The Holden Arboretum offers exciting, hands-on education programs dedicated to a broader understanding of plants

and nature. Our 3,600-acre campus serves as an outdoor classroom, with access to horticultural collections, a new educational greenhouse, forests, fields, ravines, streams, ponds and trails. Classes offered to schools and groups incorporate STEM, Common Core and Problem Based Learning with a special emphasis on cultivating an appreciation for the natural world.

Plants and Me InvestigationGrades Pre K -1 Plants surround us in our daily life. The clothes we wear, the food we eat and even the chairs we sit in come from plants. Explore the diversity of plants in our lives. This investigation takes place outside in fall, spring or summer. (April-Oct)

Plant explorationGrades Pre K-1Use your senses to observe plants and plant parts, sorting and describing them. Students will also plant a seed to observe its growth.

In a small, small PondGrades Pre K-1Learn about the water cycle and how important water is in daily life. After listening to the story In the Small, Small Pond by Denise Fleming, explore the pond in the Hershey Children’s Garden. This investigation takes place outside in fall, spring or summer. (April–Oct)

Poetry and Plants Grades 1-2Through reading and writing poetry, observing plants and trees, students will learn where plants acquire the material needed for growth.

Plants and airGrades 2-3We are surrounded by air – but did you know how important it is for plants to help keep our air clean? Find out the role that plants play in removing pollutants using their roots, stems and leaves!

soil not Dirt Grade 3Why is soil so important? What makes it different from dirt? Get ready to get dirty and find out what soil is made from.

Plant PartsGrades 3-4Plants need air, water, sunlight and nutrients to live and grow and have special structures to help them do that. We’ll discuss these structures and locate them in the spiny desert and cloud forest. Each student will also construct his or her own terrarium to take back to school to observe. (Please provide one 16 or 20 oz. plastic bottle for each student.)

adaptationsGrades 4-5Plants, animals and environments can change over time. Find out how the plants and animals of the spiny desert and cloud forest have adapted to live in these extreme conditions.

Food Chains and Food WebsGrade 5 We will explore how organisms interact and ultimately obtain energy from the sun. Students will observe the plants and animals of the spiny desert and the cloud forest and find out how they all rely on each other for energy.

soil studyGrade 6Explore soil and rocks to discover their formation and properties. We will learn the properties of soil and discover why life depends on taking care of this valuable resource.

Plant Cells Grade 6Plants are made of cells. Investigate the organelles of a plant cell as you build a model of a cell.

PopulationsGrades 7-8 Many factors affect the ability of wildlife to survive over time. Weather conditions, disease, predators, pollution and habitat destruction are some examples. Habitat is the key to wildlife survival and population size. Students learn that organism numbers will be governed by the availability of habitat elements.

symbiotic relationshipsGrades 7-8Plants and animals interact with one another through symbiotic relationships, and some organisms have become so adapted to each other that neither could survive without the other. Students explore two vastly different biomes, unearthing some of the examples of mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism.

Plant Pollination and reproduction Grades 7-8Reproduction is necessary for a species to survive. Find out the many ways plants have adapted for pollination to take place.

Plant evolution Grades 9th-CollegeStudents learn about a spiny desert and a cloud forest, focusing on the flora found in each. Based on leaf color, leaf size, flower color and shape, students evaluate the effects of water, light and soil on the plant life in these two biomes.

Citizen scienceGrades 9th-CollegeEveryday, all around the world people are contributing to large scale science research projects about everything from birds and bugs, to plants and waterways. With no need for extensive training or complicated tools, anyone can become citizen scientist. Learn how scientist are using data collected by everyday people to help solve mysteries, create laws protecting the environment, and discover new information. Then move outside to use a tool most of us have in our pockets, a smart phone, to collect data and contribute to a few different citizen science projects using mobile phone applications. STUDENTS WILL USE THEIR OWN DEVICES. DATA CHARGES MAY APPLY.

BiomimicryGrades 9th-CollegeBiomimicry is a new area of science that studies nature’s best ideas and then imitates these designs and processes to solve human problems. Studying a leaf to invent a better solar cell is an example. “Innovation inspired by nature.”

Workshops for the establishment, maintenance and curricular application of a school garden

Cleveland Botanical Garden offers a series of workshops designed to make the addition of a school garden to your community both enjoyable and educational. Workshops can be taken as a series or taken individually, depending on the particular needs of your school or schools. Each workshop can – and should – involve a wide cross-section of your school community, from administration to faculty to staff to parents.

The 2-hour workshops are taught by the Garden’s experienced and creative staff of educators and horticulturists to ensure your garden gets off to the right start and continues to flourish. Contact us for pricing and scheduling at 216.721.1600

Laying the GroundworkThis session provides an overview of a school gardening program. Participants learn the elements of a school gardening program, who should be involved and how they will benefit, and how The Garden can help in its establishment. Ways of generating interest and ideas from the entire school community are addressed using a creative, open-inquiry process. Forming the school garden team as central to the program is covered. Guidance in imagining a vision and mission is provided.

Linking Literature Recent trends in education have focused on an integrated curriculum. Children learn best when subject matter is meaningful and useful, and literature brings meaning to science. The Garden recognizes the need for teacher professional development in this area. This course offers training on how to implement linking Plant Science and Early Literacy. We will share our model for effective inquiry-based, age-appropriate lessons for teachers to replicate in the classroom.

