Collective Story Harvest - UCC's Participatory Leadership Journey UCC's journey with participatory leadership began with the work of NDIS Readiness Project.

Listening Arcs Where did participatory leadership make a difference? Participatory leadership shaped the initial decision by Bob to begin preparing for the NDIS by engaging with the people touched by this reform Workshops and interviews with people we support and family members to have a voice What were the pivotal moments? Bob had coffee with Valmae, Toke, Phil and listened Sense making workshop, a client of our service asked 'are you really prepared to listen to me in order for me to live rather than just exist?' New director's arrival and questioning where does participatory leadership sit in the organisation? Sparked establishment of Stakeholder Engagement Strategy What were the points of resistance? Loss of funding, redundancies, restructure Lack of clarity of where does it sit in the organisation and therefor how do we move forward? Where did harvesting show up? There are many artefacts of this journey - documents, artwork, photos, did. The conversations and creativity has made space for people to play with working together differently The meta harvest becomes visible cultural change and people's willingness to question how this fits with decision making What questions are emerging from this story? Is it time to draw a new line in the sand? How can we create space in UCC for an equal department to embed this as an operating system? Are people like Bob willing to unlearn ways of working and embrace change? We have moved from 'no we can't do that' to 'how can we do that?' Comments from story tellers... This has been a valuable process for me, providing the opportunity to reflect on where we have been.

Strategic Harvesting

The purpose of the harvesting process is to support individual and collective meaning making. Harvest occurs on an individual level as well as ground level, community and meta levels. This happens by transforming noise to clarity by: Cluster Synthesise Prioritise It's about picking the fruits of conversations, processing and distributing the products. Turning the apples into juice. Following a full morning it was time to pause and reflect. Participants took some time to consider what they had heard and identify the things they most wanted to take away from our time together. Our needs check identified some themes people wanted to take into our learning on day two. These included: Putting it into practice Meta harvest - how to turn apples into juice? Sensing the need and clarity of questions How do we deal with chaos and negative voices?

8 Breaths of Design

Strategic process design is a balance between content and process where clarity of purpose is the invisible leader.

“We were reminded that participatory

leadership is not something you can

'implement' but to 'practice' brings joy,

usefulness and sustainability.”

Knowledge Expedition Our knowledge expedition provided people the opportunity to participate in two rounds of learning, the themes for which were guided by the day one needs check. Needs, purpose and powerful questions (Toke) Putting it into practice. Stories of application of

participatory processes in UCC (Jason & Ash) Turning apples into juice. Meta-harvest and

planning a harvest (Monica & Penny) Visual facilitation and recording. Hands on drawing

& possibilities for use (Mel) We saw the building blocks for embedding participatory leadership in our way of working and learning together as practice together with play, preparation and building confidence.

Strategic Harvest and Design Masterclass Landscape

“It was the first time we had a portrait version. That came about because of the wall space and in the end fitted the theme and outcomes of the two days really well. For me the Masterclass was about building blocks and understanding the layers of strategic layers of the participatory leadership and providing us with stronger foundation – i.e. knowledge and confidence.” – Nithi Suppiah
