7a and 7b Aylesbury Road

Local Note Pair of houses, similar in form and style to 7 Aylesbury Road. These buildings are an important element of the streetscape, forming part of the continuous building line on Aylesbury Road, and are important in views along the street, which are framed by the buildings lining either side.

Grade II

House. C16 or C17, timber frame on brick plinth with painted brick infill to lower part, plaster infill to oversailing upper floor. Old tile roof, chimney to LH end. Two 2-light and one 3-light 1st floor casements, the latter with leaded glazing. 4 flush panel door to centre of ground floor, approached by 4 steps, square bay window to LH and 2-light bay window at junction with No. 11 on RH.

Restaurant. C18 front to older building. Red and blue brick with red brick dressings, old tiled roof with brick chimney at RH end. Moulded eaves cornice. 2-storeys. Four 2-light leaded casements to 1st floor; C20 half-glazed door. Two 2-light leaded casements with segmental arched heads to LH, early C19 flat roofed canted bay window with barred sashes to RH. House. Late C18. Red brick, tiled roof with chimney to LH end, dentil eaves. 2-storeys, plinth, 3 bays of sash windows (outer 4 panes wide, centre 3 panes) with architrave frames and slightly cambered arches. 6-panel central door (2 upper panels glazed) in doorcase with entablature breaking forward over pilasters and simple cornice.

8 Woods Place (off Aylesbury Road)

C18 house

Local Note A visually important 18th century building at the entrance to Woods Place. The symmetrical polite frontage of the building, with a pair of sash windows either side of the central front door and two further sashes at first floor either side of a narrow central window, is typical of buildings of this age. This building is an important element of the streetscape, forming part of the continuous building line on Aylesbury Road, and is important in views along the street, which are framed by the buildings lining either side.

House. Early C18 incorporating C17 rear part. Red and blue brick with red brick dressings, plinth. Old tile roof, small brick chimney to LH of centre, painted dentil brick cornice. 2-storeys, front has 8 bays of 3 pane sash windows in flush frames, most with thick glazing bars, 1st floor with segmental arches, ground floor cambered arches. 6 moulded panel door in 3rd bay from RH with moulded architrave and doorcase of fluted Doric pilasters, modillion cornice and pediment. LH gable wall under carriage arch to LH (see No.24) has exposed timber framing to lower part. Central gabled rear wing has old brick and timbers to gable. Rendered block to LH of rear elevation has 2 upper sashes in architrave surrounds and 1/2-glazed door with thin glazing bars. C19 wing to RH. Interior entrance hall has wide shallow arch to stair hall. Staircase C18 with decorative tread ends. RH room has C17 style panelling with fluted frieze, moulded cornice, panelled beam, carved wood chimneypiece with panelled over-mantel and dentil cornice; flanking cupboards with arched tops, shaped shelves, gothic pattern glazed doors, keyblocks and dentil cornices; spandrels and central panel have strapwork motifs. LH room has C18 panelling carved wood chimneypiece with enriched frieze, central head and cornice; overmantel with garlands and blank shield. 2 overdoors with garlands and putti. Far LH room has carved wood chimneypiece, shouldered and eared overmantel panel, arched corner cupboard, moulded cornice and panelled beam. Rear room and kitchen have C17 posts and beams exposed. One 1st floor room has dentil cornice.

23 & 25 Aylesbury Road

Shop and house. C17 timber framed re-fronted C18 in brick, now painted. Old tile roof, large brick chimney on ridge between Nos. 23 and 25. 2-storeys, 4 bay front, tripartite sash windows in architrave frames except 3rd bay from LH which has 3-pane wide sash. Ground floor has similar tripartite sash under segmental arch, 6 panel door to RH with old hood on cut brackets, modern 2 small paned shop windows to LH, flanking modern 1/2 glazed door with small hood on cut brackets. High carriage arch to LH bay with sash window above project slightly and have dentil eaves similar to No. 21 adjoining

Old tiled roof, old central chimney with 2 diamond shafts, later chimney to RH end. 2-storeys, gable to LH, 4 bay front of 3-light sash windows, 1-light above door in 2nd bay from LH, deeply recessed with wide architrave. Rear wing has exposed timber framing and oversailing upper floor.

