PAINT PROTECTIONSTAGE 1 a preseal formulation which penetrates into themolecules of the paintwork preparing it for final sealant withStage 2.
STAGE 2 permanently bonds to the Stage 1 creating aprotective coating on the paintwork like a second skin whichresists attack and contamination from pollutants and roadgrime.
*CONSERVER formulated from Stage 1 & 2, Conserverassists in maintaining the GardX protection. It should beapplied monthly as a wash additive.
The GardX paint system permanently etches a layer ofprotective sealant into the core of your car’ s paintwork. It hasbeen tested in some of the world’ s harshest environments. It shields against the effects of the suns UV rays, acid rain, seasalt and provides a high gloss finish which retains it’ sappearance wash after wash.
* With regular maintenance you may never need to polish yourcar again.
STAIN GUARD A ‘ state of the art’ formulation which coats each individualfibre with an invisible barrier that protects against liquid spills, dirt, grease and oil. Liquids simply ‘ bead up’ and can beremoved by wiping off with a clean cloth or byvacuuming away. After application your cars interior shouldretain its original “ like new” appearance.

In today’ s harsh environment the paintwork on the modern carhas to put up with a bombardment of external forces such as acidrain, road salt, detergent, tree sap, industrial fallout and thedreaded bird droppings! Add to this the effect of the sunspowerful UV rays and all of this can play havoc with your car’ spaintwork.
Due to environmental demands manufacturers now have to usewater based paints, which whilst being environmentally safe andfriendly are far more prone to fading and oxidisation. A weeklywash or run through the car wash cannot hope to keep your carin showroom condition.
And the problem with modern wax polishes is they simply do notlast, every time you wash your car with detergent you wash awaya layer of protection.
However with the GardX Protection system you can benefit froman 8 year warranty protecting your car against almost anyharmful element that it’ s likely to come up against and helpretain that sparkling just like new look.
GLASS GUARDCreates a far safer driving environment by coating thewindscreen with a formulation which repels rain and causes itto bead and aerodynamically run off. Your area of visiondramatically improves by keeping glass free of rain, snow, frost, salt, dirt, bugs and grit. Suitable for all glass surfaces.
MIST GUARDEnhances the visibility through your windscreen no morewindscreens coated with morning condensation. Developedby the Ophthalmic industry, Mist Guard helps prevent mist ormoisture forming on the inside of the windscreen creating amuch safer driving environment.

Chasers(for Brendan Cleary)
The morning after the concert partyand I catch him pouring whisky into his tea. He’s talking poetry and women –the ones he’s lost to horses and drink. And because he reminds me I tell him about my ex –how when things got badhe’d come back from the bookiesso flustered you’d think he’d been chasinga horse by the name of ‘Love’s Tail’around the track. He pours another Talisker’s, I sip my gin – think aboutthe years it takes to get out -the split breath to fall in.

Colour is the latest weapon in the advertisers’ arsenal. We’re relentlesslybombarded by advertisers who use colour as part of their corporateidentity. Think orange, think of a company. I guess you’re now thinkingmobile phones. What a good job those marketeers have done. Colourreally is the ‘shock and awe’ of the marketing world.
The use of colour has changed irrevocably. It’s not just the advertisingworld that has changed. The whole world has changed. Children playedin black and white. Anyone remember plain white chalk? Playing at beinga painter with a set of watercolours was a magical experience. Today youhit the button, wait for boot up and you’re in full colour, 3D, alternativereality complete with surround sound. No imagination required. Instantgratification for an instant world.
The world of black and white requires you to think imaginatively, if only tofigure out how it would look in the ‘real’ world of colour. There is amystery, ambiguity and uncertainty in the unreal world of black and white.Take Film Noir where night scenes and dark long shadows are creativedevices. The tension that black and white creates forces you to ask morequestions than you would normally. You’re required to think, a dangerousthing to be doing in this day and age. The unrestrained use of colourensures that you don’t think too hard. It’s as if you’re having yourimagination manipulated or worse still, switched off. To quote Mr Weller“The public wants what the public gets”. Never a truer word said in the 21stCentury.
The beauty of black and white lies in this innate ambiguity. In the world ofNoir et Blanc you are required to resolve those ambiguities. Visually youneed to ask the questions, fill in the gaps. Use your imagination. Thearticles are written to make you stop and think. Hopefully you’ll stop andthink. If you don’t you should send a letter and say why.
More importantly everyone will have a different opinion. This is the key tothe world without colour. To stimulate imagination, provoke opinion andget people talking. I think we’d all agree a world with more talking wouldbe a better place. Then maybe we could avoid the use of ‘shock andawe’ forever.
Noir et Blanc asks - no - demands you to participate. If you have an ideaand want to make a contribution please get in touch.

