connection with the world around

them, yet were helpless to

understand the origin of the stars . . .

the history of the earth . . . or the

secrets of the sea . . . told stories.

Early cave paintings tell us that we

had a need to communicate as soon

as we could make sounds . . . before

we found language. We need stories.
