Stress

• Mental and physical condition that occurs when a

person must adjust or adapt to the environment.

• Stressor: Condition or event in the environment

that challenges or threatens a person

( adapted from Thomson Higher Education, 2007)

A Few of the Causes: Frustration

• Frustration: Negative

emotional state that

occurs when one is

prevented from reaching

desired goals

(adapted from Wadsworth/Thomson Learning, 2001)

A Few Reactions to Frustration

• Displaced Aggression: Redirecting aggression to a

target other than the source of one’s frustration

• Scapegoating: Person or group are blamed for

conditions they did not create; the scapegoat is a

habitual target of displaced aggression

• Circumvention – Go around it

• Withdrawal

• Persistence

(adapted from Wadsworth/Thomson Learning, 2001)

Types:

▪ Approach - Approach Conflict

▪ Avoidance - Avoidance Conflict

▪ Approach - Avoidance Conflict.

Conflict: Stressful condition that occurs when a person must choose between contradictory needs, desires, motives or demands

(adapted from Wadsworth/Thomson Learning, 2001)

Causes of Stress: Conflict

Roles (real or perceived expectations for behavior)

▪ Role Overload

▪ Role Conflict

▪ Role Ambiguity

Control

More Causes of Stress: Control

( adapted from Thomson Higher Education, 2007)

A perception of control can lead to a

lower perception of a stressor. A

perceived lack of control can increase

the amount of perceived stress.

Physiological Responses to

Stress: Fight-or-Flight

Response

(adapted from Wadsworth/Thomson Learning, 2007)

Brain-body pathways in stress. In times of

stress, the brain sends signals along two

pathways. The pathway through the

autonomic nervous system controls the

release of catecholamine hormones that help

mobilize the body for action. The pathway

through the pituitary gland and the endocrine

system controls the release of corticosteroid

hormones that increase energy and ward off

tissue inflammation.

General Adaptation Syndrome

• Series of bodily reactions to prolonged stress.

Occurs in three stages:

– Alarm Reaction: Body resources are mobilized to cope

with added stress

– Stage of Resistance: Body adjusts to stress but at a

high physical cost; resistance to other stressors is

lowered now

– Stage of Exhaustion: Body’s resources are drained and

stress hormones are depleted. Results might be:

• Psychosomatic disease

• Loss of health

• Complete collapse

(adapted from Wadsworth/Thomson Learning, 2001)

Factors That May Moderate the Impact of Stress

• Social Support

– Increased immune functioning

• Optimism

– More adaptive coping

– Pessimistic explanatory style

• Conscientiousness

– Fostering better health habits

(adapted from Wadsworth/Thomson Learning, 2001)

Factors That May Moderate the Impact of Stress

• Autonomic reactivity

– Cardiovascular reactivity to stress

• Hardy Personality

– Sense of personal commitment to self and family

– Feel have control over life

– See life as series of challenges, not threats

(adapted from Wadsworth/Thomson Learning, 2001)

A Few Coping Methods

Physical fitness and mortality. Blair and colleagues (1989) studied death rates among men

and women who exhibited low, medium, or high fitness. As you can see, fitness was

associated with lower mortality rates in both sexes.
