PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE P1 Happy Christmas! (Please forgive the affectation: remember, I had two months at the National Theatre of Great Britain this past year!) And what a happy Christmas it promises to be: first and fore- most, the return of our “annual guest,” How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, as ever enlivened with some performers from over the five years of its remarkable run, with new and welcome faces among them. Like the Who kids who have “grown up” in these roles, we take great pleasure in extending the Globe spirit to new friends happy to spend their holidays here with us in... well... amazing shapes! And again, we tip our Cat Hat in the direction of our beloved Audrey Geisel, who had the vision to know the Grinch needed an especially “warm” home for the holi- days. Then, into the Cassius Carter comes a new, sassy entry: Striking 12, a delicious little bon bon of a New Year’s musical, per- formed and written by the brilliantly versatile GrooveLily trio under the direction of our favorite musical director, now stage director, Ted Sperling, who was last here with The Full Monty. And as a special treat for our patrons and our patronas to the immediate South, it’s our great pleasure to present Teatro Máscara Mágica’s irresistible La Pastorela de Felicidad, done so both English speaking and Spanish speaking audiences can share the wonderful story. What a year we’ve had: and we have you to thank for it, because there is no magic of theatre without the miracle of audi- ence. Remember, just because these productions don’t come wrapped in red ribbon doesn’t mean we haven’t shopped and ordered them just for you. It’s a family time of year, and we never forget that you are ours! May the spirit of Christmas last deep into the coming, wonderful New Year for each and every one of you. JACK O’BRIEN Artistic Director Thank you for joining us for this won- derful holiday festival at The Old Globe. We’ve got an exciting trio of productions that celebrate the season, including our annual tradition of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, made possible through the gen- erosity of Audrey Geisel and the San Diego Union-Tribune. This delightful holiday favorite is a perfect way to begin the Globe’s yearlong Seussentennial celebration. With the 100th anniversary of Dr. Seuss’ birthday approaching in March, the Globe is thrilled to be a part of this national tribute to Dr. Seuss’ legacy of creativity and imagination. In addition to providing 4,000 free tickets to under- served children in the community, the Globe is also inaugurating the Grinch Children’s Reading Initiative, an ongoing literacy pro- ject for first-graders involved in our annual Seuss-abration for Kids event. The Carter and Festival Theatres are also playing host to two fun holiday productions: Striking 12, GrooveLily’s delightful New Year’s Eve rock musical, and Teatro Máscara Mágica’s La Pastorela de Felicidad – the traditional English/Spanish nativity play. These productions bring us closer to many segments of the community. In so many ways The Old Globe reaches out and serves the needs of both adults and young people. In fact, this year our entire education program is being rethought and expanded. Exciting plans are underway to enhance our already successful ini- tiatives, such as Teatro Meta, in which students explore and express their life experiences through the art of theatre; as well as the Young Globe Shakespeare Conservatory, which offers young people an intense immersion into the life and work of William Shakespeare, culminating in a performance of one of his works at the Globe. Additionally, we are in the process of creating the Old Globe Youth Council, to involve students in the everyday workings of the Globe and to give them a voice in future Globe projects. At this time of year I encourage you to consider making or renewing your year-end or special holiday gift in support of all that we do and all that you have come to cherish at the Globe. Thank you for your ongoing support of this dynamic institution, and best wishes to you and your families this holiday season. LOUIS G. SPISTO Executive Director Welcome to

The Winter Holidays are always a treat for me here at The Old Globe. They are filled with tradition, including, of course, our tradition of spicing up the season with new surprises for you to enjoy. We’re pleased you’ve chosen to join us.

The most cherished of our Winter Holiday traditions is our annual presentation of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas!,which this year has special meaning. The year 2004 is the Seussentenial, the 100th birthday of Dr. Seuss himself, Theodor S.Geisel. As you watch this wonderful performance, please join us in expressing special thanks to “Mrs. Dr. Seuss" herself, AudreyGeisel, for her extraordinary personal gift to the Globe. Her gift, and the San Diego Union-Tribune's ongoing sponsorship of thisclassic production, defines for me the true spirit of the Holidays. We are ever grateful to them.

And our new Holiday surprises? Just wait until you see Striking 12 in the Cassius Carter Centre Stage – a hip and fun holi-day concert celebration for those looking for less traditional Holiday fare. This charming, cabaret-style production blends a con-

temporary tale of the Holiday blues with Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Match Girl. Don’t miss it.Another gift to you for the Holidays is Teatro Máscara Mágica’s production of La Pastorela de Felicidad in the Lowell Davies Festival Theatre. This is a

Christmas tradition, which we last brought to you in 1994 – a rambunctious pageant of song, jokes and mock battles between angels and simple folksagainst the forces of evil. Bundle up, bring the kids and enjoy.

The Holidays are also a time to express thanks for good things we have enjoyed during the past year. We at The Old Globe have greatly enjoyed yoursupport this past year as subscribers, ticket buyers and donors. We thank you. We believe you’ve chosen well. From all of us in The Old Globe family, HappyHolidays. May the New Year bring us new opportunities to think and grow.
