We place 1,300 children a year on the path to high school graduation by first getting them ready for kindergarten.

9

Jeremiah was very shy and hadn’t spent much time around other children before starting at McMillan Early Learning Center in the toddler program. After a couple weeks adjusting, he began to blossom. The warm, nurturing environment, small class size and individual attention he received from teachers instilled a love of

learning in him. Jeremiah is now excelling in kindergarten and earning high marks in all areas on his latest progress report. “Jeremiah is social, polite and finds learning fun! The staff has set a wonderful foundation for him.”

– Gwendolyn, Jeremiah’s grandmother

We treat the whole person - mind and body - by providing 13,000 individuals access to mental and physical healthcare.

Before joining our Feel Better Fast class, Kelly’s anxiety was so severe it often kept her from leaving the house by herself. Today, Kelly practices ways of taking control of her mental and physical health by utilizing Action Plans and goal-setting worksheets. Since starting the class fourteen months ago,

she has lost 40 pounds, learned how to manage money, grocery shop and cook, and now holds a part-time job. “I feel much better about myself. I have self-confidence, and I am excited about becoming totally independent by this time next year.”

- Kelly

We partner with over 200 companies in Northeast Ohio to foster jobs and long-term careers, securing jobs for more than 275 people annually. El

José’s story…José was out of work and walked into El Barrio at Gordon Square looking for a new opportunity. He enrolled in the Spanish General Job Readiness program and secured a part-time job after graduating. While still working morning shifts, José joined our hospitality program and continued to study English in the afternoons. He earned his

hospitality certifications and began encouraging other clients to participate in the program. José was promoted to full time and is now qualified for a wide range of job openings. “El Barrio helped me with my language abilities that opened doors to many other opportunities.”

Kathleen’s story…Kathleen began smoking her junior year of high school. Her brother was a heavy smoker, and she knew she didn’t want to go down that road. As a senior, she started attending RapArt’s Not on Tobacco program held during her health class at Glenville High School that teaches the dangers of tobacco, drug and

alcohol use. After learning more of the hard facts and gaining a better understanding of the risks, Kathleen quit smoking for good and began sharing what she learned with her brother with hopes he would quit too. “I’m going to the Navy after I graduate, and I know I’ll never smoke again.”

Etoya’s story…Etoya came to Community Corner a few years ago with her ailing mother for food assistance and clothing in the resale shop. When her mother passed, Etoya secured a job, but for a very low wage. Our staff referred her to El Barrio for resume assistance, and she set a goal for herself to become a State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA). With the help

of Community Corner staff, she passed the test and now no longer needs assistance with food. Etoya continues to receive moral support from our staff and is celebrating achieving her goal. “Now I can depend on myself rather than community resources.”
