1. Announcements from the Chair

Dr. Macpherson stated there was a great turnout last night for the Community Conversation – Enacting a Better Brockport – in Seymour Union Ballroom from 5:00-6:30pm. About 200 people took part and it lasted until around 8:00pm. Dr. Macpherson urged faculty to talk about this in the classrooms or at least advise students of the resources we have and direct students to areas that might assist them.

A full discussion ensued, talking about opportunities to assist students. Members also spoke of their own concerns and dismay at recent events.

Dr. Macpherson will use tomorrow’s (September 29) 3:30pm Town & Gown meeting in Eagle’s Lookout to discuss this more, and to represent progress on the strategic plan.

2. Review and approval of last meeting notes – September 14, 2016

With no objections, the meeting notes were approved.

3. Updates from Subcommittees a. List of forums you will connect with (i.e. Dr. Macpherson with Town Gown) b. Will you do a focus group? When? c. When will you be ready for open office hours? (one hour)

Transformation Pillar

Dr. Willis stated Transformation is a process of deep, positive change and growth. What we want to change is the Brockport experience: students, faculty, community, and operational/administrative - they all weave together. We will have goals, strategies to achieve those goals, and metrics/tactics to effect those strategies. Transformation will occur in relationships which will, in turn, occur in people.

Dr. Willis used the examples of Wegmans, a company that focuses on the employee, not the customer. This is because if you transform and effect success in your employees, you will also transform the experience for the customer. Alcoa focused on worker safety, which increased productivity and then profits. Members agreed that we would not be talking about changing people, but relationships. Dr. Garvey added the

example of our Holmes Hall, with no air conditioning in the building. The decision to invest in fans during the heat wave was positive—and we should strive to consider other ways to transform our practices, such as providing ice water and lemonade to show we care about the students’ experience. It is about being thoughtful in our approaches and transforming what we can.

Dr. Willis stated we should consider what we can do to better our community relations over the next ten years, to help draw new faculty as well as create a better Brockport experience for all.

Engagement Pillar

Dr. Wilson shared a handout (attached) with the definition and description, and stated the definition is still broad, but they have a detailed description and are honing in on the goals and strategies. An open house / office hours is scheduled for November 11, with even more connection points to come. Dr. Wilson envisions creating a video with several people having a conversation, and will work with College Communications on this.

Others commented: The description’s second sentence perhaps should be a separate paragraph, as it is less broad. All individual pillar goals might be combined and distilled into campus goals for all pillars together, although this remains to be seen.

Community Pillar

Dr. Allen shared a handout (attached) with their working definition and a timeline regarding workflow and events. Mr. Andriatch and Dr. Allen meet on Fridays to distill the Community Pillar work being done online. On October 12, preliminary materials will be brought to the SPC for approval to be posted on the web, followed by Open Office Hours on October 19, with feedback due October 25. There will be a lot of overlap with the Engagement Pillar.

Excellence Pillar

Ms. Webber stated their definition: “The College at Brockport promotes the highest standards in all aspects of the academy, including learning and teaching, scholarship and creative work, civic engagement, campus life, and professional growth.”

And their goals, defined as: “Excellence is achieved by students, faculty, staff, administration, alumni and friends by: 1) Becoming an education person; 2) Doing meaningful work; 3) Meeting social responsibilities; 4) Nurturing the College; and 5) Improving the reputation of the College.

They will regroup Wednesday to further discuss goals, strategies and metrics. Data will be gathered from assessments and student surveys and can be used to improve, not just maintain, excellence. The collegiate learning / critical thinking assessment test is / will be given to a subset of students every three-four years, per Ms. Dearing.

All Pillars

If possible, we should strive to have ALL pillar leaders attend ALL pillar open office hours together.

We need to make sure all pillars have the same “architecture.”

