it does what I need without asking. I hate feeling without it when I need it.”

Our phone lets us connect with people whenever, wherever we choose—to be always on. We’ve gotten so used to this frequency and immediacy of connections that it’s changed the way we communicate.

How and why has our experience of ‘always on’ changed the way we communicate?

And what is technology’s role in helping us to manage and mediate our experience of connectedness?

Our ability to move within and between the inner and outer circles of connections has come to define our experience of connectedness.

APPENDIX

Page 75: Storytelling quantitative and qualitative research

QUESTION FRAMING

Page 76: Storytelling quantitative and qualitative research

Our investigation looks specifically at the in-between moments of life to explore the ways in which we mediate the truly important information from the mundane important information—in an effort to better understand technology’s role in helping us manage our experience of connectedness.

original hunt statement, as of feb 13: in-between moments

Hypotheses

Different in-between moments breed different in-between behaviors. During a lull in discussion, we

might quickly check email but nothing else; while trapped in a cab, we might check email, facebook,

twitter, etc. The context and control we feel over these situations matter.

--

There are times we want to hyper-manage the amount of information we receive; we decide what’s

truly important and try to sift out the mundane important. What’s truly important changes throughout

the day and is different for different people.

--

The management of truly important from mundane important

can be a stressful process; it might lead to coping mechanisms. (Coping mechanisms could be tech-

enabled or self-enabled.)

If you could use your phone right now, what would you use it for? How’s your day going? What’s on your mind at the moment? How do you feel not using your phone? If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you be? If you could use your phone right now, what would you use it for? What’s something that made you smile today? What’s been tough today without your phone? Tell us about something you learned today. How has your day been different without your phone?Have you asked a friend (or someone else) for help instead of asking your phone? If so, tell us about it. Does today’s limited phone use feel how you expected? Why or why not? If you could use your phone right now, what would you use it for? Did you ‘prepare’ in any way for today’s limited phone use? If so, tell us about it. --I cheated and used my phone! This is what I did and why: (repeated question)