28 Aylesbury Road, Sturrick House with 26A Cherry Cottage

House and attached cottage. C16 altered, Timber frame with painted roughcast to upper part, painted brick to under-built ground floor. Old tile roof half hipped to RH, 2 storeys, the upper one formerly over- sailing. Two 3-light and two 2-light leaded casements to 1st floor. C19 1/2-glazed door to LH of centre with 2 sash windows in flush frames each side. Wide carriage way with wooden doors to RH of centre, with heavy moulded bracket to RH side. Modern door and small window in RH part now formed into separate cottage. Rear elevation: C17 timber framed 2-storey wing with brick infill, old tiled roof, sash window to 1st floor, modern glazed doors below. Chimney stack to RH flank, 1-storey outshot on right with catslide tiled roof, modern casement. Lean-to roofed cellar outshot on extreme right, 2-light casement above. Interior Ground floor RH room has two richly moulded ceiling beams and large inglenook with moulded beam in form of shallow Tudor arch. LH room has altered inglenook, exposed beams, including close-studding to rear wall. 1st floor has more close-studding and large tiebeams exposed. Rear wing has reused C17 oak run-through panelling on both floors.

LH part of front symmetrical with 2 pairs of sash windows in architrave frames with flat gauged brick arches flanking central upper panel above 8-panel door, 2 upper glazed, in architrave frame with flat moulded hood on cut brackets. Large carriage way on RH side with segmental arch, 1 small sash above in altered opening. 1 bay of sash windows to LH with dated rainwater head to LH . Rear elevation has low wing to LH adjoining carriage arch. C16 timber framed with brick infill, old tiled roof. Large brick stack on gable end with battered sides and tiled offset. 1- storey wing projects, part timber stud with brick; tiled roof, Large wing to RH, formerly a schoolroom, brick below, tile hanging above. Old tile roof with hipped end. 2 bays of 3-light casements, one 3-light upper casement to end with modern glazed door below. Interior heavy timber framing to smaller rear wing with cambered tiebeams and curved windbraces. Some exposed C17 framing to front block; Ground floor LH room has plain C18 panelling, and door, stone fireplace surround with flanking shaped cupboards, moulded cornice and panelled beam soffit. RH room has bolection moulded wood chimneypiece and plain panelling to lower wall.

Grade II

Small house and cottage. C15 and C17, timber framed refronted in brick in C18. No. 34A partly rebuilt. Old tile roof, brick chimney to centre of No. 32. 2 storeys. 4 bay front, No. 34A to LH bay has half glazed door to RH, 3-light casement to LH, and 2-light casement to 1st floor, all with wood lintels. No. 32 has chequer pattern brick, 1st floor band of red and blue bricks. Initials L and M flanking a reversed N in centre of 1st floor above 4 panel half glazed door. 2-light casement to LH, 3-light to RH, two 2- light casements to 1st floor. RH bay has carriage door with wood lintel and above to LH a circular plaster plaque. Interior 3 cruck trusses with blades terminating under cambered collars.

House. C17 (said to be 1605 on deed) with possibly earlier fabric at N. end, timber framed, refronted and cased in brick in early C18. Chequer brick with red brick dressings to front. Old tile roof with large chimney to RH of centre with 6 octagonal shafts. Bracketted wood cornice. 2-storeys. 7 bay front with carriage arch to RH with 2-light casement over. Other windows early C18 sashes with thick glazing bars, segmental arched heads. 6 panel door, top panels glazed, in 3rd bay from RH with architrave, bold cut brackets and flat hood. Timber frame exposed in RH flank wall under carriageway. Rear wall of flint and brick with two 3-light 1st floor casements with leaded glazing. Timber framing of former N crosswing, which has chimney with 4 octagonal shafts. Interior Heavy timbers of central truss of N. crosswing has jowled posts, cambered tiebeam and queenposts in attic. Chamfered C17 spinebeams, several C17 panelled doors and decorated cupboard door in 1st floor N. room. C18 brick fireplace arch in ground floor S. room, C18 decorated corner cupboard in ground floor central room.

46 Aylesbury Road, The Grange and front garden wall

House. C18 front, altered, to older building, probably of C17 date. Chequer pattern brick, formerly colourwashed, Old tile roof, hipped at right hand end, with 2 gabled dormers. Large central brick chimney with black brick quoins and shafts; parapet, moulded wood cornice. 2-storeys and attic, first floor band. Central part has two 3-light casements to ground floor with brick arches, old leaded glazing. Half-glazed double doors with pediment hood on cut brackets. Two 4-light mullioned and transomed casements to first floor, with 2-light window above door. One bay extension on left hand. Lower extension on right hand, rendered, with doorway at junction having tall 6-panel door with radiating and wreathed lead fan-light in panelled reveal, Doric portico of 2 columns, 2 pilasters and entablature with dentil cornice. Large modern canted bay window on right. Flank elevation with 2 blank arches containing triple sash windows with panelled mullions and cornice. Garden elevation has canted bay on left with 3 double-wing sash windows, the central one having panels below the cill. Interior: front right-hand room has fine late C18 carved wood chimney piece, moulded plaster cornice, panelled doors. Boundary wall, C18 flint and brick, about lm high with half-round brick coping.

