The word for strive in Greek that is used is the same word that is the root of the English word for agony, indicating that Christian life is an intense and perilous journey. And, indeed, a journey it is. There should be no thought in the hearts and minds of Christian people that life is without tribulation or should be easy. I often confess that my own life as a non-practicing Catholic was far easier than the life I lead today, but infinitely far less worth living. The life we share in Christ is not solidified in one action of acceptance, but in a lifetime of moving forward. And what is it that we all move toward? Toward Christ – The Church is the means and way by which we become related to God. We do not join a Church for a static moment, but, rather, a dynamic experience with a people who are made one by a man who gave everything for us. Christian experience, therefore, demands us to move forward as a mountain climber journeys bravely ever onward. We cannot go to God saying as the parable teaches us “but we ate and drank in your company!?” It is not enough. God sees us as always transitioning from earth to the top of the mountain that we never reach in this life. Do not rest in the journey, and resist settling into your world view… See life as a constant opportunity to deepen the life journey into Christ – ever spiraling more deeply into his joy and peace with each passing moment. Your servant in Our Blessed Lord, Fr. Michael

St. Mary’s School’s school year begins on September 5, 2019. Students, faculty, and staff look forward to another year of faith, friends, service, and learning.

As we prepare for the new school year, we are excited to in-troduce a new teacher here at St. Mary’s. Meet Miss Ruthie Salvetti!

Faculty Spotlight: Miss Salvetti is the new 3rd grade teacher at St. Mary’s School. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Classical Lan-guages from Franciscan University of Steubenville in Steubenville, Ohio. She is pursuing a Master’s degree in Childhood Education from St. John Fisher College in Rochester as well as teaching certi-fication in Childhood Education. Before joining the St. Mary's School faculty, she was a third-grade teacher and a K-5 substitute in the Oswego City and Pulaski school districts.

Why St. Mary’s? “I wanted to teach at St. Mary's because of the amazing Catholic culture. I have taught in private (Protestant) and public school, but I wanted to be in a uniquely Catholic school where the Catholic faith is integrated into life and learning. I love St. Mary's because everyone has welcomed me into their community, and I know that this positive culture is a part of what the school is.”

Fun facts about Miss Salvetti: “I love movies, music, and style from the 1930s to 1950s. (She’s a huge Audrey Hepburn fan!) I've played the flute for Mass since high school, and my favorite saint is St. Joseph.”

Our Parish recently celebrated

Immediate Opening: Part-Time Organist for St. Bridget’s Church

Responsibilities: conducting ½ hour rehearsal with choir, and playing 1 hour per week at 9:30am Mass. No music planning is involved as the music director sends the hymn selections in advance. Additional: The position opens up the opportunity to play (if desired) at funerals, weddings, special liturgies and Holy Days, and substituting at St Mary’s. If interested: Please send letters of interest and resumes to Tony DiPrima, Director of Finance and Administration, at [email protected].

Our amazing volunteers are so appreciated!

We would like to recognize the amazing work and commit-ment of those volunteers that gave of their time and efforts to help prepare for and work the lawn sale, pancake break-fast, chicken barbeque, and parish festival—and we know that many of our volunteers do so year after year. Pulling off these events so seamlessly is no easy task; planning starts several months prior and countless hours go into pre-paring for and hosting the events. Our volunteers are in-credibly generous with their time and are such a blessing to our parish community!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Letter to a Suffering Church - Copies Available This weekend, copies of Bishop Barron's book "Letter to a Suffering Church" will be available in Church. We invite you to pick up a free copy. You are also invited to join us next month for a book discussion; please be with us from 9am - 10:30am or 7pm - 8:30pm on September 18. This will give us a chance to gather as a faith community for focused discussion and to move toward healing together.

The annual Red Mass will be celebrated at 12:10 pm on September 6, 2019, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, 296 Flower City Park, Rochester, offered by the Diocese of Rochester and the Saint Thomas More Lawyers Guild. Bishop Salvatore R. Matano will be the principal celebrant and homilist. He invites members of the legal community to attend to pray for God's guidance, as well as the lay faithful to prayerfully support those in the legal community in their pursuit of justice and truth, guided by Jesus Christ. The Red Mass has a rich tradition within the Catholic Church, dating back to the thirteenth century. The first par-ticipants were comprised of lawyers, judges and govern-ment officials who processed into church donning red robes to signify the fire of the Holy Spirit. Today, the Red Mass celebration continues this noble custom of imploring the guidance of the Holy Spirit upon all who pursue and pro-mote justice in our community. A light reception will be held after Mass.

Please Pray for Our Sick and Their Caregivers

PARISHIONERS: If you notice someone on the Prayer List that no longer needs to be there, we ask you to please contact Maureen at 394-1220 X 10 with the information so the list can be updated. We fully realize that some have long-term illnesses and want to remain on the list. When requests are made we ask that we be notified when they can be removed from the list; however, that does not always happen. We know you all have more eyes and ears in the community so we are asking for your able assistance. Thank you.

Sharing the Gospel: Heaven will be wonderful. People from all over the world will be there to enjoy God's friendship. No matter how small you feel now, you will always be important to God in heaven. Once you accept the gift of love from Jesus, you will want to change your life. You will want to spend time with God, and you will want to show love to other people. Then you can look forward to heaven.

Prayer: Dear God, help me to do all that I can to grow closer to you.

SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE & Help Students Go Back to School Prepared to Succeed

Help Support St. Benedict Parish’s Summer-Long

We are still collecting school supplies (pens, pencils, notebook paper, notebooks, scissors, markers, Kleenex, etc.). Collection bins are at the Dougherty Hall entrance of St. Mary’s and at the table at the read of St. Bridget’s Church. The inventory we collect will be shared with needy children in Bloomfield, Canandaigua, and the migrant community. Make good use of all those sales, not only for your own children and grandchildren, but also for others who do not have the resources to gather all the supplies needed for the coming school year.

Day of Prayer: “Looking at the World Through the Eyes of Faith and Finding God in All Things” How do we learn to see God everywhere, learn to talk to Him throughout the day, and more importantly, learn to listen to Him speak to us in the ordinary things of life? All are welcome to join Fr. Frank Jones, C.Ss.R. on Septem-ber 10, 2019 at Notre Dame Retreat House and explore these questions during September’s Day of Prayer. The con-ference will run from 9:30am – 12:15pm, followed by lunch, free time, Confessions, and ending with Mass at 2pm. There is a $25.00 registration fee for the conference. For more information or to register, please call (585) 394-5700 or email [email protected].

Note: If you wish to put up posters in the Church for parish ministries, etc., we ask that you not use any tape to adhere them to wooden surfaces, and that you first contact the PAC before posting. We thank you for assisting us with keeping our recently restored spaces beautiful and uncluttered.
