I AM CONSTANTLY CHALLENGED AND CHANGED BY THE PERSPECTIVES THAT MY PEERS BRING INTO THE DISCUSSION. THESE PEOPLE ARE AUTHENTIC, CRAZY SMART, AND COMMITTED TO THEIR COMMUNITIES AND TO BETTERING THE WORLD.LAURA BUCKNER, MBA/MA in Educational Leadership ’15
At the Lorry I. Lokey School of Business and Public Policy,
you’ll grow as an ethical and socially responsible leader. You’ll
gain the strategic perspective, business knowledge, and
management skills to deliver strong organizational performance
while mindfully making a positive impact on society and the
environment. An array of learning experiences—including
classes, internships, and conferences—will deepen your
understanding and practice of the key principles of socially
responsible leadership: ethical decision making and governance,
social and community accountability, diversity and inclusion,
and environmental sustainability.
GO BEYOND THE TRADITIONAL MBA.
Located at the heart of the Mills College campus, the Lokey School of
Business and Public Policy offers a high degree of intellectual challenge in a
collaborative, personalized learning environment. Small classes feature close
interaction among faculty and students, lively discussion, and project-focused
teamwork. In this environment, you’ll master business fundamentals and hone
your critical-thinking, analytic, and quantitative skills. You’ll develop a flair for
collaborative problem solving while you strengthen your voice for leadership.
With four paths to a master of business administration (MBA) and two innovative joint master’s degrees to
choose from, you’ll find a degree program that perfectly suits your educational needs and professional
goals. You can further customize your program by choosing concentrations and electives that focus
on your area of interest. And you can create a schedule that works for you by selecting from day
and evening courses during fall and spring semesters. Summer classes expand your options.
The full-time MBA can be completed in two
to three years and the part-time MBA can be
completed in three to five years.
The bachelor’s-to-master’s accelerated degree
enables Mills undergraduates to complete all
requirements for the bachelor’s degree, then continue
for one additional year to complete the MBA.
The joint MBA/MA in educational leadership
prepares leaders committed to innovation in education
and can be completed in three years or less.
The joint master’s degree in public policy and
business administration (MPP/MBA) prepares you
to harness the power of policy and business to
address pressing social problems. The degree can
be completed within three years.

ONE-ON-ONE ATTENTION
AN MBA WITH A CAUSEThe Mills MBA Program opened so many doors
and expanded my thinking around the range of
leadership opportunities that I could pursue. It gave
me the skills to strategically and financially prepare
companies for growth that aligns with my personal
values and inspires new models for making
financial and social impact. Through the program’s
Career Services Office, I secured an incredible
internship at Inner City Advisors that provided
practical lessons to complement the program’s
academic framework, and later developed into a
full-time position. Today, I invest in growing small
businesses that create good jobs—and, in the
process, a more equitable and impactful economy
in the Bay Area.

“I CHOSE MILLS BECAUSE IT BUILDS FEARLESS AND COMPASSIONATE LEADERS WITH THE NECESSARY SKILLS TO THRIVE IN BUSINESS.
”
A VISIONARY ENTREPRENEURMy friends at Mills and I brainstormed about
how business can solve problems. I knew there
was an unmet need for masculine clothes for
women and transmen, and with fellow students’
encouragement, I came to believe I could fill that
need. As I planned the launch of Saint Harridan,
my network of Mills friends and faculty provided
expertise, capital, and ongoing encouragement—
plus a multitude of connections. As I continue
growing the business, skills I gained in classes
and the management practicum I did with a
local clothing company have proven invaluable
to strategic thinking and tactical operations.
Saint Harridan exemplifies the Mills MBA social
value ethos. We have an important mission, and
we accomplish it through sustainable business
practices. It’s my perfect world.

STAND OUT. TAKE ACTION.
The insights and skills you gain in the classroom will be enriched by opportunities
to connect with leaders of innovative Bay Area businesses and social enterprises.
Through fieldwork and internships, you’ll apply theory to solving complex issues
and create change for yourself and local communities.
The Center for Socially Responsible Business at
Mills College brings together students, thought and
practice leaders, policy makers, and others to share
ideas for building profitable, sustainable organizations
that address social and environmental problems.
The center supports collaborative faculty-student
research, publishes reports, organizes workshops,
and arranges internships. The center also hosts a
high-profile annual conference in partnership with
the Lokey School of Business and Public Policy
chapter of Net Impact, an international organization
of MBA students and professionals who are working
for a sustainable future.
The city of Oakland serves as a laboratory for
experiential learning that integrates theory and
practice. Through internships and management
practica supervised by faculty, students act as
strategists, analysts, marketers, and consultants for
businesses and other organizations. Students have
served as advisors to local entrepreneurs, conducted
studies of local businesses and the economy for the
city government, drafted legislation, and, as a service
project of our Net Impact chapter, provided pro bono
consulting to local nonprofit organizations.

NET IMPACT RANKINGS Mills earns consistently high marks from Net Impact:
INVESTING IN CHANGEAt Mills I found a community of students and
faculty who believe in creating shared value:
in increasing the size of the pie for business
and society. When we discuss case studies in
class, we ask whether a particular company
is sustainable, or whether a leader is acting
ethically. Professors help us make connections
with organizations working to benefit the
community, and students in our Net Impact
chapter volunteer as consultants for nonprofits.
Through internships with sustainable finance
institutions, I realized that I could make a positive
impact on society by providing responsible
banking services and raising investors’ awareness
of how they can create change.