NeB Wear
Fasten your seatbelts and keep your arms and legs to yourselves – we’re now entering the NeBula.
The NeBula is Noir Et Blanc’s unique media network. It’s made up of nine individual Components: from magazines and radio shows to
exhibitions and courses; we’ve got a little bit of everything for you to try. We’re really big on Inclusivity, so every part of the NeBula is
oh-so-interactive. We want you to help us shape our new universe, so dive in and join us – the black-and-white water’s lovely.
Sounds exciting, doesn’t it? So what’re you waiting for? Read on to learn more…
This is where it all began – NeB Mag was the first thing that was
created when we took a white bit and a black bit and bashed
them together really hard. Without the chain reaction that the
magazine started, the NeBula would never have blossomed into existence.
So, what’s it all about? Well, it’s a sexy little magazine filled to the brim with fresh
Arts and Lifestyle features. It’s got a little bit of everything you’ve ever dreamed of
in it. There’s a delicious buffet of tantalising burlesque, toe-tapping local music,
mysterious characters and all the food-for-thought you can eat!
For the first time ever, you can listen to your radio
in black-and-white! That’s right; it’s the voice of
the NeBula. Imagine letting your ears sink into a
lovely warm bath full of really interesting, amusing
water. It’s just like that, but without the bath and
without the water. Alright, so maybe that wasn’t
the best description, but the point remains the
same – NeB Air is definitely worth tuning in to. It’s
an hour-long radio show packed with interviews,
musings and banter. All that, and there’re tunes
as well. We’ve got a pair of fantastic people
called Tom and Johnny to host the show. We’re
sure you’ll all get on like a house on fire.
Ever recommended a band/exhibi-
tion/show/place/restaurant/person
to a friend? That’s exactly what this
little chunk of the NeBula does.
Whenever we hear about some-
thing we like the sound of, we’ll let
you know when and where it is…
we love to see people trying new
things and chances are we’ll see
you there!
This is the very heart of the Nebula; it’s how we keep everyone in the loop, how we or-
ganise everything and, most importantly, how you can talk to us! The official Noir et Blanc
website has just about everything the internet can offer (apart from naughty pictures) –
we’ve laid on forums, galleries, shops, exclusive online content, NeB Team blogs and a
whole host of other goodies for you. It’s your personal portal into the Noir et Blanc universe,
so set your coordinates to www.nebweb.co.uk and start exploring!
Our Space Project is very eyes-only, top secret, hush-
hush, so absolutely don’t let any world superpowers
hear about it, okay? NeB Space isn’t actually anything
to do with rockets (sadly), it’s a currently undisclosed lo-
cation in Southsea. We’ll keep you posted…
Sometimes we get ideas stuck in our heads or bees caught beneath our bonnets. NeB
Work is what happens when we do. It’s a collection of creative events devised by the
NeB Team and inspired by the world around us. It might be an exhibition of photographs
generated by the Credit Crunch, or a social-networking event brought on by occurrences
in parts unknown, or anything else we dream up. As you’ve probably guessed, it’s a
bubbling vat of preparations at the moment, with an enormous WATCH THIS SPACE
sticker stuck on the side.
Not quite cool school, but the next best thing. We’ve prepareda series of courses and experiences for you all to have a tasteof. If you’ve ever wanted to try something new, here’s yourbig chance; we’ll have all sorts on offer. Register online andkeep your eye on your inbox for the first syllabus!
Bored with your dreary, colourful wardrobe? Help is nearly here! We’ve got a team ofdesigners assisted by enchanted mice working night and day in a secret location toproduce the first line of Noir et Blanc clothing. We’re not going to tell you anything aboutit yet, you’ll just have to wait and see!
See something you like the look of? No, we’re not trying to pick you up (yet), we’re trying to fob
NeB Stuff off on you. There’s a section of NeB Web that lets you purchase all of your favourite Noir
et Blanc artwork, not to mention a whole range of merchandise that we’re adding to all the time
(NeB Brillo Pads are in the pipeline, please remain calm).
So, that’s the NeBula. Welcome.
P.S. We know there are a lot of NeB Words. Feel free to make up some of your own, answers on a postcard to [email protected] – prizes probable. 31 3 2

