As we head into the final two weeks of the term I am encouraging the students and staff to ensure they are looking after their health and getting plenty of rest. Fatigue is settling in after another jam-packed term of learning. Everyone should be very proud of all their hard work! Curriculum Corner In this issue the Curriculum Corner will be highlighting Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS). The study of HASS plays an important role in harnessing students’ curiosity and imagination about the world they live in and empowers them to actively shape their lives; make reflective, informed decisions; value their belonging in a diverse and dynamic society; and positively contribute locally, nationally, regionally and globally. For more information on this terms HASS topics please read page 2. Kindy Here at Stonehenge State School we offer a Remote Kindergarten program. This term, among with many other achievements, I have noticed a considerable increase in vocabulary amongst the kindy students, an increased understanding of the school routine and overall, a clearer vernacular. For more information please read page 3. Lunch on the Lawn Stonehenge State School has a tradition of offering ‘Lunch on the Lawn’ at the end of each term to all families of children attending our school. This event is an opportunity for the students to showcase their work throughout the term, to feel proud of their work and to enjoy an ‘early mark’ in celebration of their hard work! After the presentations, families are invited to remain at school and enjoy a BBQ lunch – an opportunity to socialise with other parents and staff. Due to Covid-19, this is our first Lunch on the Lawn for 2020 and as such, we are excited for the children to share their accomplishments. Please RSVP by Tuesday 16 th June for catering purposes. P&C Meeting As scheduled at our previous meeting, the P&C association will be conducting a face- to-face meeting on the 25th of June at 3:10pm. At this stage there is no restriction for us in terms of meeting face-to-face however, if you are unavailable to attend, a teleconference option will be available. I will provide the details for this closer to the event. My understanding is that there are a few items to be discussed in general business – some great ideas have been proposed. G’day,

Thank you for taking the time to read the Stonehenge State School Newsletter.

As we head into the final two weeks of the term I am encouraging the students and staff to ensure they are looking after their health and getting plenty of rest. Fatigue is settling in after another jam-packed term of learning. Everyone should be very proud of all their hard work!

Curriculum Corner

In this issue the Curriculum Corner will be highlighting Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS). Kindy

Here at Stonehenge State School we offer a Remote Kindergarten program. This term, among with many other achievements, I have noticed a considerable increase in vocabulary amongst the kindy students, an increased understanding of the school routine and overall, a clearer vernacular. Lunch on the Lawn

Curriculum Corner – HASS

Year 1-2

This term students are learning about the natural, managed and constructed features of places. Students observe, identify and describe these features within their school and at a local level. They recount Dreamtime Stories of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Peoples and identify the natural features. Students describe the features of a local park and investigate how parks are cared for.

Key inquiry questions:

• What are the different features of places?

• How can we care for places?

The focus achievement standards are:

Year 1

• Identify and describe the features of places and their location at a local scale and identify changes to the features of places.

• They recognise that people describe the features of places differently and describe how places can be cared for.

• Collect data from observations, reflect on their learning and suggest ways to care for places and present observations and findings.

Year 2

• Recognise the significant features of places and identify and describe how places can be cared for.

• Recognise that places can be described at different scales.

• Locate information from observations and from sources provided.

• Sort, record and interpret data from a variety of sources.

• Reflect on their learning to suggest ways to care for places and sites of significance

Year 5-6

This term students focus on developing an understanding of why decisions need to be made when allocating resources for society's needs and wants. They study the various factors that influence them when making decisions and examine methods that can help with consumer decision making.

Key inquiry questions:

• Why do I have to make choices as a consumer?

• What influences the decisions I make?

• What can I do to make informed decisions?

The focus achievement standards are:

Year 5

• Identify and describe the interconnections between people and the human and environmental characteristics of places, and between components of environments.

• Identify the effects of these interconnections on the characteristics of places and environments.

• Recognise that choices need to be made when allocating resources.

• Collect data and represent large-scale maps.

• Work with others to generate alternative responses to an issue or challenge.

• Reflect on their learning to independently propose action, describing the possible effects of their proposed action.

Year 6

• Identify and describe the interconnections between people and the human and environmental characteristics of places, and between components of environments.

• Identify the effects of these interconnections on the characteristics of places and environments.

• Recognise that choices need to be made when allocating resources.

• Recognise why choices about the allocation of resources involve trade-offs.

• Collect data from primary and secondary sources.

• Use criteria to make decisions and identify the advantages and disadvantages of preferring one decision over others.

The Early Years Count – Kindergarten

Kindy

Kindy is a part-time educational program available to children in the year before school.

Here at Stonehenge State School our kindy students:

• Make friends, share and play with others

• Express themselves through art, dance and dramatic play

• Learn through new experiences

• Become more confident and feel strong

• Communicate ideas and feelings

• Build on their knowledge and explore new ideas, helping their confident transition to school

Electrical Safety in the HomeHeros at Home

The Ergon Network and Energex recently launched Heroes at Home to remind students of electrical safety in their home.

Heroes at Home is a series of fun and creative activities and electrical home safety information for students and families.

It is a great way to introduce your child to electrical safety in the home.

Fine Motor Skills

Fine motor skills are those that involve a refined use of the small muscles which control the hand, fingers and thumb. With the development of these skills, a child is able to complete important tasks such as writing, feeding oneself, buttoning and zippering.

Here at Stonehenge State School we incorporate fine motor activates with other key learning areas such as literacy and numeracy. This is to enhance students’ cognitive development and create an engaging, hands on activity.

This week the Kindy and Year 1s & 2s combined threading and handwriting (H) as well as skip counting with threaded beads.
