Article abstractFor Touraine, conflict engenders change within a field of historicity; therefore,it can not produce the passage from one type of society to another. At the verymost it can produce only the conditions for such a transformation. However,according to Touraine, only by recognizing the primacy of structural analysiscan one avoid the deterioration of the study of social change into philosophy ofhistory. The relationship of concepts dependent on synchronie and diachronicanalyses is therefore central to his analysis. In this critical essay, an effort ismade to determine the way in which Touraine succeeds in bringing these twoorders of concepts together in his analyses of colonial domination and ofdependency.
