CLUB DAY 2014

Wednesday, September 17 – Middle School Thursday, September 18 – Upper School

During Cougar Block

All signups in the dining hall

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

The Student Activity Program at Austin has been developed for students who share similar interests and have a variety of skill levels. Each student has the opportunity to join adults and peers with similar interests and participate in positive and rewarding activities within a nurturing environment.

Through meaningful participation in activities, students will have a chance to make new friends, develop their individual talents and express their ideas and enthusiasm with other members of the Austin community.

Student Activities will give students a forum to contribute positively to the school community and realize their own sense of purpose and identity within it. Club participation will enhance a child's educational experiences by providing intellectual, spiritual and recreational stimulation within a social setting.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS The following recommendations have been made regarding Student Activity sponsored clubs: 1. In order to earn credit (recognition on the transcript) for membership in an activity,

students must attend regularly scheduled meetings, as published in this program and announced each day, as well as meet the criteria particular to each activity as determined by the moderator of the activity.

2. Moderators determine which students have met the criteria for membership in activities twice a year, at the end of first semester and at the end of second semester. These records are collected and serve as the basis for the information that is listed on student transcripts and in the permanent records at Austin.

3. Students should only be absent from activity meetings taking place during Cougar Block if they are absent from school or have the prior permission of the activity moderator to be absent from a meeting on a given day. It is the students' responsibility to check activity schedules and read announcements to ensure that they do not make plans that conflict with their activity period obligations.

4. An Intramural sports program, coordinated through Student Activities is available for

students during activity period. The primary goal of the program is to help students develop basic skills in the sport in which they are participating, to understand the variety of team and individual sports available, to learn techniques and strategies for games, and to instill players with confidence and team spirit. Signups will take place during Club Day and individual moderators will assign league placement. They will also schedule all league play and tournament competition.

CLUBS 2014-2015

AFTER SCHOOL ARTS OFFERINGS

ACOUSTIC MUSIC JAM

Moderator: TBD Membership: Grades 6-12 Meeting Time: Wednesdays 2:30 – 3:30 Meeting Place: Band/Chorus Room

2nd Floor of Saint Augustine Hall All experience levels are welcome. Acoustic music jam is for aspiring players/singers who want to make music with others. In a relaxed atmosphere, we will practice simple folk tunes and use them as the basis for “back porch” entertainment – garage band without the computer (or the garage). If you can play at least two chords on a guitar or know any scales on any unplugged instrument, feel free to join us. If you can’t read notes, don’t worry. Folk music is the music of untrained players and singers, passed down from generation to generation, much of it learned by ear. This is about making music for the sheer joy of it. If you are an experienced player, there’s a place for you too. All acoustic instrument players are welcome, as are students who just enjoy singing. AUSTINATO BAND Moderator: Mr. Andrei Sobchenko Membership: Grades 6-12 Meeting Time: Mondays and Thursdays 2:45-3:45 Meeting Place: Band/Chorus Room

There are many solo opportunities available throughout the year. Music will cover a wide variety of styles - from classical through the 20th century.