There is something charming about my sadness. As I stareinto the world, I lose my gaze. My eyes blur and nothing isin focus. The only thing that I can focus on are myfeelings. I see a child take a handful of stones. He is nowthrowing them at the car parked outside. He walks off andthinks that no-one has seen him. I did. I didn't move.
Feelings are magnified when they hurt. For me, when I'm welland happy, pain is but a moving arrow. It doesn't touch me.Happily thrusted into the air where it can travel freely, nothing in its way. In that time, everything is silent, all is well. The wind whistles and life sails on by. La la la!
The unfortunate course for the arrow this time is myself. Itspears me. The corners of my mouth soften. They don't curlupwards as they usually do. My eyes dampen and my lustfor life stifles. I find it more difficult to move. I becomeparalysed, my limbs heavy, my enthusiasm dismissed. Ispend the day putting up Christmas Trees without anyexcitement or enthusiasm. I watch Spinal Tap and it doesn'tmake me laugh.
This is one blip. It does not mean that I have regressed intothe old pattern of reinforcing negative behaviour. I must sleepnow, rest is the best cure for washing the slate clean.Tomorrow will be a new day so, I say "I give you today, Isurrender. Here take it. Have it. Today is over. I won't let yousteal my day again. Not tomorrow. Tomorrow is my turn tolive."
And as my imagination runs away with myself, I know thatmy heart will heal. For now, the tears will fall but they arealready dry - you have killed me too many times for there tobe life left in them.I'm going to save this arrow. The bloodon it is mine.
Thank you for making me hurt. There must be something outthere that I need to learn about you and learn about myself.I'm obviously taking my time, but I will get there.
This isn't me, this is your poisoned arrow.www.myspace.com/littlefishmusic

