US in Schools – Mentoring is a programme funded by the University of Sheffield that places our students in local schools and colleges to work with a targeted group of young learners.

The programme is designed to provide direct support for young people from backgrounds that are currently under-represented in Higher Education to achieve the best results. The programme places specially trained and current university students in schools or colleges for weekly 2-4 hour sessions throughout the academic year. There is also the opportunity for an optional block placement at the end of the summer term.

E-MENTORINGIn addition to one-to-one mentoring, we also offer e-mentoring to young people participating in the programme. E-mentoring enables mentors and mentees to communicate outside of their in-school/college sessions, in a secure and interactive environment. Messages are filtered and moderated, to ensure the safety of those using the site. In addition to the messaging facility that the site employs, there are also a number of learning tasks that young people can undertake, and a vast array of resources, ranging from revision skills right through to choosing the right career.

THE ROLE• This is a paid opportunity• Your commitment would be for 4

hours per week for between 15-20 weeks during term-time, across both semesters

• You will be working in a local school or college as a role model and mentor for 4-6 young people

• You will be an Ambassador for the University

• The role will contribute to your HEAR, and can be counted towards awards such as the Sheffield Graduate Award and the Skills for Work certificate

Amazing experience for working in schools and getting to know the school system and teachers. Really encouraged for working as a teacher

Helped my mentees dispel some of the myths about higher education and discussed varying revision techniques to assist mentees in their revision for GCSE’s and beyond.

THE MAIN AIMS OF THE SCHEME ARE:

To provide positive role models for local young people

To increase the attainment of participating young people

To raise self-esteem and motivation of the young people

To raise awareness of Higher Education amongst under-represented groups of young people

To provide University of Sheffield students with the opportunity to gain in-school/college experience

To provide University of Sheffield students with the chance to evidence transferable skills

ONE-TO-ONE MENTORINGStudent mentors interact with young people on a one-to-one basis outside of their usual classroom environment. One-to-one mentors help their mentees in a variety of ways. This can include, but is not limited to:

• Helping with young people to improve study skills

• Supporting completion of coursework / exam preparation / homework

• Proof reading written work and giving constructive advice

• Signposting useful learning resources• Helping young people to consider

and research their future options / education / career direction

• Giving young people the opportunity to learn more about Higher Education

I have really enjoyed the program

it has enabled me to adapt to

talking with young people in a

semi-professional environment.

Also working with schools and

teachers has also been a really

good experience.
