GROUND SEARCH TEAM LEADER

Team Briefing Assignment

SAR Management Briefing

The SAR Manager hands you the attached Team Assignment Sheet and map, then provides the following verbal briefing:

Situation

Pat Bailey, aged 18, (but with a mental age of 6) has gone missing from a field trip with her class at a nearby a Provincial Campground on the northwest shore of the lake. She is not familiar with the area and has no outdoors experience. She wandered from a picnic area where the class was having brunch at approximately 10:00 a.m. A friend has told us that Pat said she was going to feed some squirrels that were by their picnic site. The class instructor and teachers aide did a quick search of the area but found no trace of Pat.

We received the call at 11:45 a.m. and it is now 1:25 p.m. It is July 14 and while temperatures are normal (19 degrees centigrade) a storm is expected soon with significantly lower temperatures.

Pat was last seen wearing blue jeans, a pink T-Shirt which has a picture of "Barney" on it (a purple dinosaur). She is wearing running shoes of an unknown type. She may have an orange and a sandwich with her.

The area is a Provincial campground with considerable wild areas (mostly second growth forest) containing steep ravines and gulleys and one lake. It has several trails that other teams are searching. This area is shown on the 12 year old map as almost completely wooded. We will use 20 deg declination on map sheet 93H13. Mission

Your task is to grid search area C (you are shown this on a map which is given to you). It is rectangular in shape and measures approximately 1 km by .8 km. Execution

You must complete this task before last light at 9:45 p.m. However, a Dog Team is searching the area between here and your search area and will not be clear for 3 hours. Your Team cannot depart for your search area until they are finished. Your team is as listed on the Team Assignment Form. Administration/ Logistics

There is no transportation so your team will have to walk the 1.5 km from our base camp to the search area. Supplies are at the Incident Command Post. Food and water is at the restaurant back on the highway. A base camp has been set up at the park headquarters approximately 2km north of the ICP. There is no family -- only the teachers and friends. There is no media on site that we are aware of. Use the find codes that are relevant to your SAR group. Communication/ Command

You will be given a radio and your call sign is "Team 4". We will be on 149.495. The Search Manager is Ted Baxter. Use the find codes on the radio. Check in times will be 15 minutes after the hour. I have a T.V. interview now so if you have any questions or requests put them in writing and give them to the SAR Management Team. Get your orders ready and Good Luck.