“Dig In” to Plant science and LiteracyThis session provides participants the opportunity to analyze soil structure, perform a percolation study and play with worms. Teachers will participate in soil based inquiry lessons filled with literacy techniques that can be implemented in classroom lessons.

Pre service teachersLearn all the Garden has to offer educators through a pre-service teacher workshop. This program is tailor made to fit the needs of college professors teaching education students before they are student teachingW

Incorporating the School Garden into CurriculumThe foundation of any school garden program is the curricular opportunities inherent to it. This session focuses on ways to connect the garden to the existing school curriculum and the Ohio Academic Content Standards for grades K-12. All subjects can be taught using a school garden which will be demonstrated in this session.

How Will YOUR Garden Grow?: Preliminary PlanningThe placement and design of a school garden are important to its successful function in the life of a school and as a teaching tool. Participants learn preliminary steps in garden design, including on-site analysis and mapping. Various design possibilities are presented. Student involvement tied to curricular objectives is stressed.

How Will YOUR Garden Grow?: Final Design and BudgetingParticipants learn how to create a final garden design incorporating a plant list and a features list. Based on the final design, a comprehensive budget is generated along with suggested resources.

Installation 101Based on their garden design, participants learn correct planting techniques, and to install hardscape elements and other large features, such as seating and garden beds. Safety issues are addressed as are the tools needed for these steps.

Planting Day!Time to take all of your knowledge, put it to use, and get dirty in the process! Participants learn how to involve the entire school community in planting and celebrating their garden. Celebration activities are discussed, along with responsibilities and scheduling.

Gardening 101Demonstrations on how to garden are provided, based on a particular team’s level of collective expertise. General plant care, plant requirements and some basic botany are presented, including water needs, soil structure and infrastructure needs.

School Garden Maintenance and TroubleshootingThis session addresses issues of ongoing maintenance once the garden is planted to ensure ongoing success. It outlines how to integrate the school garden program into the life of the school community. Maintenance and expansion of the physical garden space, as well as the format of the team, their community connections and curricular connections are all covered.

ProGraM reGIstratIon InForMatIon Deposit• Checks, credit cards or purchase orders

must be submitted prior to programs.

• Your deposit is due 2 weeks prior to visit date and is deducted from the total cost of your visit.

• Failure to pay deposit 2 weeks prior to your visit date will result in the cancellation of your visit.

• Deposits are non-refundable, but they are transferable should you need to reschedule your visit.

• Groups canceling OR rescheduling less than 24 hours prior to their visit lose their deposit.

Chaperones• Grades PreK-3: One chaperone is

required for every 5 students

• Grades 4-8: One chaperone is required for every 8 students

• Grades 9-12: One chaperone is required for every 10 students

Required chaperones are admitted free. Additional adults are charged a reduced $7.50 admission fee.

• Adult Chaperones and leaders must remain with groups at all times.

• CBG reserves the right to ask groups not adequately chaperoned to leave, and/or charge inadequately chaperoned groups a $25 fee.

Buses• The maximum vehicle height allowable in

our parking garage is 7 feet, 2 inches.

• Vehicles are not permitted to park directly in front of the building: this is a fire lane. Nor are buses/large vans permitted in our parking garage. Instead, large buses/vans should pull forward through our turn-around, up to and even with the small glass structure on the right, not blocking our parking garage ramp. Cleveland Botanical Garden staff may also be present to show you where to park.

• Bus drivers are welcome to enter our facility while students are visiting.

• Anyone parking in our garage is responsible for payment.

Lunch• In good weather, groups are to picnic on

Wade Oval, outside the Garden grounds.

• Groups are not permitted to picnic on Garden grounds unless they have all purchased food from our Café.

• In case of inclement weather, we have reserved a room indoors for your lunch which you are responsible for cleaning before you leave. We cannot provide refrigeration for school lunches, but can provide you with ice if requested.

Late Arrivals/Cancellations/ No Shows• Please call if your visit is delayed, as staff

will be meeting your group upon arrival.

• Arriving late shortens your scheduled time in the Glasshouse or Hershey Children’s Garden, or both. These areas have limited capacities and groups are tightly scheduled. Note that only one group of 25 students is permitted in the Hershey Children’s Garden at one time. We have reserved a 30-minute time slot for each group of 25 students you have. If you arrive late, your Hershey Children’s Garden visit will be shortened, rescheduled later in the day or canceled.

• Failure to arrive on your scheduled visit date will result in a charge of the total admission rate for your group.

• If you need to reschedule your visit, please do so as soon as possible.

• Cancellations / Delays call 216.721.1600, ext. 100.

Please review these guidelines with your students before coming to the Garden:

• School visitors are expected to be respectful of all other guests at the Garden.

• All visitors are expected to behave in ways that keep people, plants, animals and facilities safe. Running, jumping, climbing, etc., are not safe, and Garden staff will interrupt such behavior.

• Leave toys and radios on the bus as they are not allowed in the Glasshouse.

To register for any of the BotaniCool Programs listed in this brochure, please have the following information available:

• Your name

• Your school name, address and phone

• The name of the program(s) you have selected

• Number of programs

• 1st and 2nd choice of dates

• # of participants and # of chaperones

• Method of transportation

• Method of payment

• Lunch plans