Mission Vision Values

Mr. Mihalyov stated the group looked at other colleges’ mission statements, but did not find any they liked; or any that were particularly unique or enticing (although one member liked the mission statement from a company who builds ships!). The group reviewed community feedback from earlier this year and learned people want something brief and concise, yet memorable. The group plans to come up with phrases to share with the community online to determine which phrases resonate most widely, then link those together. They will also consult with freshman and senior students, to gauge the difference of their responses. The Mission is who we are, the Vision is who we want to be. We will focus on who we are, what we do, and how are we going to create our future.

Others commented: Our current statement is inelegant. Our interim “working” statement should be included in the work going forward, as much effort was put into it earlier this year by the previous committee.

4. Further discussion of review mechanisms

Dr. Maliekal presented his Strategic Planning Review Process Model (see Black Board), stating our Mission is the foundation, our Vision is the desired state, and our Pillars and goals will get us there and help us evaluate progress. His proposal, which was up for discussion, follows:

3

Page 4: Strategic Planning Committee - Brockport · 9/28/2016  · assessments and student surveys and can be used to improve, not just maintain, excellence. The collegiate learning / critical

He proposed a basic architecture of a committee of 5-6 people, including a chairperson and Ms. Dearing (as an ex-officio member), to measure progress. A white paper would be developed with the over-arching goals and detailing the top-down approach: cabinet / divisions / departments. The committee would galvanize the goals and timeframe. The assessment review is bottom-up: departments / divisions / institution level / cabinet.

In a Nutshell: There would be annual goals, a budget allocation, feedback & guidance, a mid-year status report (this would be a new report, due every January), and the end-year summary report (existing report, due in July).

Others commented: This is logical, and a committee smaller than the IEAC as a review mechanism is great. Having a mid-year report and involving the departments is good.

This model keeps the BRC as a separate entity. Members were asked to reflect on this proposal—including pros and cons--and it will be taken up at a future meeting.

5. Next Steps / Action Items

All pillar leaders are to email Ms. Smith ASAP their timeline dates for open office hours, focus groups, etc., for the final list to be distributed to all this week.

At the next meeting (10/12), the Community Pillar team and MVV team will present on their progress, while the other Pillar teams will give updates. At the end of that meeting, we will choose two more Pillar teams to present at the following meeting (10/26), which will then inform us what ALL PILLARS need to prepare for the Town Hall Meeting (10/19 @ 1:25–2:15pm).

ENGAGE/ENGAGEMENT

Engage111ent Pillar Subcomn1ittee Members: Katy Wilson (co-chair), Frances Dearing (co-chair), Sara Kelly, Frank Kuhn, Ralph Trecartin, Laurie Cook, Scott Haines, Abigail Rossman

Broad Based Definition: The College at Brockport is committed to engaged learning - faculty and staff engaging students in meaningful, purposeful, and rewarding educational activities; engagement of faculty and staff in their professions and service; engagement of faculty, staff, and students in the activities of local, regional, national, and global communities.

Description: Engagement is defined as behaviors that fulfill our individual and collective obligation to offer high impact and meaningful learning opportunities that promote intellectual, professional and interpersonal development. The impact of these experiences contributes to the achievement of learning outcomes, scholarly accomplishments and professional growth. Such engagement contributes to the development and maintenance of our collaborative, inclusive community based on reciprocal relationships within and outside the classroom. Faculty and staff are committed to creating an environment and conditions that foster engagement throughout the curriculum and co-curriculum, including high impact and applied learning opportunities. High impact practices are defined and recognized nationally by the Association of American Colleges & Universities. Co-curricular high impact practices have been defined institutionally and developed based on national best practices. These efforts are complimented by the SUNY Applied Learning Initiative which is categorized under three umbrellas known as SUNY Works, SUNY Serves, and SUNY Discovers. SUNY defines applied learning as "an educational approach whereby students learn by engaging in direct application of skills, theories and models" through activities like undergraduate research, internships and service learning. Brockport's comprehensive and cross-divisional approach to engagement will fulfill SUNY's applied learning initiative and further institutional excellence.