I’ll always remember the first time I met the Scuttlebutt. It wasvery late and I was on my way home from a party. It started torain, so I waited under a tree. There was another man shelteringthere too, he was wearing a long coat and puffing away on abig cigar.
We waited together in silence for a while until, suddenly, hestarted speaking. He didn’t look at me, he might not even haveknown I was there; he was just talking to the night air. I don’tthink I said a word; I just listened while he painted the mostunusual pictures with his words. He had the most unusual way ofspeaking; it was almost like hearing a train of thought go pastin the night, with a great cloud of hazy recollection and snatchesof memory trailing behind it.
It was hard to understand what he was telling me. The way hespoke made it difficult to focus on what he was saying; therewere no pauses, no logical processions. He told me aboutfriends he’d made, strangers he’d met, lovers, enemies,near-death experiences, half-remembered nightmares, hopesand disappointments. He was just pouring his life out into thedamp night air. As implausible as it all sounded, I didn’t doubt aword of it
It seemed as though he’d always been a sort of drifter, thoughwhether or not that was by choice, I couldn’t say. He spoke offleeting romances in far-away cities, audiences with exotic royaltyand clashes with ruthless criminals. I was spellbound.
For a while, he told me, he’d worked as a doorman at theroughest bar in the worst part of whichever city he was in at thetime. He seemed to have enjoyed the work, until one night aman drove his car through the front door in a drunken rage after
being thrown out. The other doorman was killed outright. TheScuttlebutt told me that he sang at the man’s funeral and thentalked about something else.
He told me about a man he’d stayed with once, who lived in anold observatory. He said the man’s name was Maat, and hewould spend hundreds of hours at night crafting the mostbeautifully intricate, dazzlingly splendid clockwork insects, just tohand out to street children. He said that the man was just tryingto give them little bits of magic to hold on to, when the worldseemed like a very cold place.
There was a lady he talked about a little, called Elizabeth. I thinkthey had been lovers, from the way he spoke about her. Theredidn’t seem to be anything exceptional about the woman, butfrom the way he described her, she sounded like the mostwonderful person in the world. Maybe that’s true of everyone?I think it might be.
And so it went on; I stood listening and he stood talking and therain fell down around us. After nearly an hour, the shower finallystopped and without so much as a nod, he stopped talking andsloped off into the night. A full moon had come out from behindthe clouds, making the raindrops look like beads of molten silver.
That was the first time I met the Scuttlebutt. I never quite knowwhen I’ll see him, but it’s always in the middle of the night, andthere’s always a full moon. And he doesn’t ever run out ofstories. I’ve never seen his face clearly; he could be anyone. Iknow I’m not the only one he reveals himself to - I keep hearingthat question being whispered in bars and murmured in thestreets: Who is the Scuttlebutt?
I’ve come to learn that there’s a little piece of the Scuttlebutt in all of us. Life is so wonderfully bizarre, so fullof outrageous incidents and accidents; you just can’t help but laugh sometimes. So many unusual, hystericalthings happen to us everyday, don’t they? I’m sure you’ve thought of a dozen tales of your own whilstreading this, haven’t you, dear reader?
Whisper your amusingly true stories into the ear of the Scuttlebutt……
There’s a question whispering across the city, like a leaf on the wind:Who is the Scuttlebutt?

Profile TechnologyHow much do you really need?
Husband and wife team, Luke and Jayne – directorsof computer support company RAdmin arepassionate about technology and it shows.Enthusiastic enough to spark the interest of the mostcommitted Luddite, we asked them to talk us throughthe IT essentials of the average small business.
“The technology needs for every business are different,” says Luke, “Butthere are core components that are applicable, whatever you do. We’revery Microsoft oriented in the solutions we provide. We use Windowsserver 2003 Small Business, which allows a standard PC to be thecentre for storage and security and manages up to 75 users. That’s thestandard product we install, but you first need to consider the hardware,or what PC to buy.”
“For a business with more than one person, a small networkmight be useful, perhaps with a server, which is a dedicatedPC running special software that manages your email, printerand faxes and even an intranet with shared calendars or acall logging system.”
Jayne and Luke are clear about the importance of two issues:Security and Backup.
“Too many people forget about these and find themselves withserious problems. Ensure your wireless connections aresecured, your firewall is set, you have antivirus and antispyware installed and up to date. Also, back up once a day oronce a week to a removable medium like a CD.”
Jayne and Luke firmly agree that technology solutions shouldnot be expensive. Increasingly, webbased applications suchas Google Docs and Apple Mobile Me allow businesses toutilise desktop functions online and at no cost, such as wordprocessing, and can even allow multiple users to editdocuments online in real time.
“A small business can easily spend a lot of money ontechnology, but it doesn’t have to. A basic PC with a CD/DVDrewriter, without Microsoft Office but with some of the
cutdown packages, can set you back about £300 with a smallprinter included. A standard broadband package will cost youaround £20 – 25 each month. A basic website with a fewpages of fixed content (i.e. without online shopping etc) withlinked email addresses can be achieved for in the region of£100. A box of rewritable CD’s for your backups costs about£20. There is some great free AntiVirus and AntiSpywaresoftware available and securing a wireless network for one ortwo PC’s might cost around £30.”
Technology develops at an alarming rate, and the range ofdevices available to small businesses is overwhelming. Unlessyou know exactly what you are looking for, Jayne and Luke’sstrongest recommendation is to seek impartial advice from acomputer support specialist and not from the high street.
“RAdmin will give impartial advice for free,” smiles Luke, “Butthe longlasting value it will have for your business is absolutelypriceless!”

