The common practice of

patching and painting

stucco cracks is only a

short term fix. Finestone

offers a longer-lasting

approach to stucco repair.

Although its composition has beenmodified since the 1800’s, stucco hasbeen used as a reliable and durable wallcladding since ancient times.

Like any other cladding, stucco requiresmaintenance. Stucco, by nature, is brittleand has limited ability to tolerate buildingmovement and freeze/thaw cycles. Itcracks. Repair of minor hairline cracks isnot critical or urgent, but as cracksspread and grow, they create potential forseveral undesirable and potentially costlyconditions such as moisture intrusion,damage to the building’s framing, leaksinto the interior, etc.

Repairs Designed to Last

The common practice of patching andpainting stucco cracks is only a shortterm fix. New cracks will appear andpatched cracks will reappear. Paint canalso lose its bond, creating additionalmaintenance challenges.

Finestone offers a longer-lastingapproach to stucco repair. A FinestoneStucco Resurfacing System creates abeautifully colored, textured andreinforced skin over the stucco surface.In addition to covering cracks for wallprotection, its reinforced acrylic base coatand finish are able to resist newcracking.

Benefits include:

• Finestone Stucco ResurfacingSystems are the only approachto repair that truly adds crackresistance over the existingstucco wall;

• They provide a longer lastingapproach to repairs – coloredfinishes are fade – crack – andpeel-resistant. Composed ofacrylic and cement materials, thebase coats are compatible withstucco and will not lose their bond;

• They provide added weatherresistance, protecting even againstwind driven rain;

• With their inherent high water vaporpermeability, they allow the wall tobreathe, a necessity for long termperformance;

• They yield a more uniformappearance; the building looksbetter from the street and the wallslook better close up;

• With their wide adaptability and theireasy integration of shapes, theyexpand design flexibility withsuperior aesthetics, enabling thetotal transformation of a building’sappearance;

• Options allow for the replication ofbrick, cut stone, metal panels,granite, and more.

After

Finestone Stucco Resurfacing Systemsare the smartest approach yet to stuccorepair. Their life cycle cost represents asignificant savings over traditional repairtechniques. Standard repairs most ofteninclude patching holes and cracks withstucco brown coat and finishing withacrylic or elastomeric paint, coloredstucco or other finishing products, orsimply filling cracks with caulk and thenpainting. We do not recommend thesemethods because of their limitationswhich include:

• Acrylic paints do not bridge cracks orhide cracks and therefore should notbe considered repair materials;

• Caulk used for filling cracks has alimited lifetime; eventually it willrequire removal and replacement;

• Repairs to surface cracks using caulkoften “read through” the paint; theyresult in undesirable variations intexture and color over the wallsurface;

• Paints can be incompatible with thecaulk used as crack filler. Out gassingfrom sealants can cause paints to losetheir bond with sealants over time;

• Elastomeric paint must be applied toits designed mil thickness – neithertoo thin nor too thick - to achieveoptimal elongation; they also requiremultiple coats to achieve targetthickness.

The Basics

For most applications over stucco,installation is a two step process thatincludes the following proven Finestoneproducts

A/BC or A/BC 1-StepBoth exhibit a strong tensile bond toprepared stucco. A/BC is comprised ofan acrylic liquid that is mixed at the jobsite with Portland cement. A/BC 1-Step isa powdered version that requires onlymixing with potable water at the job site.
