A week of walks in and around Stroud, with something for everyone!

Saturday 8th Sept – Sunday 16th SeptDesigned, illustrated and produced by Steve Roberts: ‘The Big Classroom’ Tel: 01453 753123.

Stroud’s first walking festival will take placethis September, 2007, from Saturday the 8thuntil Sunday the 16th. It has been organisedby Stroud Town Council in partnership with ahost of local environmental and educationalgroups and organisations. They hope to buildthe festival into a major annual event.

Over a dozen walks have been organised this year. Each walk will be led by a trained guide, with knowledge of their respective routes. They all takeplace in or close to Stroud. There should be somethingof interest for everyone. If there isn’t, you might like toorganise your own walk with a few friends or associates. However often you walk, however faryou walk, for whatever reason, celebrate it a little more during the festival week.

The Stroud Valleys are a wonderful place to walk. There is a great variety of landscapes and habitats, natural and man made to explore - river valleys where kingfisher and dipper live, wooded hillsides and escarpments, high grassy commons and beacons with fantastic views, narrow winding lanes clinging to the valley sides that link small villages and settlements.Added to the mix is the heritage associated with the industrial past, in particular, the clothmills, mill ponds and the canal.

Stroud is surrounded by the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and there are plentyof footpaths and bridleways that allow us to appreciate just what a fantastic area this is.

September has been a good month in recent years and we all hope for good weather this year. As the seasonschange from Summer to Autumn, the landscape is beginning to change and it’s a great time to go walking.

Stout footwear and all weather clothing is advised on all ofthe planned walks. On longer walks, a picnic lunch or lunchat a local inn are options.

Views from Selsley Common over the Severn Vale and Doverow Hill

There are practical limitson numbers for the walks. For some you will need tobook in advance. For othersyou can turn up on the day.

Schools who book for walks, should ensure they have the necessary adult supervision.
