily physical activity over 4 weeks. Activities can range from walking, cycling, running or swimming.

Little Orphan Annie is hitting the Riverside Theatre stage in one of the world’s best-loved musicals.

ith equal measures of pluck and positivity, Annie charms everyone’s hearts, despite a next-to-nothing

start in 1930’s New York City. She is determined to find her parents, who abandoned her on the doorstep of a New York City Orphanage, run by the cruel, embittered Miss Hannigan, played by Amanda Muggleton (Prisoner, Hello Dolly, Shirley Valentine).

Annie escapes to the wondrous and magical world of NYC where she meets billionaire Oliver Warbucks, his personal secretary Grace Farrell, and a lovable mutt named Sandy. Musical theatre star Rodney Dobson (Wicked, Miss Saigon, The Full Monty) will be playing the charismatic and sophisticated New York ‘zillionaire’ Oliver ‘Daddy’ Warbucks. Song and dance man, Christopher Horsey (Hot Shoe Shuffle, Bootmen, Singin’ in The Rain) will play the charismatic conman Rooster, in an exclusive engagement only at Riverside.

Boasting a classic Broadway score with hit song after hit song including Tomorrow, ANNIE is a spectacular production that will delight audiences of all ages.

Performances including matinees, staged until 22 February. For more information Ph: 8839 3399.

After the dizzy euphoria was Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’s tour of Australia last year, you would think the marathon music man might match yet not excel that triumph on his return.

he Boss and his band mates, however, clearly do not care for benchmarks. The bar does not exist in the

world of the master song craftsman and his supremely intuitive players. Every concert, they transcend what has gone before and take the audience to the stars and beyond.

Opening his second tour of Australia in under a year in Perth, a city which has never been graced by his presence, would appear a very smart move on behalf of a man who surely has played every gig possible on the planet. But it wasn’t just Western Australians who rocked out to the Boss; the crowd was generously peppered by those who had travelled west to see him open his Australian tour.

Although his latest record was well represented, Springsteen drew extensively from his back catalogue, with songs like Dancing in the Dark, Born to Run, and Hungry Heart, which included a mind blowing crowd surf by the 64 year old rocker.

Beg or borrow a ticket to see Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band in Australia this month. You really will regret it if you don’t.

Fencing is featured to create privacy and ensure our property is contained from the outside.

ome fencing is implemented to be soundproof, especially if you live on a busy street. While the materials for fencing

may vary, the design remains the same; to keep intruders out.Aside from stone, wooden fencing is the most popular

and the longest used material for privacy. Wooden fencing is the most popular and the longest used material for privacy. Wood is the simplest material to construct with and is the most convenient material to custom design height, angles and add decorative purposes.

Brushwood fences are a great product to use as it adds a natural look and is neutral in colouring. They are termite resistant and can last up to 30 years or more.

Timber picket fences can be made as intricate or as simple as you require so don’t be too quick to surpass the option.

Merbau is new fencing and decking material and is particularly suitable for privacy screens as it is very versatile and compliments a variety of different infrastructure materials.

Although more expensive and labour intensive; stone, brick and concrete fencing also offer their advantages. These materials are the most aesthetically appealing options and add great value to your home and overall property. They are also much more efficient in blocking out noise and more durable from weather damage then that of wooden fences.

So if you are renovating or designing a new home, first discuss your budget, decide what materials and colourings your overall property is going to entail and finally, determine the overall purpose your fencing is to serve.

Many people moan over having to maintain and keep their pool clean but with the right gear and a little regular effort it doesn’t need to take hours.

good base will always make the building solid and the same goes for your pool. Having the right

equipment is the most important first step. Checking all the filtration gear at the end of winter

to make sure that it is in good working order will make your job over summer much easier. Get leaking pumps fixed as soon as you notice to make sure a bigger problem, such as failed bearings do not occur. Filters should have a chemical clean at least every couple of years to make sure that they are in good working order. Salt chlorinators, even self cleaning ones, need to be cleaned manually on a regular basis. Standard chlorinators must be cleaned a minimum of every six weeks and self cleaners at least once per year. Make sure that the system is running the correct amount of time to filter and chlorinate the water. Minimum six hours in winter and depending on your chlorinator anywhere up to 10 or more hours per day during hot summer spells.

The second major item to check regularly is the chemical balance of your pool water as an improperly balanced pool can make the task of keeping them clear almost impossible. Most pool shops offer a free water testing service and recommend that the water is tested every 4 weeks over the summer period.

Once the two major parts of the system are in good condition a little time every week to remove leaves and debris will get your pool in tip top shape.

If you study all the fine sports lawns - tennis, and bowls for instance - you will find that top dressing of the turf is an essential maintenance operation.

t encourages new basal growth of the grass plants - giving a thicker sward of grass. Top Dressing is also

a good way to ‘level out’ the bumps and hollows in an uneven lawn.

To top dress a lawn means to add a layer of loam, sand and peat to the surface of your lawn. Top dressing is beneficial in such a way that, over a period of time, the quality of the soil is vastly improved.

Before you actually spread the soil, make sure the grass is actively growing. A good idea is fertilize the lawn a couple of weeks before topdressing; this will help the grass push through the soil quickly. Also, mow the lawn the day before you do the job. Long grass takes more soil to cover properly.

At Langland’s Landscape Supplies we have a range of soil and garden mixes and mulches, plus all the advice you need to prepare your lawn for top dressing.
