‘Outstanding Progress for All’

Home Bulletin 3rd July 2020

Dear parents and carers Yesterday, the Government published its guidance to schools for reopening in September and additional guidance for parents and carers. I met again with my senior team last night to work through the implications of the guidance, which is divided into these five sections: Section 1: Public health advice to minimise coronavirus (COVID-19) risks Section 2: School operations Section 3: Curriculum, behaviour and pastoral support Section 4: Assessment and accountability Section 5: Contingency planning for outbreaks There is a lot of detail in the 36 pages, but here are some of the points we have started to address: Curriculum Schools are expected to deliver the ‘full curriculum’. Substantial modification may be needed at the start of the year so ‘teaching time should be

prioritised to address significant gaps in pupils’ knowledge with the aim of returning to the school’s normal curriculum content by no later than summer term 2021.’

‘Remote education may need to be an essential component in the delivery of the school curriculum for some pupils, alongside classroom teaching, or in the case of a local lockdown.’

Movement We are asked to keep children in ‘class or year group sized ‘bubbles’ and encourage older children

to keep their distance from each other and staff where possible’. It is likely, therefore, that year groups will be based together in separate parts of the school. This will minimise contact with other years and reduce movement around the school. We will not be scheduling assemblies for the time being.

Teachers and other staff will be able to ‘operate across different classes and year groups in order to facilitate the delivery of the school timetable’.

Attendance Attendance will be mandatory. Schools are expected to ‘work with families to secure full attendance

from the start of the new academic year’.

Inspections

Ofsted’s routine inspections won’t resume until January 2021.

We are in a very strong position to address all of the above. The school has been open to a small number of students since the lockdown started and we are now into the second week of wider reopening to Year 10 and 12 students. Our hygiene, health and safety measures are well-embedded and understood by students and staff. Our existing risk assessments are very thorough. We do have, however, a huge challenge ahead of us. To emphasise this point, I am sharing the thoughts of two of the country’s leading Headteacher representatives . Paul Whiteman (general secretary of the NAHT) said, ‘… no-one should underestimate the scale of the challenge school leaders will now face in making these plans work in practice, especially in secondary schools.’ Geoff Barton (leader of ASCL) said, ‘The logistics of keeping apart many different ‘bubbles’ of children in a full school, including whole-year groups comprising hundreds of pupils, is mind boggling.’ Despite this, we will rebuild our school community and ensure that students can return safely to Stowupland in September to resume their learning together. My best wishes to you all for the week ahead. Peter Whear Headteacher

Congratulations!

On behalf of Mr and Mrs Holden, we are delighted to announce the safe (albeit late) arrival of their

daughter on 2 July 2020. Mother and baby doing amazingly well!

Mr Holden will be taking two weeks’ paternity leave but will return to school duties from 20 July. Mrs

Rudling and senior leaders will continue to support students in Mr Holden’s absence.

Praise Certificates

Congratulations to the following students who have been awarded certificates in recognition of their

high quality commitment, engagement and completion of remote learning:

Isabella North-Fields (7KP); Dylan Stretch (7RTR); Lexi Brundell (8GE); Megan Meadows (8CJ); Ross

Clarke (9KC); Emma Healy (9CP); Rosie Ager (10JF) and Alexander Crawford (10MB)

Apologies to Thomas Glanville who received a certificate on 8 June but was not recognised in the

Bedrock Learning Here at Stowupland we have been committed to helping students improve their vocabulary and comprehension skills. The Bedrock Learning programme enables students to complete online lessons to develop these skills. During lockdown, every student in Key Stage 3 was asked to complete 1 or 2 lessons per week alongside their English schoolwork, if possible.

I have been extremely impressed with the commitment of many of our students and would like to take the opportunity to recognise and share their fantastic achievements. Between 22 March and 27 June, students across KS3 have completed an astonishing 6,639 online Bedrock lessons!

Congratulations to the top five students across the entire key stage and within each year group:

Across KS3 Ezmai Elmer (9KF) - 83 Kieron Forsdyke (9SB) - 76 Brooke Davis (8MP) - 75 Megan Leeder (8CJ) - 75 Liam Waters (8SZ) - 72 Year 8 Brooke Davis (8MP) - 75 Megan Leeder (8CJ) - 75 Liam Waters (8SZ) - 72 Isabelle Bates (8CJ) - 71 Charley Bridges (8WCM) - 65 Miss K Curtis Assistant Subject Leader, English and Media Studies

Click and Collect School Library Service To support our students through the summer the school Library is offering a 'click and collect' service. The library catalogue will be available to all students. They will be able to search and reserve books on the Reading Cloud website and will also be able to access reading lists, write book reviews and see at a glance when new books are added. Once a student has reserved a book it will be safely selected and stored in a named plastic bag where it will remain for 72hrs. It will then be available for collection from the main Reception. Students returning books should place them in one of the plastic boxes in the front lobby. Collection and pick-up arrangements during the school closure will be confirmed at a later date. Students will be able to reserve up to three books at one time but will need to return them prior to requesting any more. Further details of student log in and passwords will be shortly. Please encourage your child(ren) to make the most of this service and do not hesitate to contact Mrs Burns via [email protected] if you have any questions.

Information and Updates

It is vitally important for our students to have access to read-ing a wide range of texts; this has been particularly difficult during lockdown. Books are a wonderful portal into other worlds and cultures and can boost wellbeing. Reading also leads to empathy, open mindedness, curiosity and so much more.
