From the Pastor

Dear Brothers and Sisters, This Sunday we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph in the Ordinary Form of the Mass. As we all know the modern Christian family has many challenges to confront in order to stay intact and in order to be a place of prayer and holiness. The Holy Family of Nazareth lived in a very small house and made it a dwelling of love and peace. The Church desires that each of our families also lives in harmony and peace. We are called to forgive one another and maintain unity and respect for each other. Husbands and wives should give to their children an example of these and all the Christian virtues. Even though the modern secular world is often hostile to Christian values we are nonetheless called upon to continue living our lives in families that are like “domestic churches.” May we each make a commitment in the New Year to live with greater love and peace within our own families and may this Jubilee Year of Mercy be truly a time to show mercy to one an-other as well as remember the great mercy that God has shown us in sending His Son as our Re-deemer. Happy New Year to each of you. This coming Friday begins the New Year of 2016!! Our Masses on Friday are as follows: 9:00 a.m. English Mass, 10:30 a.m. Latin sung Mass, and 7:00 p.m. Spanish Mass. The new Year begins with the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God and is a Holy Day of Obligation. It is the Octave Day of the Nativity of the Lord and the World Day of Prayer for Peace. And on New Year’s Day we also celebrate the First Friday of the month and so will have all night adoration following the evening Spanish Mass. All are invited to spend some time with our Eucharistic Lord in adoration and in repa-ration for the sins committed against the Sacred hearts of Jesus and Mary. The adoration lasts until 8:00 a.m. on Saturday at which time the Blessed Sacrament will be reposed. At 8:30 a.m. there will

December 27, 2015

be an English Mass in honor of the Immaculate heart of Mary as we do each Saturday in order to comply with the request of Our Lady of Fatima. There will also be a Latin Mass at noon on Satur-day immediately following the servers’ practice. The Hispanic community at Sts. Peter and Paul is invited to participate in a retreat that will begin on Friday, January 1st with the 7:00 p.m. Mass and that will continue on Saturday, January 2nd all day. This retreat is not only for those involved in vari-ous groups but is really open to anyone who would like to begin the New Year in a prayerful way. A social at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday will end the retreat. Father Oscar Mendoza will be leaving on Sunday, January 3rd for Peru and will be going to another Diocese to serve as a priest. We will certainly miss him as he has been an invaluable help to our com-munity during the time that he was assigned to our parish. We already had a going away party for him but if you should happen to see him this week you might wish him well in his going forth from us. I am not sure who will be replacing him but should know something soon, I would think. God bless you as we finish this year and prepare to enter into a New Year. May the Lord and the Gen-tle Virgin Mary always accompany you and your family on your pilgrimage of life until time ceases and you enter into eternity. Sincerely yours, Father Timothy Davison Remember that God prefers the poverty of our hearts to the most sublime thoughts borrowed from others. St. Peter Julian Eymard

Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation: God is Rich in Mercy The Three Acts Needed for a Good Confession 1. Contrition This involves regret for the sins committed and the resolution no to do them again. The peni-tent will need to prayerfully examine his or her conscience. Our motives for sorrow should arise from our faith in Christ. The following Act of Contrition expresses in prayer what “contrition” means: My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ Suffered and died for us. In his name, my God, have mercy. Amen Rite of Penance Rev. Alfred McBride, O. Praem Copyright Our Sunday Visitor Ordination to the Diaconate-December 28th Seminarian Michael Hopper will be or-dained to the diaconate by Bishop Slattery on Monday evening, December 28th at 6:00 p.m. at Holy Family Cathedral. A reception will follow Mass in the Cathedral parish hall. Michael, a pa-rishioner of the Cathedral, has finished his theo-logical studies at Sacred Heart Seminary, Hales Corner, Wisconsin, and hopes to be ordained to the priesthood with Deacon Sean O’Brien on July 16th of next year. Everyone in the Diocese is in-vited to participate in this beautiful ordination Mass.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION This New Year’s Eve, at the turning of the year, you may catch a glimpse of the old year, a cartoon figure of a hunched old man with a sickle, Father Time. Where else but in this column could you learn that this is in fact a pope? December 31 was in the old calendar the feast of St. Sylvester. Legend says that Sylvester healed the Emperor Constantine of leprosy, and presided at the liturgy of baptism for the grateful emperor. In 314, he was chosen pope, and it fell to him to organize the peacetime church, free at last from persecution. He founded the Lateran Basilica, the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome. In northern Europe “Sylvester Night” is a time of great parties with eating, dancing, and singing—recalling perhaps the joy of the church in the fresh air of Sylvester’s papacy. In Poland, there was great fear as the year 1000 approached that an im-mense dragon would devour the earth and set fire to the heavens. The people prayed earnestly to St. Sylvester, trusting that the saint would not permit such suffering on his feast day. They’ve been cele-brating ever since! Many New Year’s customs have pagan roots, like the British “First Footer” tradition. The idea is that the first person setting foot into your house in the new year determines the luck for the year ahead. The ideal first footer was not a bit like old Pope Sylvester, but rather a tall, dark-haired man carrying the right gift. A handsome first footer meant the year ahead would be pleasant, and if he carried bread or a shovel of coal there would be food and warmth in the future. Who will be your household’s first footer? —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

FAMILY LIFE Family life is sacred, but it is not without trial. Perhaps this is the most important message we can glean from today’s readings. If Jesus, Mary,

and Joseph can trip up sometimes—can discon-nect—then we shouldn’t find it surprising when such things happen to us as well. And parents eve-rywhere (children, too) can probably relate to—and take some solace in—the Gospel’s account of Mary and Joseph after Jesus explained why he stayed behind in the temple. They heard his words, Luke tells us, “But they did not understand what he said to them” (Luke 2:50). Amen! Neverthe-less, Jesus does go back home with them, and con-tinues to thrive under their care.

Sinceramente, Padre Timothy Davison
