Dear Parish Family, At their monthly meetings in 2011, the Pastoral Council and the Stewardship Commission studied and discussed Albert Winseman’s book, Growing an Engaged Church. This book focuses on building a community of enthusiastic members who are growing spiritually and who are also reaching out in concern and service to the world. Part of the planning at that time included developing/completing a parish survey. Participants in that 2011 Survey included: 1,008 parishioners (3,680 in households and respondents). In the fall of 2017, the Pastoral Council, Stewardship Commission and the Finance Council spent several meetings discussing and developing future plans for the parish. We made the decision to conduct a second parish survey. We are very interested in comparing the 2018 Survey with the 2011 Survey – what progress have we made in growing in discipleship? We want to determine where we are as a com-munity and to assess where we want to be in the future. This 2018 survey would give us data to use in planning future programs. Several questions surfaced at the meetings: What else could we do? Besides publishing a parish survey, we talked about how to develop a young adult ministry at the parish. There is a vast demographic in the community from ages 18-36. This is our data-gathering stage - receiving input from this specific group would be very helpful. This time there are two separate surveys: a Parish Survey and a Young Adult Ministry Survey. There are links to both on our website. Also there are copies on the heaters and in the narthex for those who don’t have access to a computer. Mary Beth Celio, Director of Research in the Archdiocese, is devel-oping a parish survey using some of the process outlined in the Engaged Church information. She as-sisted us in developing a short Young Adult Survey. Please go on our website: www.sacredheartlacey.com. On the opening screen, scroll down to the two links: Parish Survey (http://26.selectsurvey.net/SeattleArchdiocese/SHLacey2018) and Young Adult Survey (Ages 18-36) (http://26.selectsurvey.net/SeattleArchdiocese/SHYoungAdults). Once you have completed either the Parish Survey and/or Young Adult Survey, then click the but-ton and it will immediately be sent to the Archdiocese. Paper copies of the survey will be mailed to the Archdiocese. Once the results have been compiled, the survey report will be sent to us. These two reports will be published in the bulletin and copies will be available in the narthex. We invite you to complete these surveys. Your responses will assist us in better understanding how we are living out our parish mission statement to live as “a community called to be Christ for one another through prayer and sacraments, formation, outreach and stewardship.” The Advisory Groups will review the results to help us determine how we can best fulfill our mission and become a more engaged parish. In families, husbands and wives should complete separate surveys. All responses are anonymous on the Parish Survey. Everyone high school age and older is invited to participate. For those completing the Young Adult Survey, contact information is optional and is needed for organizational reasons. Respond with your first impression rather than trying to analyze the questions. Thank you for your assistance. It is greatly appreciated. In Christ, Fr. Tim, Pastoral Council and Stewardship Commission

Fifth Sunday of Easter The good steward lives the advice of St. John, loving in deed and in truth, rather than just talking about it. In today’s Gospel, Jesus says that God is glorified when a disciple, grafted in Christ, produces abundantly and bears much fruit. The disciple must then be a good steward of that abundance.

On this Fifth Sunday of Easter, John’s powerful story of the vine and branches (Jn 15:1-8) indi-cates just how close Jesus is to the Father. Sometimes it is hard to tell where the vine ends and the branches begin. This image, Jesus as the vine and we as the branches, tells us about the close relationship Jesus wants with each of us. It should be easy for people to see we are Good News people! How do they do that? By seeing our actions, the world sees how the Gospel influ-ences our lives. Jesus went about doing the Father’s work. He took time to heal physical and spiritual wounds. At the last supper five weeks ago, Jesus, the leader, went on his knees to wash his disciples’ feet. He gave them and us an example of service. As branches connected to the

Vine, does the fruit of our lives touch others in a loving and healing fashion? We continue to celebrate the joyous season of Easter. Christ is risen! How will Christ’s resurrection inspire in us to a resurrected life of help and service to the least among us? When we look to serve others who need our compassion, love, and mercy, then we can be assured that “the Father is glo-rified, because we bear much fruit and become his disciples” (Jn15:8).

HAPPENINGS AROUND OUR PARISH

RCIA & Adult Faith Formation Contact Martha Arenas at 491-0890 x104 or [email protected]

Today’s Gospel uses the common motif found in the Old Testament that refers to the people of God: the motif of vineyard. The vineyard was a metaphor or symbol for the Peo-ple of God: the Israelites. Very of-ten it was used as a metaphor to highlight the sin of the people. Thus

the pruning of the branches is a logical sign of God’s judgment of the sinner. God was the vine-dresser and the vineyard was God’s people in God’s kingdom. Christians juxtaposed the image of vineyard from Israel to Christ. Jesus is the new vineyard. Jesus replaced Jewish worship. He is the new worship. Also, when Jesus said “I am the Bread if Life”, “I am the Way the Truth and the Life,” “I am the Vine and you are the branches,” it is a tes-tament to his divine identity.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process through which interested adults are gradually introduced to the Roman Catholic faith and way of life. Children over 7 years of age whom were not baptized as infants are also initiated through an adapted process of this Rite. The RCIA is also the venue for people that were baptized as infants, but did not receive any fur-ther formation and sacraments.