1 & 2 Back Street, Old Corner House and Old Coach House

C18 3 houses (formerly hotel)

Grade II

Three houses, formerly hotel, fronting Aylesbury Road. C18, brick with gauged brick aches, some with soffits cut in ornamental patterns. Old tile roof hipped at corner, brick chimneys, moulded wood eaves. 2 storeys on high plinth, former attic (dormers removed 1975).Front of 5 wide bays each containing 2 windows, separated by narrow brick recesses, except central bay which has wide carriage arch now filled in with window to ground floor, below 1st floor window flanked by 2 narrow brick recesses. Door with stone steps between 1st and 2nd bays from LH. Ground floor sashes have architrave frames and moulded brick cornices above arches. 1st floor sashes 4 panes wide in reveals. Flank elevation to Back Street has 1 bay with pair of blank windows. Rear elevation restored 1976.

Chandos House, Back Street

C19 House

Local Note This important 19th century house, now used as offices, is a good example of polite architecture in Wendover. The building is of architectural and historic interest and is important in views along Back Street. The building has been extended to the west in recent years. These extensions are set back from the road edge and are not of any particular local note.

Vine Tree Hotel

C16 or C17 hotel (former farmhouse)

Grade II

Hotel, formerly farmhouse. C16 or C17, timber framed, refronted in brick C18. Half-hipped old tiled roof with central chimney, panelled parapet. 2 storeys and attic, stone floor bands cut back, quoins replaced in brick. 6 bay front, with two 1st floor and one ground floor blank windows. Flat gauged brick arches with stone keyblocks. 4 sashes in flush frames to 1st floor, 4 to ground floor, the 2 flanking door to RH tripartite windows. Wide 6-panel door in 2nd bay from RH in wooden doorcase with panelled frieze, bold cut brackets and flat moulded hood, approached by 4 stone steps. Central lead rainwater pipe with shaped head. Flank elevation has exposed timber framing with brick infill and 3-light attic casement.

15 Back Street, Summer Cottage

Local Note Late 18th/ early 19th century terraced cottage. Timber, 8 over 8 sash window to left of door with similar sash above. The building is of architectural and historic interest. Decorative brick lintels are in a pale stock brick. Steps up from the street level to the front door are a characteristic feature of Back Street. Visually the building forms part of the continuous building frontage of Back Street, framing glimpsed and unfolding views along the street.

13 Back Street, Autumn Cottage

Late C18/C19 terraced cottage

Local Note Late 18th/ early 19th century terraced cottage. Original windows have been replaced with uPVC casements. The stable door to the left hand side of the building frontage leads to a narrow passage providing access to the rear of the plot. The building is of some architectural and historic interest. Decorative brick lintels indicate the original position of the ground floor windows and are in a pale stock brick. Visually the building forms part of the continuous building frontage of Back Street, framing glimpsed and unfolding views along the street.

11 Back Street, White Cottage

C18 terraced cottage

Local Note 18th century terraced cottage. Timber casement windows to left of door with similar above. The building is of architectural and historic interest. The building has been painted, but the brickwork is visible beneath. Steps up from the street level to the front door are a characteristic feature of Back Street. Visually the building forms part of the continuous building frontage of Back Street, framing glimpsed and unfolding views along the street.

9 Back Street, Pear Tree Cottage

Late C17/C18 terraced cottage

Local Note Late 17th / 18th century terraced cottage. Leaded casement windows and central door to left of door with similar leaded windows to end gable. The front of the building has been rendered, as has a plinth on the side gable elevation. The remainder of the side gable is of timber frame a brick construction. The building is of architectural and historic interest. Steps up from the street level to the front door are a characteristic feature of Back Street. Visually the building forms part of the continuous building frontage of Back Street, framing glimpsed and unfolding views along the street.

1a and 1 to 4 Chandos Place

Terrace of C19 cottages

Local Note Terrace of 19th century cottages. Casements windows – some original timber, others more recent replacements. Some of the cottages are decorated with window boxes. The cottages are of some architectural and historic interest, representing the 19th century expansion of Wendover following the arrival of the canal and railway. Decorative brick lintels are of the same brick as the facades. The buildings are glimpsed from Back Street, stretching back at 90 degrees from the street.

Parish Church of St Mary, Church Lane

C14 church

Grade II

Parish church. C14 restored 1839 and in 1869 by Street. Flint rubble with random blocks of stone, ashlar stone dressings – older work in church, restoration in limestone. Tiled roofs except for lead on nave aisles. Nave, aisles, chancel with C19 vestry on N., chapel on S.; embattled west tower with small "spike"; traceried belfry windows, small lancet with shafts to mid-stage of N. side; stair turret on S. side and heavy buttresses. Traceried windows, many restored. C19 south porch, containing C14 door-way with ball flower ornament. Oak north porch. Local Note House, 18th century. Gable end onto street. Polite frontage with 8 over 8 timber sash windows. The rear wing, which runs parallel to the street, has casement windows with arched brick lintels and a brick plinth. The building is of architectural and historic interest, and forms a group with the adjacent Paradise House. The building is visually important in views from the south along Hale Road, and the rear wing frames views along the street in both directions.

