O Little Town Of Bethlehem There is a Christmas song that says of Bethlehem:
"Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light." Bethlehem is a suburb of Jerusalem. Its main tourist attraction in the time of Jesus was that it was the birth-place of David. Though today it has many modern homes and buildings, you can still see that it is part of "the hill country. . .of Judah." (Lk 1:39) It is not too far from En Kerem, where John the Baptist was born, and apparently where today's Gospel takes place.
We see in the Gospel reading today how Elizabeth and her unborn child rejoiced at the news of Jesus' coming birth. The story implies that Mary went to see Elizabeth as soon as the angel told her about Jesus. Maybe it was easier to tell her cousin, who was also with child, than her fiancé. I would think that talking about it made this miracle more real. I know that talk-ing about my faith makes it more real to me.
Jesus is the "everlasting Light" mentioned in the song. That light shines today, not just in Bethlehem, but everywhere that His followers bring it. When we console someone who is mourning, that light shines. When we offer to help someone in need, it shines brighter. When we forgive someone who hurt us, the light is burning. When we offer to sponsor a candidate in the RCIA, the light grows. When we teach a child how to pray, it shines even brighter.
Our dark streets need the everlasting Light today as much as they did 2000 years ago. Today we remem-ber how Mary and Elizabeth shared their faith in God. They did so much like we do today. Mary could not see her unborn son yet, but helped Elizabeth to believe by her words. Jesus, who seems to be invisible today, is seen in the shared faith of those who bring Him into the world by their words and actions. Tom Schmidt
Offertory Giving As we draw close to the great Feast of the Nativ-
ity, we hear the bold stewardship proclamation twice in today’s second reading from the Letter to the He-brews: “Behold, I come to do your will, O God!” Who is this Jesus? Who are we that we should fol-low Him? Many want Him as a friend, a guide, a king, an advocate. We long to see the face of God. Jesus reveals the nature of God, the servant sent to give us new life in Him. Take time to ponder: Do we have the courage to follow Jesus? To show others the face of God? To say to the Lord: “Behold, I come to do your will?”

2018 Church Donations Tax Statement Will you need a statement of 2018 contributions
to the church for income tax purposes? If so, please call the Church Office at 863-7935 and request yours. Since not everyone has a need for a state-ment, we do not automatically mail one. The excep-tion would be those who issued a check in an amount $250.00 or over, as we are mandated by the IRS to issue a statement in those cases. Those who call will have their names put on a list, and a state-ment prepared as soon as possible after the new year. Our bookkeeper hopes to have these ready for mailing or pick-up (please state your choice) by the end of January.
*Please Note: To be included on 2018 contri-bution statements, all contributions to the church must be DATED and RECEIVED no later than December 30, 2018.
This is important in order to comply with IRS regulations, as the Church Office will be closed De-cember 31 and January 1.

Treasures From Our Tradition In ancient pagan Rome, these days in mid-
December were a time for general slacking off at work and far too much rejoicing. The period of lei-sure after the harvest and a whole cluster of pagan festivals were a force for the church to handle. The Saturnalia, breaking out on December 17, was a time of high living and loose morals. Christians were ad-vised by their bishops to drop out of the mayhem and do some serious fasting. A famous church coun-cil at Saragossa in Spain made a season of fasting mandatory from December 17 to December 23, ex-actly coinciding with the Saturnalia. The bishops at that time were perhaps less concerned with preparing for Christmas than with resisting the kind of loose living happening.
Modern times have restored a bit of the Saturna-lia spirit to our culture, so that a general period of partying with a vague connection to religion is now upon us. How does a Christian keep balance? The practice of charity by remembering the poor in our gift-giving, of hospitality in finding a place at our holiday tables for the poor and lonely, and of daily prayer in the home and at church are great helps. Although Advent is not a penitential season like Lent, it is a time for making room in our lives for what matters most. James Field
From Scandal To Honor The meeting of Mary and
Elizabeth follows a strong tradi-tion of women in their culture, to come together to support each other during pregnancy. Mary likely carried a shadow of scandal in her pregnancy, since it began before her marriage. Elizabeth, having carried her own burden of social disapproval after many years without children, sees only cause for celebration. Elizabeth sees beyond the social shame of Mary's situation to observe how God is working, and how Mary has accepted joining in this work.
Unlike Elizabeth's husband Zechariah, who thought it unbelievable that God could bring them a son, Mary believed the angel’s message. Elizabeth honors Mary, in part, for simply being able to imag-ine that God could do this extraordinary thing through her. Perhaps God had been preparing Mary's heart throughout her young life, so that she could be
fully receptive to God’s specific call when the time was right. Mary opened herself to an uncertain fu-ture, trusting that God would accompany her in the joys and sorrows of being the mother of Jesus.
St. Charbel Makhlouf—December 24 Joseph Makhlouf was
born in 1828 at Beqa-Kafra, Lebanon. His peas-ant family lived a strong faith, were attentive to the Divine Liturgy, and had a great devotion to the Moth-er of God.
At the age of twenty-three, Charbel left his lov-ing and closely knit family to enter the Lebanese-Maronite Monastery called Notre-Dame de May-fouk. Following studies and perpetual profession at St. Cyprian de Kfifane Monaster, he was ordained in 1859.
For the next seven years, Charbel lived in the mountainous community of d’Anaya. After that he spend the next twenty-three years in complete soli-tude at Sts. Peter and Paul Hermitage near d’Anaya. He died there on Christmas Eve, 1898.
Charbel had a reputation for his austerity, pen-ances, obedience and Chasity. At times, Charbel was gifted with levitations during prayer, and he had great devotion to the Most Blessed Sacrament.
In all things, Charbel maintained perfect sereni-ty. He was beatified in 1965 by Pope Paul VI and canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1977.
St. Fabiola—December 27 Fabiola was born in the fourth
century to the noble Fabia family of Rome, Italy. Early in life, she was a follower of St. Jerome, but she fell away from the church.
Faiola divorced her first hus-band because of his ribald life-style, and she remarried. When her second husband died, she once again accepted her Christian obligations and re-turned to the Church and her support of St. Jerome.
Fabiola was noted for her charitable works, in-cluding the establishment of the first Christian public hospital in the West, where she waited on the pa-tients. Later, she opened a hospice for poor and sick pilgrims at Porto. She died in the year 399.
