Turning impossible dreams into exciting realities.
The Ultimate High Wind Zone/Storm and Cyclone-resistant Glass. Ultra light weight, specially designed for large double glazed or single glazed windows.
StormShield®, Glasshape’s all new ultra robust cyclone
resistant and storm glass is a fully certified Grade A
Laminated Safety Glass. StormShield® is designed (by use
of a specially formulated polyacrylic laminate) to resist
penetration from flying debris, and excessive wind speeds
that are present during cyclones. Its ultra-high grade
laminate is designed to allow the glass to expand and
contract up to five times its normal rate before breaking
and once broken remains weathertight without tearing
or breaking the window envelope, thus maintaining
watertightness during and after a storm.
MULTI-LAYERED CYCLONE RESISTANT GLASS - BY GLASSHAPE
Storm Shield®
7.88mm StormShield® has recently been proven to be 30%
stronger than existing 13.88mm cyclone
glass made by other manufacturers.
Also, a world-leading cyclone testing station has rated
7.88mm StormShield® at 5.75kPa SLS Design Pressure
StormShield® benefits at a glance:• StormShield® Can be used in cyclone-prone areas without the need of storm shutters,
thus giving excellent clear vision • Full protection from all types of weather • Will
withstand wind gusts in excess of 511km/h (12.04kPa) when tested to AS4040.2. (10mm
StormShield®) • Excellent noise reduction • Fading protection • High security • Available in all
types of high performance glass and tints to enhance performance characteristics • Tested and
approved to: AS/NZS 2208:1996, AS/NZS 1170.2:2002, AS/4040.3:1992, AS4040.2:1992 • Grade A
Safety Glass for Human Impact NZ4223 and AS1288 • Available in cut to size or stock sheets
Technical Data:Cyclone Resistance
StormShield® has been tested by a fully accredited third
party cyclone testing station and has exceeded the test
described in AS/NZS1170.2:2002, Clause 5.3.2. This test
involves a 4kg piece of timber 100mm x 50mm cross-
section projected at 15m/s at any angle onto the glass.
StormShield® resisted the impact without any penetration.
Wind Resistance
The thinnest panel in the StormShield® range (7.88mm
thick) has been cyclic tested in accordance with AS4040.3
and has a rating of 5.75kpa! Panel size tested was 1800 x
700mm in a steel frame with 19mm edge cover. There were
no adhesives or glues used. This equates to 350 km/h wind
velocity. The 10mm StormShield® panel has a Strength
Limit State Design wind capacity of 6.74kPa! (Approx 381
km/h wind velocity).
Although the chart on the following page can be used for
calculating glass size and StormShield® thicknesses, this is
only a guide from test results and Glasshape recommends
using Wind Design Engineers to help with specific design to
building wind load capacities for individual projects.
This graph should also be read in conjunction with NZS4223
and AS1288 wind loading charts.
Range
StormShield® can be manufactured to incorporate other
high performance coated glass such as Evergreen,
Eclipse, Stopsol and Sunergy to boost the performance
characteristics. Speciality makeups of StormShield®
including tints are recommended to have a Thermal Safety
Assessment on the application.
Glazing
The glazing frame that StormShield® is glazed into is just as
important as the glass itself. A weak frame will dramatically
affect the performance of StormShield®.
For extra strength, aluminium clad steel frames or
aluminium frames with steel inserts are recommended
with a minimum edge cover of 19mm for engineered extra
strength. Glass must be fully glazed on all four sides.
Glazing adhesives are not essential but if used, they must
be a non-acidic cure, non-solvent based silicones that do
not attack Polyacrylic laminates. Glasshape recommends
the use of Dow Corning 995 as a structural sealant.
Where to use:• Windows and door openings in cyclone risk areas
and high wind zones
• Buildings that need to remain habitable
immediately after a storm
• Hotels and Resorts in coastal regions
• Government and communication buildings
• Hospitals
• Households and offices
• Any large window that calls up heavy, thick glass
under the NZS4223: Part 4:2000 as StormShield®
has extremely high wind zone ratings,
while being very thin and light weight
• Ideal in large double glazed units as StormShield®
will dramatically reduce weight and thickness
