We believe that best concept designs are made by interaction and comunication between investor, architecs and engineers, as they require integration of experience and knowledge of various disciplines. That is the only way we can assure that our solutions cover all projects’ requirements and conditions.

Structural concept design above all requires appropriate identification of local conditions, including enviromental impact of designed buildings, soil and groundwater conditions, existing weather conditions and determination of users’ specific requirements.

BIMThe scope of structural engineering services at WSP covers design at every stage of the investment process.

The first stage comprises preparation and development of project requirements, together with architect, investor and other participants of the design process. At the stage from concept design to execution design we undertake identification of the ground and water conditions, define foundation type, determine influence of the investment on other buildings, specify and illustrate loads map and prepare structural model. Then, we integrate the loads and their combinations into the model to ensure buildings’ stability.

After we develop detailed solutions and drawings, multidisciplinary coordination commences and continues until execution design has been finished. Final solutions are verified and coordinated in the final model. After design process has been finished and construction begins, we conduct author’s supervision and once construction is terminated, we prepare post-construction documentation.

BIM APPROACH

Approach to design using BIM technology is more than just a building development process; it is a comprehensive and holistic model that enhances efficiency of construction, building use, up to the end of a building’s lifecycle. Our engineers have experience using BIM approach. We have the skills and knowledge in using BIM software from working on projects from various sectors.

At WSP we have the experience, technology and ability to undertake full BIM coordination of a design and construction process.

Benefits of using BIM approach:

• Improves design process and multidisciplinary coordination at all stages;

• Allows for effective changes’ implementation —at the same time analytical and drawing-related;

• Makes it easier to find and resolve problems that could emerge during construction;

• Facilitates control and communication between all participants of the construction process;

• Introduces cohesion of project’s standards;

• Improves cost planning and tender process;

• Facilitates construction planning and reduction of construction risks;

• Allows for effective building management during use phase.

Specifics of using BIM in structural design process:

We create three-dimensional model of a building’s structure at the earliest possible stage of the design process—this allows us to identify many elements that require bespoke solutions, what facilitates investment cost estimation already at the concept design stage. The 3D model forms a basis for creation of calculation models and improves multidisciplinary coordination at each design process stage, what significantly influences the time required for its creation and its final quality.

Depending on investor’s or general contractor’s requirements regarding the level of precision and scope of information on individual structural elements, our model can be directly used to create bill of quantities, construction phasing and, as experience of international general contractors shows, to create safety plans and control the construction process. After construction is finished, the model, together with models of other disciplines, can help to manage the building.

HIGH-RISEBUILDINGS

On one level it’s simple logic. When there’s high demand for space and very little available land, building vertically is the only answer. But that’s not the only reason cities are building tall. High-rise construction has become shorthand for ambition, success, prosperity, technical achievement. Innovation and evolution in a whole range of technologies, from damper systems to high-strength materials, enables designers to create higher and higher building structures. This trend also develops into designing super-slender structures, when most advanced towers are defined by the ratio between a building’s height and its smallest width: so a 300 m tower that is 30 m at its narrowest point would have the slenderness ratio of 10:1. Structural team at WSP | Parsons Brincerhoff in New York works on 111 West 57th Street building, which has a mindboggling height-to-width ratio of 24:1. Building’s slenderness has critical influence on its technical solutions such as smaller technical thickness of beams or mechanical systems.

22 Bishopsgate, London

As a part of international company we have abillity to consult exceptional cases with experts in New York or London and implement solutions used in some of the highest buildings around the world.

Our projects are created entirely in 3D and coordinated in multidisciplinary team. We work on Polish and British norms and standards, and communication is mainly remote.

Moreover, our structural designers have rich experience in designing high-rise buildings in Poland and abroad, what in combination with access to global knowledge, guarantees most accurate solutions.

The validity of our solutions and their underlying economics are the two most important elements for us when creating a structural design.

