We have had a fantastic start to Kindergarten in KP! We have already learnt so much! This term in English we are learning about friendship and how to be a good friend. We have already done some great Rainbow Fish artwork to show us how sharing makes us happy! Home Readers: A quick reminder that students can bring in their home readers on their news day to swap it over. Don’t forget to sign your child’s Reader’s Club card and send it in when all 25 boxes have been signed. Sport: Kindergarten has sport on both Tuesday and Friday this term so on those days students can wear their yellow sport top and runners. Library: Our library day is Tuesday this term. Students are doing a great job remembering to bring in their library bag and book.

LEARNING SUPPORT

In 2019, our Hanwood Public School Learning Support Team(LST) consists of Mrs Mackerras, Mrs Violi, Mrs Baird, Mrs Vaessen, Miss McGreal, Mrs Pilkington and Mr Workman. The role of learning and support teachers centres around working with classroom teachers to support students with additional educational needs. It includes providing direct support for students with specific targeted needs. Learning and support teachers usually work within classrooms with small groups of children with similar educational needs. This allows the LST teacher to provide targeted support. If your child is receiving additional support from the learning and support teachers, you would have received a note home regarding this. Kindergarten parents of students receiving learning support will receive a note in the coming weeks. If you have any questions regarding the Learning and Support Team at Hanwood Public School, please contact me via the front office. Gary Workman Assistant Principal

3/4S - MRS MCALLISTER

3/4S has had a very busy start to 2019. We have established classroom routines, played “Ice Breaker” games to get to know each other and painted all our book covers.

Science this term is all about soil, maps and erosion; yesterday we conducted our first experiment in small groups (with a Manager, a Speaker and a Director). We are also working towards a surprise for the end of the year!

In History we are learning about the brave explorers who travelled the globe to discover unknown lands.

Dragons are taking over our classroom in English, with our novel “How to Train a Dragon” and through our art work.

Our PD/Health sessions are on Thursdays; these will consist of work in the classroom and some short games.

We played a great game with 3/4Y, where we had to close our eyes and turn a circle into a square, while holding a long rope. After a few practices we became quite good at it because we started trusting each other.

We have decorated koala biscuits and then eaten them, of course!

Our Spelling program is following the Sound Waves program– this week’s phoneme (sound) is “a” for apple.

Maths has been all about Whole Number and Place Value. We have been learning about this through games and written work, even drawing on the carpet with chalk!!!

Sport is on Fridays, so everyone needs to remember to bring their hats, drink bottles and sunscreen. REMINDER: Please bring in a small container (maybe a Chinese takeaway container) to use as a time capsule– part of our Science and also our PBL unit.

THOUGHTS ON SCHOOL UNIFORM

At Tuesday night’s P&C meeting, the committee discussed some ideas for a possible modification to the current school uniform. At this point in time there is no definite decision. The P&C are seeking your thoughts and feelings on this as a possibility for the future. If you are against this suggestion, or in fact think it is a great idea, please approach any of the P&C executive or email Rebecca Watt, the P&C President with your suggestions, thoughts or ideas. Rebecca’s email: [email protected]

Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews 2019

We are about to embark on our Term 1 interviews for 2019. These meetings will allow parents and students to meet with their classroom teacher and discuss individual needs early in the year. Meetings will be held in Week 5 of this term (February 25th-March 1st). It is important that ALL parents make an appointment as teachers will be using this information to best cater to the learning, social and emotional needs of your child. It is important that your child is a part of the conversation regarding his/her learning goals for 2019. Please return the slip below to the school office to book your time and date with the classroom teacher. This will be a first in best dressed basis. The Return Slip will be given to the eldest child in your family so please check his/her bag. If the dates provided by the teachers are not appropriate for you please contact the teacher directly with a possible alternate day and time. We look forward to meeting with you.
