Recommendation 4-2Provide More Choices in General Education

Middle States Association Guidelines

• Does not explicitly define general education requirements

• Has different requirements for associate and bachelor degrees

• Provides guidelines interpreted differently from school to school

Other Institutions

• Interpret Middle States guidelines so as to provide students more

flexibility in their general education choices

Recommendation 5Continue Development of Teaching and Learning Center (TLC)

• TLC at Vaughn is in the position to become a model within the tri-

state area of what a college TLC should be

• Train staff, faculty in Supplemental Instruction (SI) at The

International Center for SI at the University of Missouri Kansas City

– Cost -- Training is $755 per person plus the cost of airfare and hotel

• Establish a committee consisting of staff from the TLC, students

Recommendation 6-1Expand the Role of Freshman Year Experience (FYE)

Beyond the Freshman Year

• Help reduce the “sophomore slump”

• Promote the understanding that FYE is more than a course

– Make FYE office a place where students feel welcomed to Vaughn

– Make FYE office a source of help and support to all students

• Taylor FYE courses for specific majors

• Create a website for FYE

Page 18: Strategic Planning · Total $404,681.00 100.00% BS in Graphics/Gaming Item Cost % of Total Cost Marketing $140,599.00 37.32% ... Continue Development of Teaching and Learning Center

Recommendation 8Determine if Vaughn College Should Offer Minors

• Committee investigated Fordham, Baruch, Stony Brook, etc.

• What minors (if any) should Vaughn offer?– Engineering Management Computational Mathematics

– Literature• What modifications would need to be made to existing programs

to allow for minors?

• Would Vaughn need to hire new faculty in order to offer minors?

These are to be studied further, although the chief recommendation is that the current curricula be strengthened so that Vaughn has a solid base from which to expand.

Recommendation 9AStudy Possibility of Continuing Education Programs

Technical Writing as an Option in the Near Future• Occupational Outlook Handbook (2010-11) shows the need for tech writers is

expected to grow faster than average (18%) for all occupations from 2008 – 2018. Tech writers can earn anywhere between $60K (architectural, engineering, and related services) to $72k (software publishers) [data from the Occupational Employment Statistics (OES) survey], which would make this program attractive to students seeking alternatives in the field of technology.

• Certification in technical writing can be offered 6 months to one year (average 80 – 90 hrs. for certification) for a student cost of approximately $1,700. Offered as a minor in the management department, the curriculum and credit hours would have to be determined more carefully.

• Taught by English instructors [masters (adjuncts) and doctorates in English or Journalism or Communications] and/or public relations professionals with experience in the field (5 years) (including professional technical writers).

• Can be offered online• Some courses, such as basic Technical Writing, Public Relations, and Graphics are already

offered at VaughnThis might be an option to future explore in the next five years as Vaughn strengthens its current liberal arts program. Faculty would need to be trained in this field or at least one new faculty member hired.Cost—Moderate—Train and/or hire faculty to teach varied level technical writing

Recommendation 10Increase Advertising of Vocational Programs

and Their Academic Continuations

BS in Aviation Maintenance

BS in Aviation Maintenance Management

– Employers are increasingly seeking A&P mechanics with academic

degrees

Cost – Related to advertising and space

Page 24: Strategic Planning · Total $404,681.00 100.00% BS in Graphics/Gaming Item Cost % of Total Cost Marketing $140,599.00 37.32% ... Continue Development of Teaching and Learning Center

Recommendation 11Cautiously Plan for Growth of Vaughn College

• Need more classroom and parking space

• Growth could be easier by utilizing Online/Hybrid modalities and underutilized Friday classrooms

• Committee Cautions against overly aggressive growth

• One of Vaughn’s strengths is its small size– Need to keep the good aspects of a small school as we

grow