Business Profile: Bombay Bay
What a beautiful location; the sounds of the sea nearby, the sailing boats framing your viewsout the Bombay Bay’s windows as you sit to eat what can only be described as the highestquality Indian cuisine.
It may seem strange to place an Indian restaurant almost as far along the Eastney Marina as the Hayling Island ferry and lifeboatlaunch but, when you go inside the Bombay Bay, you realise this is no ordinary curry house. Lit gently for an air of constantromance, all the restaurant’s tables are purposefully placed by the windows so customers can enjoy wonderful food, afriendly atmosphere and relish the sea view either by day or at night. For those hot summer nights, the restaurant has a largebalcony overlooking the nearby yachts. CityLife went in the evening and was impressed by the caring attention the staff gaveto our service. Run by a local Indian family, Mr Saliqur Rahman is the Bombay Bay’smanager. The first thing he emphasises, apart from a warm welcome, is how busy they are and how much people seem love to come for both lunches and eveningmeals.
It is true that within minutes of us arriving, the place was filling up. And, most of the customers did the sameas CityLife: we took a taxi to make a night of it because the atmosphere demands you drinkit up with more than several Indian Cobra beers.
Talking with the chef, Lahin Karim, after our delicate, beautifullypresented meal, Lahin told usthat they were trying to add a new dimension to what people of Portsmouth expect from anIndian restaurant. “We’ve added lots of other creative meals that I have devised; ones thathave a hint of Indian influence but provide a variety of tastes. Being on the marina, it’s only rightthat we specialise in many excellent fish dishes.”
Attention to detail is rife in this restaurant, so much so they have fresh red roses on every table. These important touches demonstrate how much the owners’ value their customers.

The Events Manager of Gunwharf
Quays is a great patron of the arts
in Portsmouth, regularly hosting
events and festivals for
enthusiasts of film, photography
and performance. He chose this
iconic image because he felt
it showed one of Portsmouth’s
most important sides; its military
heritage and its important place in
world history as a naval town.
The competition was judged by a formidable panel of bigwigs, experts and artists.
Here’s your chance to meet them. As well as electing the winners, they were each
allowed to choose a personal favourite to spotlight.

As half of The Caravan Gallery, this
roving fine art photographer sees a lot
of the country, documenting the
unusual way the British live and
creating an important social portrait
of a nation in the throes of the Credit
Crunch. Jan chose this image for its
essential charm – this gloriously tacky
holiday photograph is “so typical of
itself”. Interestingly, this image was
sent in from Hong Kong!
This Hampshire-based artist has a
wealth of experience under his belt,
having worked extensively in
illustration, sonic and interventionist
art, photography and is a renowned
champion of disability art. Jon chose
this well composed, evocative image
for the way it speaks of “barriers,
emptiness and hidden treasures. It
brings a lot of memories back”.

Why
te.
The Portsmouth Connection was a bit of an experiment.
We wanted to see what people thought Portsmouth looked
like and what kind of place it was, so we held a photography
competition. We didn’t have the slightest idea of what might
happen. Would anyone enter? Would we just get millions
of pictures of that big white tower? Would it just be dead
seagulls and burnt bits of the Common? We were a little
nervous while we waited for the entries to start rolling in.
When people started to send us their photographs we were
delighted. We were a little less delighted when they didn’t
stop sending them – we were inundated! We started to
regret our well-meant pledge to include everyone who
entered in the exhibition. The city we saw in the
photographs was a very unusual place; it was dramatic and
dynamic, chic and unique – it was Portsmouth.
This little book and the show it celebrates are not just the
result of a great many hours of careful selection and
heart-wrenching decisions, they’re mostly the work of all the
wonderful, creative people who helped out and took part.
So, whether you entered the competition, signed up for
some slave labour, came along to have a look at the show or
just about anything else, this is for you.
Thank you.