WSP projects are developed based on international experience of our experts, who hold Polish, British and Irish licenses. Thanks to this, where relevant, we propose solutions applied with success in other countries, rather than those traditional and repeated on the local market. Moreover, the international experience allows us to design e.g. high-rise, slender buildings and composite slabs or propose daring structures on sites with difficult conditions (such as e.g. above tunnels or in vibration zones).

The competence to develop projects using BIM approach and the experience in multidisciplinary coordination give us flexibility and certainty in quick implementation of changes in the model. Each project is managed by a Project Leader, who controls project works and information exchange. This person is also responsible for issuing documentation and coordinates design process and changes’ implementation.

CALCULATIONS

WSP in Poland is providing structural engineering services to this century old residential building located in London prestigious quarter, over the Piccadilly Underground line. The building is characterized by the heritage-listed façade in red brick and stone dressings. The complete internal structure will be rebuilt, underground level deepened by one additional level and the upper storeys will be rebuilt as reinforced and steel construction (two highest levels). The roof overlap with chimneys is also heritagelisted, therefore they will be reconstructed in the same form. Due to underground rail tracks it is necessary to incorporate anti-vibration inserts across all structural elements. Because of architectural requirements, isolation has been added below the ceiling over the ground level.

The new structure will comprise of two underground and six upper storeys. The combination of new and refurbished spaces will provide 6,000 m2 of residential, 2950 m2 of retail and 2700 m2 of office facilities.

Due to limitations associated with historical character of the building, existing surrounding buildings as well as high quality of designed spaces, the project required strict coordination between all disciplines: structural, building services, architectural, interior designers and conservator. Therefore, BIM has been introduced on early project stage. It will help not only during the design and construction, but will also be used for building management during use phase.

22 BISHOPSGATE

WSP in Poland is engaged in prestigious office high rise development project, located in the London City. 22 Bishopsgate will form part of high rise cluster in that part of the city. In 2011 construction of Pinnacle, previously designed to be developed in the area, has been stopped. New design is considering buildings established in the district since 2011 as i.e. the adjacent Leadenhall. The aim of new project is to create a building, which will offer more than just an office space: it will integrate the areas shared by tenants, there will be an open viewing terrace, as well as restaurant and bar on higher levels.

Our team cooperated with London specialists on demolition plan and concept design for the new Client. Based on recovered documentation of Pinnacle, the team developed basement model and prepared plan aimed at adapting existing structural elements to the new project. Using i.e. existing piles located under the structure will save cost, even though the building core had to be demolished. Our experts took also part in the design of 62-storeys, above ground structure. Being in contact with the teams in London and using analytical models, they created BIM model and were engaged in coordination with building systems design teams in London.

WWAA envisioned creation of a building complex supplying 133 apartments with an area between 40 and 100 m2 each with ground floor dedicated for retail. The basement will serve an underground parking with independent parking platforms. The architectural concept conceives also roof terraces, floor gardens and urban farming around the buildings. The roof terraces will be accessible via external staircases.

WSP team is providing structural design as well as mechanical and electrical systems’ design.

The structure has been designed as reinforced concrete with beamless, flat roofs, columns and walls. The external walls and internal dividing walls between apartments will be made of blockwork.

The use of independent parking platforms required the design of underground storey of much greater height than conventional founded on complex soil conditions with groundwater table level high above the foundation level.

The static-strength analysis has been conducted in Autodesk Robot Structural Analysis® and RAM Concept software, 3D model have been prepared in Autodesk Revit®.

MODEL ON EARLY STAGE

20 Construction stage: December 2015

A seven storey, high quality residential building will be developed on Marylebone Lane, with roof terraces and two basement levels, incorporating a pool. Lobby will connect main entrance and courtyard garden, opening green landscape to the street.

Structure of the building comprises of concrete frame with reinforced concrete elements in the basement and walls as well as posttensioned prestressed concrete on higher levels. The structural design corresponds with the architectural concept: columns are mainly located along the building’s perimeter, as architecture implied locating them in the façade’s structure.

Our team was engaged in calculations and preparation of 3D model. The calculations’ verification indicated issues associated with i.e. ground water pressure, influence of the development on existing metro stations, applied loads or slabs deflection.
