When going into a workplace make sure you.........

Dress for success!Get your facts straightWhen you meet with your employer to fill out your Ministerial Order form, one of the

questions you should ask about is the workplace dress code. Make a note of

what they say and have a look at what the other employees are wearing.

Limit visible piercing & skin artNumerous earrings, tattoos or body

piercing make an individual statement but you need to remove or cover them if you

are serious about impressing you employer.

Moderate makeupLight makeup and a natural look for

females will work best for most employers.

It’s probably best for guys to avoid makeup altogether.

Lose the blingDon’t go overboard with jewellery. Not only

does it look bad, it can be a hazard in some workplaces. Remove all but one ring,

one set earrings (studs are best) & one neck chain.‘Accessorize in moderation’

Harness your hairIf you have long hair keep it tied back. If

you have short hair make sure it’s been cut recently. Remember to save extreme hair

styles and colours for the weekend.

Sensible footwearDitch the thongs!

Clean, polished, closed-toe shoes will keep most employers happy. Remember to protect your feet ana always consider

OH&S in the workplace you are going to.

Shopping on a shoe-stringYou may need to expand your work wardrobe. Op-shops, discount stores and markets offer outfits at bargin prices - or a friend or family

member may be able to loan you a few items. Lack of finances won’t stop you from making a

good impression.

Shower & deodorant freshPlacement day is shower day! If you are male - shave! Aim for a clean and tidy appearance - neat and clean ironed

clothes, tidy hair and clean, cut finger nails. Deodorant is in and excessive aftershave

or perfume is out.

Get a second opinionAsk a trusted adult for their opinion on your

appearance. They will likely be closer in age to the employer. You might not agree, but their opinion should help you impress

your employer.

Be prepared and positiveBe early on your first day. Organise and iron your clothes a couple of days before

your placement starts .

Ask questions and listen to any feedback on your appearance that your employer

may give you.

Cover and concealRegardless of fashion, clothes like shorts,

short skirts, bare midriff or revealing cleavage are likely to make employers and customers feel uncomfortable. Guys, if you want to impress, wear your pants on your

waist and your collars down.

Ditch the denimEven if they cost you (or your parents!) A

lot of money, those cargos that denim jacket, skirt or jeans send the wrong

message. An employer may decide that you look too casual and don’t care

enopugh about placement.

your work placementWhat to do after

Hi GuysYour employer has taken the time to share with you their skills and experience. Most importantly they have given you the opportunity to build on and expand your skills and knowledge about the industry. They have also given you an insight into the world of work.It is important to thank your employer for their hospitality. When an employer has a positive work placement experience they are more likely to welcome other students into their workplace.
