Street Art• Street Art or Chalk Art is a fun, creative, interactive process whereby

“artists” plan and execute (large) scale murals or tableaus in public spaces; streets, sidewalks, building walls, etc• The idea is to create a “trompe d’oeil” ie to “trick the eye” into

thinking there is some real (impossible) scene in front of the viewer• A canyon in the middle of the street• A waterfall• A gnome sweeping leaves under the sidewalk

• See examples following

Proposal• I propose to organize a regional contest similar to the Parksville

sandcastle competition or the Dragon Boat Festival• Competitors would deposit $100 (or scaled) to reserve a plot to do art

on• A parallel free street art section with chalk would provide a small (6ft-

4ft) piece of sidewalk for Nanaimo youth to draw on – fun, judged? Prizes?• One or more large regional sponsor would be secured to provide

prizes and chalk

DNBIA Link• I am asking the DNBIA for support in the form of agreement to close

off Commercial or the waterfront walkway?? To provide space to create the art• Whatever street(s) are chosen, we would approach the city for

permits• This would be part of the “Culture Days” event on Sept 27-29 and

would be promoted along with all Culture Days events but would use Social Media to reach the broader regional audience.

Wall ExamplesImagine you could get an arresting image like the one to the right on the old Sam the Record Man building on the main road- that would get visiting drivers attention