Garden (W) elevation has narrow gable to LH with dentil verge small panel in tympanum, 4- light window with moulded head to 1st floor, 4-light transomed window to ground floor. Local Note A building of some local associative significance. The building is an example of late 1960s architecture and was constructed by a local architect. The building is greatly valued by the local residents.

Local Note A small 19th century cottage. The building is built in a highly decorative arts and crafts style, evocative of the estate buildings found in nearby settlements such as Waddesdon. The building has decorative carved timber gables, highly ornate brick chimneys, decorative club tiles on the roof and closely leaded casement windows with mullions and transoms. The building is of clear architectural and historic interest, and is unusual in its design within the context of Wendover. The cottage is visually important, being prominent in views along Church Lane and Hale Road.

North Cottage/Weir Cottage, Heron Path

Local Note Decorative cottage, situated on the weir of the Wendover Arm feeder stream adjacent to the Heron Path. The cottage is built in brick, with timber casement windows, a decorative projecting porch with tile hanging and a visually prominent chimney with terracotta pots. The building has had a number of small scale additions and extensions over the years. The building is of some architectural and historic interest, and is important in views along the Heron Path and across Rope Walk Meadow.

Steeply pitched tiled roofs with ridge cresting. Lead covered spirelet set diagonally on N.W. range. Tall brick chimney stacks rise through eaves, 2 stacks in valleys. 1 and 2 storeys, each main gable has 4-light mullioned and transomed window at upper level, tiled roof lean-to additions below. Side walls have mullioned and transomed windows in bays divided by buttresses. S block has mosaic date plaque on it, side. N. block has gabled projections at S. end both sides and dormers in angle with tall window rising through eaves. Converted to form houses 1976, leaving parts of interior open to roof.

INTERIOR: Ground floor: front rooms, now one, have large fireplaces; 2 posts at right end have remnants of painting. INTERIOR: Ground floor: chamfered beams; right-hand room has rebuilt fireplace and C17 panelling re-located from left-hand 1st floor room. 1st floor: left room has fragments of wall painting of 3rd quarter of C16 in date. The front façade has been imposed on a much earlier building. This imposition of a later façade is common within Wendover, but Number 28 is the most obvious case. When standing to the east of the building, on Back Street, the second floor gabled façade is clearly distinguishable from the underlying building, which runs parallel to the street. The building is prominent in views across Manor Waste.

War Memorial

War Memorial. 1922, designed by Gerard Cogswell. Chilmark stone. The memorial comprises an octagonal base of red brick with stone quoins, with a triple-stepped superstructure supporting a square pedestal with projecting corners in the manner of a chest tomb. Above is a tall, tapering octagonal shaft bearing an open shrine at the top, with crocketed finials to the corners and a cruciform finial above.

HISTORY: the war memorial was proposed by Major Edwin Smith, Lord of the Manor, who gave a site on the Manor Waste for this purpose. Designed by Cogswell, a London architect, it took the form of a medieval wayside cross of the sort recently treated in Aymer Vallance's book 'Old Crosses and Lychgates' (1920). Carved by Gething & Co of Salisbury at a cost of £278, it was unveiled by the Marchioness of Lincolnshire, wife of the Lord Lieutenant, whose son had fallen at 2nd Ypres. Listed for its historic interest as well as its visual quality.

Old tile roof, large brick chimney to LH of centre, another to RH of rear roofslope, 2-storeys, front has 3 bays of tripartite sash windows. Central 6 panel door, 2 upper panels glazed, in reeded architrave surround. RH gable has oversailing upper floor, tile hanging to gable, 3-light leaded casement to ground and 1st floors. LH gable has 1st floor band, half glazed door, 3-light leaded casement to 1st floor. Two rear wings, that on the west side timberframe and brick, rendered, old tile roof with chimney at gable end, 2 bays of casements, some leaded. Eastern rear wing probably C19, brick, rendered, old tile roof with end stack, corbelled brick eaves, 2 bays of sash windows.

North gable of this building has timber framing and brick, door at upper level, door and small window to ground floor. Interior North east wing has one complete bay and two trusses of the C15 hall. Principle timbers have hollow moulded chamfers. West truss is fully arch-braced, east truss altered. One complete bay of delicate wind bracing forming gothic arches. Ground floor room has richly moulded C16 cross beams to ceiling. Late C17/early C18 staircase in west range with closed string and twisted balusters. One 1st floor chimneypiece and some old doors also of this period. Outbuilding attached to south-east corner has heavy close-set floor joists.
