Our investigation looks specifically at the in-between moments of life to explore the ways in which we mediate the truly important information from the mundane important information—in an effort to better understand technology’s role in helping us manage our experience of connectedness.

Hypotheses

Different in-between moments breed different in-between behaviors. During a lull in discussion, we

might quickly check email but nothing else; while trapped in a cab, we might check email, facebook,

twitter, etc. The context and control we feel over these situations matter.

There are times we want to hyper-manage the amount of information we receive; we decide what’s

truly important and try to sift out the mundane important. What’s truly important changes throughout

the day and is different for different people.

can be a stressful process; it might lead to coping mechanisms. (Coping mechanisms could be tech-

enabled or self-enabled.)
