Activities:

In this document, we present a report on the activities of the SYSU-SEG student chapter from September 2018 to October 2019.

1. Lectureships

On December 18, 2018, invited by the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Marine Resources and Nearshore Engineering, undertaken by the SEG-SYSU student chapter, Academician Zengqian Hou (Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences), Prof. Hai Cheng, Prof. Shouye Yang, and Prof. Shuji Gao gave lectures in the Sun Yat-sen University.

Academician Zengqian Hou elaborated the scientific frontier and research direction of earth system science from four aspects. Firstly, exploring the deep process of the earth to understand the driving mechanism of the earths o peration. Secondly, accurately depicting the internal structure of the earth and the material cycle is a major scientific frontier. We should reveal the cycle of crust-mantle material to understand the laws governing the movement of the earths material, through the comprehensive study of deep exploration of the earth, high-temperature, and high-pressure experiments, and rock geochemistry. Thirdly, we should study the interaction of the circles to understand the temporal and spatial evolution of the livable earth, which is the core of the earth system science. We must focus on the study of ocean-land-atmosphere interaction, water-soil-gas interaction, human-ground coupling, and their mutual effects. Fourthly, we should integrate the dynamic process of the circle by simulating and predicting future changes in the Earth.

In this lecture, Professor Hai Cheng mainly talked about the achievements of recent years in the high/low latitude driving problem of climate change. Based on the high-precision 14C and 230Th age correspondence of the Hulu cave stalagmites, this study established the sub-orbital scale climate change records in the low latitude area and reliably revealed the teleconnection between the sub-orbital scale high and low latitude climate changes.

In another report, Professor Shouye Yang mainly explained the application of geochemical tracer in the process of sedimentary source and sink of the East China Sea, and clarified the reasons for selecting the edge of the East Asian continent, describing two unique river systems in East Asia and the geochemical constraints on river sediment transport systems in the Late Quaternary.

Professor Shuji Gao has been engaged in the research of marine nitrogen cycle for a long time. In his report, he mainly introduced the achievements in nitrogen cycle research and described the impact of atmospheric nitrogen deposition and river nitrogen input on marine ecosystems. Prof. Gao also comprehensively analyzed nitrogen in different habitats including cycle process rate and flux. A series of sensitive nitrogen isotope determination methods had been established in his laboratory.

2. Conferences 2.1 Goldschmidt Conference In August 2019, three student members (Yue Hu, Tingting Chen, and Jianlin Liao) of the SYSU-SEG student chapter attended the Goldschmidt Conference in Barcelona, Spain. Yue Hu presented her research, Evidence of Intense Climate Variation and

Reduced ENSO Activity from Tridacna δ¹⁸O 3700 Years ago, in the conference in the

form of poster. In the same way, Tingting Chen showed her study about the Formation of Carbonate Minerals at Early Stage of Sulfate-driven Anaerobic Oxidation of Mathane. Jianlin Liao shared his research in the forms of oral report and poster, which entitled by Nano-Mineralogy and Geochemistry of Bioapatite in REE-Rich Deep-Sea Sediments: LA-ICP-MS and TEM Studies.

2.2 SEG Conference Two SYSU SEG students attended the SEG meeting at Santiago in October. These two posters were warmly welcomed by teachers and students, offering a good communication channel and broaden student’s international perspectives.

3. Main field trip (Field Geological Survey of Beiya Large-scale Gold Deposit and

Comparative Study of Neighboring Areas, western Yunan Province, southwest China) Our main field trip had been organized at July 28th to August 3rd, 2019. We had been to Beiya gold deposits on purpose of sample collection. Researcher Dengfeng Li and Associate Professor Fu Yu were our instructors. All the travel costs were co-sponsored by SEG fund and National Nature Science Foundation of China (41080268) of Prof. Xiaoming Sun.

4. Small field trip In September 2019, Prof. Xiaoming Sun who is the academic sponsor of the SYSU-SEG student chapter led a field trip to the titanomagnetite deposits in Panzhihua City, Sichuan Province. One student member, Jianlin Liao, participated in this field trip. The Panzhihua titanomagnetite deposit is located on the southwestern edge of Sichuan Province. The proved reserves of vanadium-titanium magnetite amount to nearly 10 billion tons, of which vanadium and titanium reserves account for 87% and 94.3% of the countrys proven reserves, ranking third and first in the world respectively. It is called the City of Vanadium and Titanium. Prof. Xiaoming Sun provided the financial support.
