If you can’t find the latest announcement, please email Tina-Marie Lesko or [email protected] for your member ID.

Renewing your SCC registration is moving online. We will have detailed instructions at caliscc.org on how to easily renew your membership by credit card. We’re going head-to-head with other chapters for an early renewal contest. I’d love to win! Keep your eyes peeled for an email in the coming weeks on step-by-step instructions on how to renew.

Our biennial scientific seminar is around the corner in October. There is a host of exciting speakers that will bring us the latest industry trends. Registration is open online. Our Scientific

Seminar Chairs have done a fantastic job coordinating this event.

This is our last meeting at Manhattan Beach in 2016. The October and November meetings will be held in the San Fernando Valley. Surely the weather will be beautiful for this occasion. After hearing the latest celebrity tactics in anti-aging, members can take part in a live virtual reality demonstration before dinner. Just tell the registration desk you’re interested, as availability to participate in the pre-dinner demonstration is limited.

Looking forward to seeing all of you at the September meeting! Valerie George

Historian ColumnTHE HISTORY OF THE CHAPTER MERIT AWARD

As most of you are aware, every year the board has the option to present a member with the prestigious Chapter Merit Award. The Award goes to someone who has gone “above and beyond” in their voluntary service to the chapter, either in that current year or over time. This award is a National SCC award, given out by each chapter. The award does not have to be issued every year if no person is nominated.

The Chapter Merit Award originated in 1979 as “The Good Guy Award”. It was established that year in memory of David J. Warner. David J. Warner was a California Chapter SCC Member who tragically died in a car accident in 1979. He was one of the “good guys” and served our Chapter selflessly.

The National SCC saw that the “Good Guy Award” was a great way to recognize outstanding service and adopted the national version of the award in 1995, which is now called The Chapter Merit Award.

The California Chapter of the SCC has been a trend-setter in many ways throughout the years but perhaps you didn’t know that it was our Chapter that was behind the creation of the Chapter Merit Award!

The following CA SCC Members have received this award:

1995 - Tracey Gedney

1996 - Deborah Pierce

1997 - Don Katz

1998 - Guy Langer

1999 - Brad Rope

2000 - John Garruto

2002 - Bret Katz

2006 - Dr. Don Orth

2007 - Karen Chun

2008 - Lee Paler

2011 - No recipient

2012 - Liz Streland

2013 - John Luna

2014 - Brian Kolevar

Feature ArticleCALIFORNIA CHAPTER SCC STEM OUTREACH

The California Chapter of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists partnered with AAUW’s Tech Trek Science Camp program at Whittier College to give seventh graders the opportunity to be cosmetic chemists. On June 29, 2016, California Chapter Chair Valerie George and Area III Director Liz Streland spent the afternoon with eighty-five enthusiastic young ladies guiding them through the process of making a lotion. Each session started with a discussion about the importance of safety as each student was provided safety glasses and gloves. Students then learned about emulsion chemistry and all of the decisions that go into making products. After choosing their fragrances, participants named their products and designed their own labels. Thanks to Angie Inouye for introducing our chapter to Tech Trek.

The California Chapter has been conducting STEM outreach with various schools and organizations in California since 2013. The Society of Cosmetic Chemists is in the process of formalizing its national STEM program as part of the NextGen mentor program. The SCC’s Future Scientist Initiative will focus on advancing elementary and secondary school outreach. The Future Scientist Initiative committee was formed earlier this year and includes two members from our California Chapter: Janet Blaschke (California Chapter Regulatory Chair) and Liz Streland (Area III Director). Chris Daraska (Midwest Chapter), Alex Breckwoldt (St. Louis Chapter), Joy Roederer (Southwest Chapter), and Steve Herman (New York Chapter) are serving on this committee as well.

We are excited that FSI will be hosting a formulating class for our “youngest scientists” at the IFSCC Congress in Orlando on November 1st. For additional information on this event or any of the NextGen programs, please contact Liz Streland ([email protected]).
